Colorful, Fun and...Healthy?

Crocs! You've seen 'em. Those colorful, goofy, clunky, some might even say, homely, shoes with the Swiss cheese holes that look like they're made of plastic (but they're not). Who would have thought they might actually have therapeutic benefits for wearers, in particular, diabetics? But they do! Have I piqued your curiosity? Read on to learn more about Crocs.

Made Of Foam Resin

Crocs Are Non-Slip And Waterproof

Originally produced in Canada in 2002 by Foam Creations for use as non-slip, waterproof deck shoes for boaters or for spa wear, Crocs are not made of plastic, but from a bacteria-resistant, fungus-resistant foam resin which allows the foot to "breathe."

A Favorite Among Nurses

Crocs Are Lightweight And Comfortable

More and more nurses, known for spending hour upon hour on their feet swear by this healthy lightweight and comfortable alternative to the standard crepe-soled nurse shoes of yesteryear or to walking shoes. AP quotes RN Jamie Jessick as saying, "They're so comfortable that it's like wearing slippers at work." Perhaps it is this connection to the nursing profession that first brought Crocs to the attention of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services which has approved the Custom Cloud model of Crocs with molded insoles for its diabetic footwear program.

Of course, nurses aren't the only professionals whose feet would welcome a change from ordinary shoes. The lightweight, breathable Professional line of Crocs would benefit the feet of anyone whose job involves walking. Experience the difference!

Put in a bid and soon you could feel like you're "wearing slippers at work!"

Diabetes Complications

Anti-bacterial Crocs May Help To Alleviate Some Problems

Diabetes takes a particular toll on the feet of sufferers. Because of impaired circulation in the extremities, diabetics are especially susceptible to the development of painful ulcers of the foot and toes, often leading to infection and sometimes to the need for amputation. Crocs' anti-bacterial properties and comfortable fit may help to combat this problem.

Dr. Harold Glickman, DPM, former president of the APMA is quoted by WebMD as saying, "I recommend them to patients all the time, and I wear them all the time. I wear them when I'm operating for three or four hours at a time and I get the sense I'm standing on water-no leg pain, no back pain and no arch pain." He goes on to say that they are as light as flip-flops, but offer more protection and more comfort.

Crocs would be acceptable only for a select few diabetics. Those that are not prone to diabetic foot ulcers, do no have a loss of protective sensation in the feet and whose blood sugar levels remain within targeted range.

The danger lies in that the crocs do not give enough protection over the whole foot. If the person living with diabetes happens to develop an injury over an unprotected part of the foot, it could lead to an infection and if that is left untreated, could lead to amputation.

If you have been assess to have a low risk for developing diabetic foot complications, then by all means, wear crocs from time to time.
