Digestive Diseases: Laughter Can Help

Crohn's is an autoimmune disease that attacks the digestive system. It's painful and oppressive and, really, not very funny. But it's one of those diseases that lends itself to bad puns, wry observations, and bathroom humor. Many sufferers are embracing that aspect of the disease, to lighten the load (see? what did I tell you!) a little bit. No matter how serious and uncomfortable an illness, a little laughter can be a good thing.

In this lens you'll find online resources, book recommendations (and a separate section on cookbooks and nutrition), a wonderful FREE app to help you manage your health, easy ways to help (contacting your legislator or texting a $5 donation), current news about IBD, and more. Vote for your favorite funny slogan or suggest one of your own. Talk about your own experiences, or recommend a resource.

Humor Helps People Digest Serious Issues

IBS Is No Joke, But A Sense of Humor Doesn't Hurt

Super-poopersMy daughter's friend was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease about two years ago and she has faced many challenges, as she struggles to understand her disease and to restructure her life to accommodate it. Dietary restrictions, controlling stress, and sudden attacks are just some of the issues she deals with daily. Serious, chronic autoimmune diseases like Crohn's Disease significantly affect the lives of sufferers -- causing pain, major bowel issues, and, often, dramatically altered lifestyles.

Fortunately, the disease does not appear to rob people of a sense of humor, something that was clearly evident at the the Take Steps fundraising walk sponsored by the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America.

As my daughter and her friend walked and talked with others with inflammatory bowel diseases (and their families), the mood was determined, hopeful, and filled with wry humor. Most teams or groups wore cause-related t-shirts and many of these reflected the wry humor that seems to be an essential way of coping with this often grim health issue. Among the team slogans being carried on signs or worn on t-shirts, my daughter noted the following:

Sh*t Happens
Super Poopers
No Colon and Still Rollin'
Who's Got the Runs?
We Can't Be Colonized
No Guts Sucks
Pooping is Cool

As is the way of these things, the slogans sparked some additional thoughts and ideas. Her friend's father had suggested (and been outvoted on) naming their team The Bowel Movement. My daughter responded with No Guts, No Glory. Some others that were suggested:

You Need a Strong Stomach to Have Crohn's
Got Guts?
We Don't Need No Stinkin' Roughage

This shirt started us drafting a list of some common phrases that might mean something different when said by someone with Crohn's, IBD, colitis, etc.:

Colitis

Feel free to add your own suggestions in the coments section. This is an annual event, after all. Similar walks take place around the country.

Gotta Go
Hold That Thought
I'm Pooped
Walk, Don't Run

The humor is what got me focused on the topic of Inflammatory Bowel Syndrome, which is the umbrella name for a constellation of related diseases centered in the digestive tract. Many of these -- and Crohn's is one -- are really autoimmune diseases.

The humor is what got me to start doing some research and prompted me to send a donation to the CCFA (Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America). I apologize if the "bathroom humor" offends anyone, but it is a fundamental aspect of these diseases and one that aptly lends itself to some gentle (or defiant) humor.

donate to crohns

Perhaps you know someone who suffers from one these digestive, autoimmune diseases. As I mentioned, I certainly do. Perhaps you know someone who suffers from intestinal issues and doesn't know why. These diseases seem to be spreading and seem to be affecting people at earlier ages. If this is so, then sooner or later, the topic will become more public. I think it should be sooner.

The Sh*t List

Very Funny Crohn's Humor

Bowel-movement-ribbonThis is a list of descriptive names and explanations for various types of bowel movements. The introduction states, in part, that the page contains a ". . .load of scatalogical humor. If you don't think feces can be funny stop reading here." Among the excremental items described is The Sh*t List.

  • Lincoln Log (or perhaps the Lincolon Log)
  • Liquid
  • Second Wave
  • Ghost
  • Guiness Book of Records
  • Corn
  • The Crowd Pleaser
  • The Mood Enhancer
  • The Ritual
  • The Aftershock
  • The "Honeymoon's Over"
I have chosen to list the more benign names here. Please visit the site for the complete list with explanations.

For a more official discussion of fecal categories (and yes, there is a picture for each of the 7 categories), see the Bristol Stool Scale.

Cook Food You Can Digest

Cookbooks and Nutrition

The guidelines say to eat a healthy balanced diet and then go on to give an enormous list of foods (and food categories) that are pretty much off-limits. How, then, do you manage your diet so that your body gets not only the right balance of nutrients but also sufficient calories? The process can be complicated and, at the beginning especially, overwhelming to figure out. Here are some cookbooks and eating guides designed to de-mystify the process of eating right when your digestive tract is rebelling. A number of different approaches and philosophies are represented. Each book listed has at least 30 Amazon reviews and an average rating of at least 4.5.

A Mug "To Go"

and 2 to stay

Mugs aren't just for coffee, which is a good thing, since coffee is on the "avoid" list of liquids for the Crohn's/IBD diet. Here are a few mugs from which to drink your favorite allowable beverage (I know, I know) while quietly underscoring your support for this critical health issue. Of course, if you do not have IBD and just want to publicise the issue on behalf of a friend or family member, these mugs are a great way to do so while enjoying your morning coffee. (Note: The reverse of the babies mug has a purple cause ribbon that reads: The Bowel Movement. The talk bubbles mug is a wrap-around design.) The most recent design is featured on the "To-Go" mug...

A Visit from St. Ostomy

T'was the night before Christmas and all through the flat,
There was general confusion, including the cat.
The bathroom was strewn with the ostomy ware,
That I had abandoned with utter despair...

  • TheHealthGuy Feb 17, 2012 @ 5:48 pm | delete
I laughed and I guess humor is good but sometimes when it's you personally who suffers or someone you love and you have to watch them suffer it sometimes the moment isn't so funny. My mom was misdiagnosed with crohn's in fact she'd still be crapping all over if it weren't for my doctor who diagnosed me with Celiac Disease about two years ago. I had my mother's doctor test her and she too tested positive. Fortunately, a gluten free diet has worked well for my mom and she no longer has to look for the restroom everywhere she goes. This is a very well done lens and like I said it did make me laugh :-)
  • resabi Feb 17, 2012 @ 6:48 pm | delete
I'm glad you were able to help your mom get diagnosed correctly. Sorry that you both suffer with Celiac. Crohn's and colitis affect a number of people in my family so I am not a stranger to the disease. I see what it does. Finding whatever light there is (and humor definitely qualifies) is just something that can help us bear something that feels unbearable.

This is excellent, as a Gastroenterologist I would agree entirely that humour is very important and arguably a treatment in its own right!

I have this disease and have had it for 15+ years. Luckily for me I am fortunate to have it mildly. This lens made me laugh.
The good news is that last time I saw my gastro doctor she told me that because of the recent drug improvements most people don't need surgery any more. This is something that newly diagnosed people should remember because it just seems terrifying at first.
    Thanks for making this..
  • beccacena Oct 5, 2011 @ 8:58 pm | delete
This is my 20-year anniversary of being diagnosed with Crohn's. After 2 surgeries, I have done well for many years now. I am one of the lucky ones and I remind myself of this often.

I bought a house a few years ago and the top item on my "must have" list was at least 2 toilets. I told my realtor I didn't care if there was just a toilet sitting in the middle of the garage or the basement but there had to be 2 of them. I ended up with 2 full bathrooms. Yay!

Great lens because s*** is gonna happen with Crohn's so you might as well try to laugh about it.
