Picking a Crock Pot

Are you in the market for a new crock pot? There are so many options. Which one do you choose? There are some definite things that you need to look for when shopping for a new one.

First, what size crock pot you do need? Crock pots come in various sizes. They range in size from 16 ounces to 7 quarts. They also come in different shapes -- round and oval.

The larger crock pots are great for cooking for large amounts of people. They are also great when cooking whole chickens, large roasts, and large amounts of stews.
The smaller crock pots are great when cooking for 1-2 people. They are great for cooking small amounts of soups, stews, dips, or fondues. They are also great for melting chocolate.

If at all possible, it would be good to have a couple of different size models. This way you will be sure to have exactly the size you need for the number of people that you are serving and the type of dish you are making.

Second, what you are looking for when it comes to ease of cleaning?

Obviously, removable "pots" are much better for ease of cleaning. After it has cooled down, you will be able to soak it in some water. One thing to consider is whether or not the "pot" is dishwasher safe.

Third, do you want a programmable model or one that has the standard settings of high, low, and warm?

Programmable models are nice becaues you can preset a time during the day for it to change temperatures or even shut itself off.

Fourth, do you want the crock pot to coordinate with the decor of your kitchen?

Crock pots come in the traditional white models, stainless steel models, or decorator models. Speciality kitchen stores carry a wide variety.

Cooking Tips

1. Make sure that you buy the right size cut of meat to fit into your crock pot.

2. Trim excess fat off of meat.

3. Remove the skin from poultry before putting it into the crock pot.

4. When cooking in a crock pot, food needs to be brought to a temperature of 140 degrees Fahrenheit as soon as possible. This is for food safety reasons.

5. Fill the crock pots to 1/2 to 2/3 full and not to the brim.

6. Most meats require up to 8 hours to cook.

7. Test the food after several hours of cooking to make sure that the temperature in the crock pot is at least 140 degrees Fahrenheit. If the temp is lower, then there is something the matter with your crock pot.

8. Fresh vegetables tend to cook slower than meat and should be placed in the bottom of the crock pot.

9. Thicken sauces at the end of the cooking time by turning the heat up to high.

10. Remove foods from the liner before putting into the refrigerator. The liner is thick and won't allow the food to quickly cool completely.

Tired of carryout? Crockpot cooking may be the answer for you.

i don't really cook because i'm not very good at it. But this seems almost foolproof! Your tips were a huge help to me and your lens inspired me to want to buy a crock pot. One thing I'm not sure you mentioned though . . . what else do you put in the pot besides the meat and vegetables? also, how do you know when it's done?

I try to use my crockpot every couple of weeks. I like the ease of just adding all the ingredients and letting it go, but I find my crockpot cooks too hot. This is the second one I've had that I need to cut the cooking time by 2-3 hours or everything turns into mush. Does anyone else have this problem?
