What are cribbage boards?

Cribbage is one of the oldest card games still played today. Described by some as 'a game of low, animal cunning', it demands skill, experience, craftiness and luck to win. The rules of cribbage are simple, and the element of chance in the fall of the cards is such that even a novice can beat a seasoned player over one or two games, yet over a longer period expert play will win out.

Cribbage boards are usually made of wood, with a series of holes to record each player's score. Boards like these have been in use for more than five hundred years, pre-dating cribbage itself, and over the centuries an enormous variety of boards have been made and used throughout the world.

Modern manufacturers produce cribbage boards from materials such as steel and aircraft aluminium, while traditional craftsmen still hand-carve boards from exotic hardwoods, and other natural materials such as bone and ivory.

The history of cribbage boards

Cribbage boards date back to at least the 1630s, when cribbage in its modern form was first popularised. Similar boards had been used long beforehand for scoring various games. The ancient Egyptians played a game called Dogs and Jackals (or the Game of Fifty-Eight Holes) was being played. Although the exact rules have been lost, we have some examples of the scoring board which was carved from ivory or bone, and contained 58 holes grouped in sets of five. Cribbage boards from the seventeenth century to the present day use the same grouping.
