About Diamonds - Henry Winston, an American Jeweler

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Harry Winston Jewelers, 5th Avenue, New York City

Harry Winston (March 1, 1896 - December 8, 1978) was an American jeweler. He donated the Hope Diamond to the Smithsonian Institution in 1958 after owning it for a decade, and later donated the Portuguese Diamond as well. He once sent a 726-carat (145 g) rough diamond, the Jonker, through the U.S. Mail, instead of a conventional means of secure transfer.

Winston's jewelry empire began with his acquisition of Arabella Huntington's famous jewelry collection. The wife of railroad magnate Henry Huntington, Arabella amassed one of the world's most prestigious collections of jewelry, largely from Parisian jewelers such as Cartier.

When Winston purchased the collection after her death, the designs of the collection were quite old fashioned. Winston redesigned the jewelry into more contemporary styles and showcased his unique skill at jewelry crafting. According to the Huntington museum, "He frequently boasted that Arabella's famous necklace of pearls now adorned the necks of at least two dozen women around the world."

Winston has said: "People will stare. Make it worth their while."

About Diamonds - Elizabeth Taylor

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Elizabeth Taylor

Taylor has a passion for jewelry. She is a client of well-known jewelry designer, Shlomo Moussaieff (businessman). Over the years she has owned a number of well known pieces, two of the most talked about being the 33.19 carat (6.638 g) Krupp Diamond and the 69.42 carat (13.884 g) pear-shaped Taylor-Burton Diamond, which were among many gifts from husband Richard Burton. Taylor also owns the 50 carat La Peregrina Pearl, purchased by Burton as a Valentine's day present in 1969. The pearl was formerly owned by Mary I of England, and Burton sought a portrait of Queen Mary wearing the pearl. Upon the purchase of the painting, the Burtons discovered that the British National Portrait Gallery did not have an original painting of Mary, so they donated the painting to the Gallery.[11][12] Her enduring collection of jewelry has been eternalized with her book My Love Affair with Jewelry (2002).

A Charitable Idea For Valentines Day

Origin of Valentines Day

This brings us to VALENTINES DAY. There are varying ideas about the origin of VALENTINES DAY. A Christian martyr in the Middle Ages, ST. VALENTINE, died on February 14 and some records indicate that a day was set aside to honor him, believing by some at that time that the center of emotion resided in the HEART.

14 Charitable Ways to Celebrate Valentine's Day

14 Charitable Ways to Celebrate Valentine's Day
Forget the wining and dining. Do something that matters.
by Elaine Gast

Like many people, I've had good Valentine's Days, and...not so good. The not-so-good ones date back to middle school, when I, like many of my classmates, anxiously awaited one of those sweetheart-pink carnations from what I hoped would be a secret admirer. Much to my dismay, the carnation never came. And for years, it left me feeling downright uneasy about the 14th of February.

I later came to realize that Valentine's Day is about much more than flowers and candy, or even being part of a couple. I love that there's a day in our busy lives when we officially celebrate love. I'm not just talking romantic love, like Hallmark would have us believe, but the real-deal, universal "stuff of life" that makes up who we really are. Behind our roles and personalities and professionalism, each of us, at essence, is a living, loving being. Sure, on the other 364 days of the year we might try to fake it, but on this one day attributed to a Saint, the world agrees: Love is where it's at.

Call it spirit, call it sweetness -- whatever you want to call it, we've all got it. It's just a matter of what we do with it. So this Valentine's Day, put the cupids and carnations and conversation-hearts aside. Give of yourself, your time, your heart -- to people you know, and people you don't. Share your love in small ways and big. And best of all, be generous.

There are plenty of ways to do good and feel good this Valentine's Day. Here are a few.

1. Will You Be My...Volunteer? There's no shortage of ways you can help. Volunteer at a local soup kitchen, animal shelter, or favorite nonprofit, or offer to tutor a child in reading or math. You can find loads of opportunities on VolunteerMatch, or check your local college campus for organized events.
