The colors of Crop OverCrop Over is a celebration that spans five weeks on the island of Barbados. It begins with the Ceremonial Delivery of the Last Canes, where the King and Queen of Crop Over are crowned. These are the two most productive sugar cane harvesters of the season.

Bridgetown Market is an opportunity to see the local crafters and sample the tastes of Barbados. Vendors set up booths and line the streets to show off their wares. While there, be sure you have a taste of the national dish, flying fish and couscous.

Calypso Bands are a big part of Crop Over

Calypso is one of the main things about Crop Over. Calypsonians compete in "tents" where the competition is stiff and the prizes coveted. The calypso competition ends with the finals of the Pico-de-Crop competition at the National Stadium, where the winners are crowned. Calypso music gives you a taste of the island. Find your favorite songs here and be sure your iPod is loaded! While I lived in the Caribbean, I learned to love the steel drum music and what it brings to culture.

The Big Climax: Grand Kadooment

Parades

Kadooment Day is a public holiday in Barbados. It is the grand finale of the Crop Over season, with a parade that goes down the Spring Garden Highway into the city. My first year in Barbados, I recall one of my students asking me if I was going to "jump" in the Kadooment parade. They were all very excited about their costumes and plans to "jump" that day. Now, remember, I am just a naive American who was new to the island. I had visions of people literally jumping down the road! I said, "you mean, jump, like a kangaroo?" Fortunately for me, they were good natured about their teacher's lack of knowledge. Jumping is the term used for what is done as one walks along the parade route. It's really quite choreographed and, as I learned from a long time Barbadian, was created as a walk/dance that can be done for long periods of time without getting too tired. And so, Kadooment is the day to jump in the big parade! And just in case you are wondering, I did not jump, I'm a much better spectator!
