Exceptional Beauty Recognized by UNESCO

Croatia, although rather small country, has it all - plains, mountains, lakes, sea. And very welcoming people, I may add! This is rare country in many ways and here is one of it: You may go hiking early in the morning, refresh yourself in Adriatic see by noon, enjoy delicious traditional recipes accompanied with great music for lunch-break, go rock climbing afternoon (if that's your deal) and enjoy yourself until early morning hours.

Opportunities are endless - for family or adventure vacation - you name it and we have it!

Episcopal Complex of the Euphrasian Basilica in the Historic Centre of Porec

Outstanding example of an early Christian episcopal ensemble that is exceptional by virtue of its completeness and its unique Basilican cathedral.

The group of religious monuments in Porec, where Christianity was established as early as the 4th century, constitutes the most complete surviving complex of its type. The basilica, atrium, baptistery and episcopal palace are outstanding examples of religious architecture, while the basilica itself combines classical and Byzantine elements in an exceptional manner.

It was built on the remains of an earlier tri-naval basilica, in the first half of the 6th century, during the period of Bishop Euphrasius, whose name it bears.
Visitors' tours are possible everyday except during religious rituals. It is possible to climb up to the steeple and view Porec and its surroundings.

About Porec...
Porec tourism is more than sun, sea and perfect tourist image. The summer visitors know how to recognize the city that is still keeping its historical values, which can be seen in the historical city center. You can find museums, galleries in the most valuable city palaces, many of them are the homes for people as they have been centuries ago. Many of our guests probably do not know that they are walking on the streets, built during the Roman times. One part of the city ramparts and towers is still preserved, in the Pentagonal tower there is a restaurant and in the Round tower a pub. Besides Basilica, now it is possible to visit Euphrasius' bishopric, opened in the year 2000 as an architectural monument and the church museum.

Historical Complex of Split with the Palace of Diocletian

The ruins of Diocletian's Palace, built between the late 3rd and the early 4th centuries A.D., can be found throughout the city. The cathedral was built in the Middle Ages, reusing materials from the ancient mausoleum. Twelfth- and 13th-century Romanesque churches, medieval fortifications, 15th-century Gothic palaces and other palaces in Renaissance and Baroque style make up the rest of the protected area.

In November 1979 UNESCO, in line with the international convention on cultural and natural heritage, adopted a proposal that the historic city of Split built around the Palace should be included in the register of World Cultural Heritage.

About Split...
Without hiding their pride, the people of Split will tell you that their city is "the most beautiful one in the world and beyond". You´d better not discuss this with them for well spirited Split will convince you in this as soon as you discover it! This for ever young city with the population of about 200,000 that give it its warm Mediterranean temper, has lived its urban rhythm for as long as 1700 years, with its heart in the Diocletian´s Palace and its soul widespread to embrace you.
The city of Split is situated in the warmest region of the northern Mediterranean coast, in the very centre of the Adriatic eastern coast and in the immediate vicinity of the rivers Jadro and %u017Drnovnica that have been watering it for 1700 years. Its mild climate, with 2700 sunny hours per year, makes it an oasis where, sheltered from the wind, one can enjoy the sun even in wintertime. The industrial, university, and business centre of the region nourishes its "green soul" on the hill Marjan situated in the westernmost part of the peninsula. Its forested park infringed by the city and the sea offers pleasant walks away from the city noise under the pines by the sea.

Plitvice Lakes National Park

The waters flowing over the limestone and chalk have, over thousands of years, deposited travertine barriers, creating natural dams which in turn have created a series of beautiful lakes, caves and waterfalls. These geological processes continue today. The forests in the park are home to bears, wolves and many rare bird species.

The natural attributes of the Plitvice Lakes National Park, uniqueness and sensibiliry of that phenomenon, deserve a full attention of our visitors. Recreational aspect of stay and the amazement with beauty of the area that conquers by its natural diversity and harmony of shapes and colours in any of the seasons, is based on many mutually conditioned natural characteristics.

That is a specific geological and hydrogeological phenomenon of karst. The series of 16 bigger and a few smaller lakes, gradually lined up, separated by travertine barriers for which the period of the last ten thousand years was crucial, and which were ruled by ecological relations similar to those of today - suitable for travertine depositing and for the origin of the lakes - are the basic phenomenon of the National Park.

Travertine forming plants, algae and mosses have been and still are playing an important role in their creation, thus making a very sensitive biodynamic system.

Transitive type of climate between coastal and continental with microclimatic diversities makes summer pleasant and sunny, while on the other side winter is relatively long, harsh and snowrich. There are large forestry complexes in the Park area, of which some sections are protected as a special reserve of forestry vegetation due to its primeval characteristics (Corkova uvala virgin forest). Diversity of places and living conditions makes possible for numerous species of plants and animals in watery and terrestrial areas of the Park to develop with no disturbancy.

Historic City of Trogir

Excellent example of a medieval town...

...built on and conforming with the layout of a Hellenistic and Roman city that has conserved its urban fabric to an exceptional degree and with the minimum of modern interventions, in which the trajectory of social and cultural development is clearly visible in every aspect of the townscape.

Trogir is a remarkable example of urban continuity. The orthogonal street plan of this island settlement dates back to the Hellenistic period and it was embellished by successive rulers with many fine public and domestic buildings and fortifications. Its beautiful Romanesque churches are complemented by the outstanding Renaissance and Baroque buildings from the Venetian period.

About Trogir...
Situated on the small island between the land and the island Ciovo, on the western entrance of the bay where Salona use to lie, Trag' yron, Tragurion, Tragurium is one of the oldest towns of Mediterranean, 4000 years old, and obviously predetermined to be the main town of Roman Illyricum.
Shapes of Trogir are captured in its impressive history. Palaces, public buildings are built in stone from Baradici and each house on the island is a masterpiece. All of them - a dream coming true. The result of this pre-cement area is a town with pavements and church towers made by the hands of sculptors. It seems everything was done in one piece. The town of sculptures.

The Cathedral of St James in Sibenik

Structural characteristics of the Cathedral of St James in %u0160ibenik make it a unique and outstanding

The Cathedral of St James in Sibenik (1431-1535), on the Dalmatian coast, bears witness to the considerable exchanges in the field of monumental arts between Northern Italy, Dalmatia and Tuscany in the 15th and 16th centuries. The three architects who succeeded one another in the construction of the Cathedral - Francesco di Giacomo, Georgius Mathei Dalmaticus and Niccolò di Giovanni Fiorentino - developed a structure built entirely from stone and using unique construction techniques for the vaulting and the dome of the Cathedral. The form and the decorative elements of the Cathedral, such as a remarkable frieze decorated with 71 sculptured faces of men, women, and children, also illustrate the successful fusion of Gothic and Renaissance art.

About Sibenik...
Sibenik is located just about in the center of the Croatian Adriatic coast, in the picturesque, indented bay that the Krka River, one of the most beautiful karst in Croatia, flows into. Today Sibenik is an administrative-political, economic and socio-cultural center of the Sibenik-Knin County, which spreads along the coast between the shores of Zadar and Split, approximately 100 km long, and its inland reaches as far as the Dinara Mountain, 45 km away.

The Sibenik bay, which is 10 km long and 300-1200 meters wide, opens torwards the open sea and islands through a narrow curving channel. The coastal area of Sibenik stretches only a few kilometers from the sea, to the hilly range of Trtar, and in the southeast to the Svilaja Mountin. This area, in which the most citizens in the county live, experienced a strong urbanization after World War II. Just about all production capacities are located here, and just about all econimic strength an activity of the county are concentrated here.

Stari Grad Plain

Stari Grad Plain on the Adriatic island of Hvar is a cultural landscape that has remained practically intact since it was first colonized by Ionian Greeks from Paros in the 4th century BC. The original agricultural activity of this fertile plain, mainly centring on grapes and olives, has been maintained since Greek times to the present. The site is also a natural reserve. The landscape features ancient stone walls and trims, or small stone shelters, and bears testimony to the ancient geometrical system of land division used by the ancient Greeks, the chora which has remained virtually intact over 24 centuries.

About Stari Grad...
Old Town, is the place of the oldest human settlement on the island, and one of the first of all the Adriatic islands. It was settled during antiquity, first by an indigenous Hvar culture (who spoke an Indo-European language) and later by the ancient Greeks. It is very beautiful and warm during the summer months. Stari Grad is the birthplace of the famous Renaissance writer Petar Hektorovic.
