Often though, companies make the mistake of collecting customer data simply because it can be collected without paying too much attention to whether it is even relevant for their needs. They then compound this error by failing to apply the proper data analytics, data visualization and data reporting tools to the collected data.

Botched CRM projects are also often the result of inadequate training and a failure to properly evaluate CRM solutions. As with any technology product, the mileage that companies get from CRM solutions depends largely on how well users are able to take advantage of it. Users who are not properly trained on CRM usage, or are unfamiliar with its full range of capabilities, can quickly wipe out any potential gains that may otherwise have been derived from the technology. Equally important is the care that is taken in evaluating the CRM tool to ensure that it integrates well with existing software products and business processes. An improperly selected product can sometimes result in so many changes, that the project itself fails.

Despite all the hype of the past few years, CRM tools are not a panacea for all of the problems that might be affecting a company. Often, there is a misunderstanding or even a complete lack of understanding, of what CRM tools can actually do. As a result, the expectations associated with CRM technologies are widely out of proportion with the reality. This lack of expectation management sometimes results in disillusionment with CRM projects and often in their demise as well.
