Cerridwen and Hecate

I believe by now you have a good understanding of who Lynsi Eastburn is to me. We are Spirit Sisters who have been reconnected again in this life time for the past 13 years. Both of us have memories of the cabin we share together back a few hundred years ago. The most important thing in both of our lives is the connection we continue to have in this life.

When I was about 40, I was sitting at my kitchen table harvesting some thyme that I had dried. I looked over towards my sink area and there stood a crone watching me. It was from that day on that I knew Cerridwen was my Crone Goddess. I had been studying herbs for a long while at that time, and since I have acknowledged Cerridwen, herbs and the cauldron have become even More important to me.

Lynsi just recently has acknowledged that Hecate is her Crone Goddess. I thought both of us recognizing our Crones at the same age was a huge stepping stone in our lives.

This lens is about the Crone Goddesses, Cerrridwen and Hecate. I hope that if you are reaching the age in your life where the Crone is knocking at your Spiritual Door you will welcome the one presenting their self to you with open arms.

From: Jean Shinoda Bolen, M.D. - Crones Don't Whine Book

"Crones don't whine. They're juicy and they trust their instincts. They don't grovel. They do meditate. They choose the path with heart. Crones are fierce about what matters most to them. They speak the truth with compassion. They listen to their bodies, reinvent themselves as needed and savor the good in their lives."

Cerridwen

Cerridwen: (Kare-ID-wen) Welsh Crone-is considered one of the Old Ones that embodies all three Lunar aspects of the Triple Goddess; Maiden, Mother and Crone. Although Cerridwen does embody the Lunar aspects of the triple goddess is mainly viewed as the Crone. Cerridwen was originally worshipped by the Walsh, but is also the Celtic Goddess of Inspiration, Knowledge and Wisdom.

Cerridwen is symbolized by the Cauldron of Wisdom, Inspiration, Rebirth and Transformation. The cauldron, cup and chalice are all associated with femininity. The cauldron is an ancient feminine symbol of renewal, rebirth, and transformation. It represents the Womb of the Great Goddess which all things are born and reborn again.

There are many different versions of Cerridwens cauldron. A short version is: She had two children a beautiful girl and an ugly son. She decided to brew a potion in her cauldron for one year and one day using many different herbs and roots. Everything was added to the cauldron at the exact time it was suppose to be added. She wanted to make her son brilliant and inspire all men to ensure he had a good life.

Cerridwen had a blind man keep the fire going under the cauldron and found another young man to keep stirring the cauldron while she gathered herbs and roots she needed each day. One day by accident, some of the brew splattered on the young man's hand and it was absorbed by him. When Cerridwen found out she pursued him. During the chase, each of them kept transforming into different animals. The young man had an idea to transform himself into a piece of grain. Cerridwen transformed herself into a hen and it is said she swallowed the piece of grain. In nine months she gave birth to a child and contemplated killing it but instead threw it into the water. The child was rescued by a Celtic Prince. Many of the symbolic meanings come from Tales, this one represents rebirth, transformation and change.

Hecate

Hecate is known as the Greek Goddess of the three paths. She is guardian of the household, protector of everything newly born. Hecate is the Goddess of Witchcraft. Throughout the centuries her reputation has been tarnished and she is viewed as the hag or old witch stirring the cauldron.

Hecate's kingdoms are three fold, the earth, sea and sky. She has the power to create or withhold storms undoubtedly gave her the title of Moon Goddess because of her role in protecting the shepherds and sailors.

The Goddess Hecate often walked the roads and visited cemeteries at night and during the dark phase of the moon. She was a lover of solitude and was always seen walking the night with a torch. Legends tell this could be how she was often called: the Shining Light or Star.

Hecate, "Queen of the Night" often traveled with a following of ghost and other social outcast. Often she was accompanied on her travels by an owl (which is a symbol for wisdom) although; she is not viewed as the Goddess of Wisdom, none-the-less she is recognized for a unique type of knowledge.

Hecate had a great eye for detail, farsightedness combined with her extraordinary interest in what most consider irrelevant, gave her great power. Hecate reminds us of the importance of change and how important it is to release the past and/or what has already taken place. She teaches us that stepping into the unknown and leaving our secured place behind teaches us great lessons on our journey. Hecate is always there for those who honor and acknowledges her, therefore she is always there to help you during any rebirth process, offering support and often showing you the way. So if during mediation or dreamtime, you feel lost, when you see that spark of light, that is Hecate holding the torch to show you the way.

Dogs are very sacred to Hecate, especially black ones. Her sacred bird is the Owl. Her symbols are the crossroads, blazing torch and hounds. Hecate is Goddess of the Dead, Queen of the Night. She is worshipped at the intersection of three roads where she walks with her hounds and illuminating the night with her torch. Hecate's wisdom: is reclaiming your power as a wise woman. She is keeper of women's ancient mysteries and helps you to remember the importance of the dark, because by doing so, it helps to fearlessly accept the joys and challenges of life.
