The Wartsila Scandal: A New Perspective

The Wartsila bribery case is one of the most deplorable criminal cases in the history of the engineering industry. The case is about Wartsila Ltd. a Finnish engine manufacturer that offered bribes to an official of a European Marine company for securing certain orders.

Swedish legal experts believe that Wartsila did in fact offer a huge amount to a leading official in orders to earn profits. The fact of the matter is that Wartsila secured these orders through cheap tactics. Wartsila however asserted that the payments were only for marketing and consultancy and that it had no bad intent behind the deal.

You must be thinking how the whole affair started; well it all began when Wartsila supplied a total of eight main engines and six auxiliary engines to Swedish shipping company Rederi AB at a cost of EUR 25-30 million. The Finnish firm also signed two brokerage agreements with Euro Marine Ltd.

Euro Marine Ltd. was represented and to some extent owned by Bo Petterson the chief suspect in the scandal. It is believed that Wartsila transferred EUR 1.1 million in two installments in the years 2000-2001 directly into Petterson's Swiss account in order to bribe Petterson. To make matters worse Petterson was found dead in his cell just on the eve of the verdict of the corruption case which further aggravated Wartsila's problems.

The whole affair clearly shows Wartsila's cruel intentions and even if the Finnish engine manufacturer is able to escape the wrath of justice it is quite clear that the engine manufacturer has brought a bad name to the Finnish engine manufacturing sector.
