Broken Doll by Crissa Constantine
Lisa, a new teacher in a tough school, is struggling hard to get by, dodging troubles at home. Sunny is just like her name: the most beautiful, kind hearted, generous, cheerful teacher in the school, if not the entire country. To Lisa's delight, she and Sunny soon become close friends. But Sunny isn't the perfect friend after all. Lisa soon discovers that, despite her genuinely friendly nature, Sunny is a train wreck waiting to happen. While she may be kind to some, she thinks nothing of manipulating anyone she wishes, sleeping with her husband's best friend and taking huge risks with her personal life. When Lisa tries to rescue her troubled friend from herself and her suspicious past, she discovers that some people - even dear friends - may simply be doomed from the start.Buy This Book

Reviews for Broken Doll
"...I had a few spare minutes and read a couple pages out of the middle. It sounded pretty engrossing. The next day I had a few spare minutes and started reading from the beginning. I had to force myself to put it down after I totally lost track of time... I could not put it down, next thing I knew it was 3 A.M. and I'd finished. What an ending! What a story!"
- Elsa Peterson Obuchowski, former editor at McGraw-Hill in New York
"A good story and attractive to a very wide audience."
- Basil Jackson, well known author of 10 published novels, including the widely praised "Flameout" and "The Night Manhattan Burned".
"the author is continuing to successfully mine the vein of personal passions, focusing on the brevity and caprices of life...confirming that life demands living vivace and con brio."
- Tonu Naelapea, editor of the English section of the weekly paper "Estonian Life", Toronto.
"Broken Doll is full of heart!" - Alli Vail, Reporter, Parksville Qualicum Beach News
"Broken Doll is page-turner, a testament to friendship and to the joy of living out loud for as long as we can." - Vivien Sears, C.R.E.S. Re/Max Hall of Fame
"This story is so engrossing I couldn't put it down! It speaks to the broken doll in every soul." - Gail Smith, B.Ed., M.Ed., Retired university instructor and librarian
"You won't forget this book!" - Alvin Brown, former RCMP officer
"Broken Doll is full of insight about human nature. Amazing!" - Ray Haynes, entrepreneur and professional musician
"This is a very fascinating book. My niece and friends in Japan will love it. I can hardly wait to hear their comments." - Masako Ayotte
"This is a story that had to be told." - Rev. Foster Freed, minister at Knox United Church, Parksville. Rev. Freed grew up in Manhattan and has a degree in dramatic literature.
"I really enjoyed reading it. I read the book so fast one night I was up until 1:30 A.M. because I couldn't put it down." - Keiko Kaltenbach, entrepreneur, Qualicum Beach
"An amazing--and deeply sad--story skillfully written. A beautiful, rich novel."
- Katerina Dorovini-Zis, M.D., professor of medicine at UBC
"Very interesting! I couldn't put it down."
- Chris Kinne, retired teacher, San Bernardino City Unified School District
"A fascinating and enjoyable read."
- James Marinis, former principal and board member, San Bernardino City Unified School District
"I really enjoyed the different locals and the concerns of the women, as teachers and of women out and about. I liked the way that Sunny took care of her friend in a superficial way, helping with clothes. It kind of said it all, in terms of where Sunny's head was!" - Vicki Matthew
"The line between a tragic story and a heroic one is thin...Constantine writes with great sensitivity towards the characters, who each in their own way are fragile and broken...However, as much as the story is testament to the triumph of friendship and living out loud, it is also a tragedy of a life cut short." - Alli Vail, Reporter, The News, Parksville/Qualicum Beach

Reader Feedback
The book entertained me from start to finish. The characters in the book seem so real because many of us face challenges in our careers and through our friendships. I haven't read too many books outside of ones for work and my Master's degree; however, this book was so pleasurable I had to sneak it in bed with me...even though my fiance wanted me to turn off the bedroom light. It's been over a decade that I've found a book I've enjoyed so much!

Constantine has an energetic and engaging writing style, that captures the readers interest at the outset of the story; this was a book I could not put down. Ms. Constantine's hilarious accounts of a teacher's life in the "blackboard jungle" of the USA public school system wrang true, in an otherwise touching story of an intense, and complex friendship between two seemingly opposite young women. I heartily recommend Broken Doll.

Broken Doll is a book you just can't put down. I think we all have had a friend like Sunny sometime in our life. I felt like I knew her. The realistic struggle of a friendship of two very different people. A great read.

I met Crissa Constantine for the first time Feb. 20, 2008 when she addressed our Bayview Book Club. Her passion and enthusiasm inspired me to pick up both of her books, Banished from the Homeland and Broken Doll after dinner that night. Since we are reading the first book for our book club at a later date I gave it a quick perusal and then started a few pages of Broken Doll. I couldn't put it down! By the time I had finished it was heading for 5:00 AM. I believe there are more Boken Dolls in society than we care to admit or believe. What a memorable and thought-provoking book! Thank you, Crissa.

This narrative tale of a tragedy is well-written and a good read ,not a fictional account. It is fascinating and reveals much about the narrator. I enjoyed the fresh revealing, desriptions of Louisiana and southern California. A short book , but a real page-turner.
