My Most Prized Possessions

I grew up in one of those "loving hands at home" families where homemade gifts were the norm. My grandmother was talented in many needle crafts and made hundreds of items throughout her life, later specializing in the art of mini-crochet. I'll be sharing her projects later.

The afghans shown here were made especially for me by two very close friends, Lillian and Debby, and they are among my most treasured possessions. Lillian was 90 years old when I first met her, and she has since passed on. The afghans she made for me can never be replaced, and are tangible reminders of her kindness and generosity. I'm so grateful that Lillian was a part of my life—how many people can count a centenarian among their friends?

My Friends Lillian and Debby

Think Pink

Lillian made this afghan to celebrate my new pink-flowered sofas. The sofas didn't make the cut when I later married my husband and consolidated households. The pom-pom pillow is another of her creations. (You guessed it—the pillow isn't currently on display.) Both are safely tucked away for a future guest room or office.

Pepperminty Tones in Green & Pink

One day at the craft store this multi-colored yarn caught my eye. I bought several skeins and asked Lillian if she could recommend a pattern to show it off. I love what she came up with. The alternating green stripes are beautiful and calming.

Pot-purr-ee

This one was a complete surprise. Lillian often made afghans out of yarn scraps, and thought this would be perfect for my cats to sleep on. She was right—they love it (as illustrated by Sammy). After dozens of machine washings, it still looks great!

I Miss My Dear Friend Lillian

This photo is from Lillian's 100th birthday party. She lived to be 101, and retained a sharp wit and wonderful sense of humor throughout her life. Lillian typically had two or three crochet projects in the works. She was legendary for her beautiful afghans, but also made exquisite doilies, pot holders, and baby clothes. Everyone in Lillian's large circle of family and friends had at least one afghan—many of us were fortunate to have been gifted with several of her handmade items.

Lillian was also known for her overflowing gardens, but the person who purchased her home of more than 60 years razed the property and destroyed every tree, rose bush, and bulb in sight, favoring an austere landscape design. (Think "Sanitized For Your Protection") Her family wisely kept this fact hidden from her during the last few years of her life.

How wonderful that Lillian's legacy will live on in her handcrafted afghans, passed down to future generations.

Muted Jewel Shades

My friend Debby started this afghan during a very dark time. Her father passed away unexpectedly, and then her mother was diagnosed with cancer. The afghan was intended as a gift for her mother, but sadly the disease won and the project was abandoned. Several years later I was making last minute preparations for my wedding, when a large parcel arrived during a particularly chaotic and frustrating day. Curious, I opened the box and immediately recognized her mother's afghan. Debby had finished it as a wedding gift for us. I still get teary-eyed when I see this afghan and remember the feelings I had when I first opened the box. My husband and I had a strict "no gift" policy for our wedding, but a few close friends, like Debby, ignored our request. This afghan reminds me of her lovely parents, Raymond and Bette, and I will always cherish it.

Raymond and Bette

Debby and I were roommates for 5 years. Her father Raymond was a physician and kept us in good health. Her mother Bette, a registered nurse, worked part-time at a boutique and kept us in fashionable clothes! Each week Debby received a letter from her dad with the previous week's "Peanuts" comic strip clippings and any other funny things he'd run across that week. Mom Bette would assemble care packages of food and other goodies.

Raymond and Bette later retired to spend more time in their beloved Lake Tahoe cabin. They had been spending summers in Tahoe for decades and enjoyed a large circle of neighbors and lake friends. Their favorite local beach was the social hub. It wasn't unusual for Raymond and Bette to befriend young world travelers and invite them to the cabin for a home-cooked meal. They loved people and the world is an emptier place without them.

I think that crocheting an afghan for someone is truly special. I crocheted years ago, I made doily dolls with fine thread. I wish I would have kept them:( Oh well, maybe someday, when I retire, I'll return to crocheting. Beautiful lens, especially the kitty and yarn. Five stars.
