How to crochet in the Round

The Beginnings of a Hat

In order to make a Hat or Amigurumi in Crochet, you need to know how to crochet in the round. (a circle) It's a bit different than crocheting in rows but not too different to where you will get lost. At the end of this step by step tutorial of how to crochet in the round you will have a small facial scrubbie.

Included is a tutorial which goes into increasing and decreasing to shape your circle for a small head (amigurumi) as well as a base for a hat.

Be sure to take your time, gather the proper tools, and remember to Have FUN.

Bamboo Crochet Hooks are better than aluminum to start out with (In my opinion) as they don't slip as easily.

Crochet a Circle

Learn to Crochet in the Round

For this example I used a large K hook because it shows the stitches better in photos. If you will be making a hat for yourself or a wee one, use the hook that your yarn skein suggests.

Note: the chain 1 in this does not count as a stitch

Step 1 and Step 2:
You are going to chain 3 and then slip stitch into the 3rd chain from the hook. This will make a tiny circle.

Another option for you is to make a Magic Circle but I would suggest learning this method before trying the Magic Circle if you are just learning.

Step 3:
Make 12 single crochets into the middle of the tiny circle you made at the end of Step 2. To do this, chain 1 - now single crochet in the tiny circle, do another 11 single crochets in that circle. Join to the first single crochet you made. Chain 1.

Step 4:
Make your first single crochet in the same stitch as join. Single crochet in each stitch around. [total of 12 single crochets], Join to first sc made.

You now have a completed circle.
Chain 3

Step 1: Chain 3

Step 2: Join with a Slip Stitch 2nd ch from Hook

Step 3: 12 Single Crochets

Step 4: Single Crochet in Each Stitch Around

Complete Circle

Completed Circle

How did you do?

Is it a circle?

Let me know how you did. Did you end up with a circle? Did you get tangled up in your yarn? Did you loose count?

Increasing and Decreasing

This tutorial does not go into increasing or decreasing in order to make items such as amigurumi or hats. I did include a video tutorial for an amigurumi head which goes into this technique.

Crochet in the Round: Making an Amigurumi

Small Amigurumi Head

I really enjoy Teresa's method of teaching crochet. She has literally introduced this craft to thousands of people who thought they'd never learn. She is very thorough and takes you through step by step videos using slow motion. With videos you can see what she is doing and even stop them and rewind.

In this example you will crochet in the round continuously with out chain 1 or joins. [Also known as a spiral]

This is how I learned to crochet from a boyfriend's mom when I was 15. What fun to remember that experience. Thank you for reminding me! I'll have to try it again. Bear hugs, Frankster aka Bearmeister
