Let's face it, Credit Card Settlement is not brain surgery. The time has never been better for consumers to consider doing their own credit card settlement.. But how do you know if credit card settlement is right for you and whether or not you should do it yourself?
Debt settlement is not the only way of dealing with your credit card debt. There are other solutions.
Let's take a look at the key indicators in deciding whether you should do credit card settlement.
One, can you make minimum payments on your credit cards without it leading to financial hardship? In other words, will making the required minimum payments put you and your family's welfare at risk? Will you be able to key a roof over your head, put food on your table, pay utilities, keep you on the road so you can work, and provide a reasonable lifestyle? If yes, then you may want to consider making your payments as agreed to get you back on track, but first read number two.
Two, Are your credit cards already in default or with a collection agency or attorney? If so, then making monthly payments does not make much sense. So even if your situation can now justify the amounts that were required of you, your current status probably still makes credit card settlement the best choice.
Three, can you set aside a reasonable amount of money each money to go toward your credit card settlement? For credit card settlement to work, you need to allocate money toward the process. We usually suggest a minimum of 2 percent of the credit card debt. So if you have $20,000 of credit card debt, a reasonable amount to put aside each month would be at least $400.
Credit card settlement is not complicated but it is timely. Getting yourself in position to settle your debt and knowing when to pull the trigger can be the difference between success and less than desired results. If done right, you can achieve settlements as low as 20 percent of the full amount owed, though more usual results are 40 to 50 percent. And it can be done without stress and aggravation. As a matter of fact, in a short time, we can show you how to make the phone calls from debt collectors stop entirely.
So, is it worth it to do credit card settlement yourself?
You decide. A typical debt settlement company will charge 15 percent of the total debt amount and collect most of it up-front. Some even tack on a monthly service charge.
So, if you have $30,000 in credit card debt, the company will charge you $4500.00 and offer no guarantees. Adding insult to injury, because most of the credit card settlement fee is due up-front, you will spend as long as a year just paying down the fee.
In recent years, fees charged by debt settlement companies have gotten out of hand. And worse, the results a debt settlement company achieves are not as good as years ago. That is why we are offering alternative solutions. As a matter of fact, many credit card companies are cutting debt settlement companies out of the process entirely. Some even skip the collection process and send it right to legal once they find out a debt settlement company is involved.
This is not something you should live with. And there is another issue to take into consideration. By using a debt settlement company you are trusting someone else to manage your money. Companies go out of business every day and that is particularly true in the prickly debt settlement industry. Do you really want to leave it to chance that your money will be safe?
The only safe way is to do it yourself but you should be armed with as much information as possible. To find out all the ins and out associated with the credit card settlement strategy, go to Credit Card Settlement for our FREE book "Debt Negotiation Blueprint".
