It Could Have Happened To Anyone
Tragedy At The Holocaust Museum
We all teach our children the difference between good strangers and bad strangers. If it is a bad one they are taught that they should not go up to them and that they should locate the nearest adult that they trust. But what happens when we as adults forget ourselves, how to decide who is a good stranger and who is a bad one?
Recently at the Holocaust Museum, in Washington DC Special Officer Stephen Tyrone Johns was gunned down by a man that no one would have suspected to be a bad stranger. Special Officer Stephen Tyrone Johns opened the door for James V. Brunn, an 88 year old man. More than likely Officer Johns assumed that this person was just an elderly visitor to the Holocaust Museum that may have needed a little assistance getting in the door. However, the scene quickly changed as James V. Brunn pulled out a rifle and shot an innocent man that was only trying to help him. How quickly we as adults forget that not all people are good. But who would have suspected an 88 year old man?
James V. Brunn, lived next door to someone. He stood in line at the grocery store with everyday people. He sat next to someone at a stoplight that day. But no one called the police and reported suspicious activity from this elderly gentleman. Why? Because none of the people that he interacted with had anyway of knowing the horrible act this man was about to commit. He didn't look like a bad person. Or did he? What does a bad person look like? Just like you and me. This horrible person could have been your neighbor!
Unfortunately, we just don't know about the majority of people around us. And keeping our families safe is becoming more and more difficult.
Statistics show that this year alone, there has been a huge increase in activity from hate groups. Online activity such as website visits and blogs show that these types of people are beginning to stir a little more now. Experts believe that things like wider acceptance of gay marriage and having an African American President is some of the reasoning behind this increase. James V. Brunn, it turns out was a self proclaimed White Supremacist. Evidence was found that would lead us to believe that he did not appreciate Jewish people or African Americans.
Are you at risk of becoming the next victim of a hate crime? If you are reading this and breathing at the same time then the answer is yes. Anyone of us could be disliked by a group of individuals that want to do harm to us. So knowing as much about your neighbors as possible is crucial in your quest for safety.
The tragic event at the Holocaust Museum, in Washington D.C. has left an 11 year old boy without a father. This young man will never again know the feeling of a hug from his father or see the look of admiration from his dad when he graduates from High School. His life has been changed forever. Could anything have been done to prevent this tragedy? Unfortunately the answer is, probably not. But you can prevent a similar event from happening within your family. Find out all that you can about the family across the street, or about the man in the blue house on the corner. You aren't being nosy. You're just preventing years of heartache and despair for your family.
