Building Credit the Positive Way!

This lens is all about building good credit. Here are articles that I think are practical and helpful for anyone who wants to build a solid credit history. Whether you're a student, a mom, a family man, a bachelor or a career woman, there's an article here for you!

Help! I have no credit history!

People with no credit history find it harder to deal with a society that uses credit history to measure one's credibility and credit worthiness. Banks, financial institutions, landlords, employers - they all look into an individual's credit report when considering an application.

Yes, even landlords and employers check on your credit history before accepting you as a tenant or as an employee. Even if you're not thinking about getting a loan, without a credit history, it can bring about some problems with your finding a job or a place to live.

But what if you have no credit? Does that put you in a hopeless situation? Is it possible for you to build credit? The answer is yes!

Let's talk about the ways on how you can establish your credit history today.

A Look At Your Credit Score

Being in a bad credit situation shouldn't be a hopeless case for everyone. There is always a way to repair bad credit especially if you try to do something about it right away.

As soon as you recognize signs of bad credit- delays in payment, creditors notifying you about your bills, cash shortages- decide to bring control back to the situation. Here are the ways you can work for a better credit report and score:

Get your credit report. To work out an efficient plan to your creditors, you should personally obtain a copy of your credit report from any one of the major credit bureaus (Experian, Equifax, TransUnion). Study your credit report carefully and look for any inaccuracy or false charges.

If there are mistakes, contact your creditors and the bureau who issued your report immediately. If there are none, then take a look at the exact amount of debts you owe to each of your creditors and start working on your repayment plan.

It takes a lot of discipline to use a credit card properly (i.e. pay it off every single month and never pay interest) but if you can do that as a young person (with parental guidance) along with having a savings account, it's an easy way to establish credit. Of course if you save your money and use cash to make major purchases, you won't need credit! (Yes, it's possible!) Good lens!

Should I Get A Student Credit Card?

Applying for a student credit card while still in high school or college is one way to start building a credit history. The difference of student credit cards from regular credit cards is that they are created especially for students who have not yet established a credit on their own.

This is why some credit card companies require a co-signer on behalf of the student applying for a credit card. This will be the only chance a person with no credit history can apply for an unsecured credit card without much hassle. Once graduated, a person without a credit history or with bad credit will have to apply for a secured credit card.
