From the lens Crop Failures 2010 - Due to the BP Gulf Oil Spill.

I'm a CSA farmer in North West Alabama. In early July I noticed a thick, yellow haze over my farm. I became very sick with chronic coughing, fever, nausea and fatigue. Our tomatoes usually produce fruit until March here but stated turning yellow and dying in mid-July. Our bell peppers rot before they mature and the garden is in really bad shape. I called a temporary crop failure in August. The new seed beds I planted in mid-July never even germinated.

This is just another aspect of the deregulation ideology of recent decades. Banks and big business do need regulation, and the market doesn't always do the right thing.

I've been quietly seething over this incident. I'm glad you did this blog; if I had, I'm afraid it would be just too consuming for my psyche. Beware Mother Earth is angry and she is extracting her revenge. The avaricious ones caused this spill, but we will all pay.

What is even more important that this tragedy goes beyond damaging crops or beaches in the US. It affects the whole world, it's a ripple effect.

I agree with you there. It looks like the entire world is in for it now.

It just gets worse and worse! Clearly the Gulf oil disaster far-reaching environmental disaster, way beyond the immediate and obvious problems. Good job on bringing this to our attention!

Yes, a disaster. It's so much worse than just oil in the Gulf (as if that's not dreadful enough) but crop destruction is in the very high probability range, Storing food is definitely the way to go. A disturbing lens. Blessed by an angel today

Thank you for writing this lens and bringing this concern to everyone's attention. I have added this link to the featured lenses on my "Efforts to Save the Animals" lens. There are many ramifications of this mess to consider and I am thrilled that you have considered and written about this probability.

Very scary. I'll be keeping a close eye on hurricane season this year.

This is a scary proposition. We may never know the full ramifications of this disaster.
