What is the Difference Between Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis

Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis are both forms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). While they are similar, there are several differences between them.

Crohn's Disease can affect anywhere along the digestive tract (from mouth to anus) but usually involves the small intestine (terminal ileum) and maybe the long intestine. Its appearance (as seen through a colonoscopy) is like cobblestone. The disease can also appear intermittently, with healthy portions areas surrounded by diseased portions. Pain is usually felt in the lower-right portion of the intestine.

Ulcerative Colitis almost always affects The rectum, and it may work its way up the body to affect the sigmon colon and any or all of the large intestine. Its appearance is making the colon appear to look thinner and it no patches of healthy intestine will be found within diseased portions. Pain will usually occur in the bottom left area of the intestines. There is also usually blood loss during a UC sufferer's bowel movements. This is one of the easiest ways that doctors use to make a quick guess of whether an individual has Crohn's or Colits (a colonoscopy and other tests can confirm this initial diagnosis).

Some people are never fully diagnosed as having Crohn's Disease or Ulcerative Colitis, as it can not be determined which form of IBD they suffer from. Other people have Crohn's Colitis, which is Crohn's Disease that only affects the large intestine.
