Preparing Your Fabric For Counted Cross Stitch

The disadvantage to purchasing a leaflet instead of a kit is that you will then have to purchase your own fabric and floss. Each leaflet does give you the colors that you will need but not necessarily how many skeins of floss you might need. Generally 1 skein of a color will work for most patterns.

What is a Skein of Floss?
A skein is a bundle of six-strand embroidery floss about 8 yards long. The skein is held together by small paper tubes on which the brand and color number are printed.

What is Aida Fabric?
Aida Fabric is a 100% cotton fabric with woven thread groupings that form tiny squares. Aida fabric was designed specifically for Counted Thread Embroidery such as Cross Stitch. Aida is easy to work with and comes in many counts. The count is the number of holes per inch in the fabric. The larger the number in the count, the smaller the finished project will be. 14 count aida will give you 14 cross stitches per inch where 8 count aida would give you 8 stitches per inch.

- Must get my cross stitch kits out again - after I finish my knitting projects this winter - lol!
I agree that the best way for a complete novice to begin projects like cross stitch birth samplers is to buy a couple of simple kits first. Then they have absolutely everything they need for the project, without having to invest in whole skiens of thread in each colour etc. and with full materials and instructions.
Then as they learn more about what patterns and colours they like to use in their creations they can buy some pattern books and slowly build up their whole range of colours.
Once your kit is set up, it pretty much lasts a lifetime, just refreshing your most used colors of thread when you need - so much fun for many years to come!

- I do love cross stitch. I cannot stitch anymore but oh I stitched many many wonderful hours. When our first grandchild was christened, someone presented the parents with a crossstitch sampler noting the date. Such a precious precious gift.
When I think of cross stitch days, I think of "just one more row and I will go to bed".......lol stayed up way way too late too many nights!

- I used to do cross stitch and embroidery many, many moons ago, but now concentrate on crochet. One of my favorite wall hangings is a framed scene of seashells cross-stitched for me as a mother-in-law gift from my new DIL when she married my son. I love not only her work, but the thought behind it.
