Dominica: Nature Island Of The Caribbean
It is one of the youngest islands in the Caribbean and it's lush mountainous rainforests are gifted with the world's second largest boiling lake. Waterfalls abound and it is easy to see why it is called the "Nature Isle of the Caribbean".
The oficial language is English, but the people also speak a French creole, since it's neighbor to the North is Guadeloupe, and to the South is Martinique, two of the French colonial possessions. Due to that fact it has been called French Dominica by some.
As a cruise destination, it is one of my "very" favorite islands. Much of the island still has the feel of a tropical paradise. And, as you can see from the panoramic view of it's capitol city, Rouseau, even the cities have a natural beauty not found very frequently.
This lens is one of a series that the author is providing on over twenty cruise destinations in the Caribbean. Each lens will include general information on the destination, suggested shore excursions, and video and photographic illustrations where appropriate.

Starting Your Shore Excursions

The picture above shows the dock entrance to the city of Roseau, Dominica as you depart the ship. Frequently you will find groups playing steel drums, or other instruments, welcoming the cruise passengers like the ones in the photo below.
Cars, taxis and tour buses are lined up waiting to fill their vehicles with passengers and their wallets with tourism dollars.
Welcome Group At Dock

Carnival "Destiny" Docked In Roseau
On this particular cruise, we arrived on the Carnival Destiny, which you see here docked in Roseau. The dock photo in the top frame was taken from the Destiny just before disembarking to go on our Trafalgar Falls excursion for the day.
The cruise ship dock is very convenient to downtown Roseau, as you can see here. It makes it very convenient for those who want to walk off, shop a little, come back for lunch and go out again.
It also makes it easy to get to your shore excursion point of departure quickly.
Shore Excursions
On my last trip I chose to take an excursion to Trafalgar Falls. I had been there before but this time I was with some of my children and grandchildren who had not seen it before. It was well worth seeing for the second time. I will be taking one or two of the other shore excursions on my next trip to Dominica.
If you decide to take an organized shore excursion you can only choose one or two within the time you have available.
If you happen to make a choice you don't like (that's not very likely though), remember that you can always see different locations on your NEXT cruise to Dominica like I intend to do.
I am listing a few of the shore excursions offered by Carnival cruise lines below. The full list of twenty +/- excursions can be found HERE or you can click on the link to each individual excursion listed below to get more details.
Note: Cruise lines are constantly changing specific excursions, but the sites listed below should still found in some combination of shore excursions.
- Rainforest & Emerald Pool: 3 hours This excursion wil show you why Dominica is known as the 'Nature Island'.
- Dominica's Favorites: 5 hours Trafalgar Falls (see following photo) and Emerald Pool are two of the most popular attractions in Dominica. This is your opportunity to visit both. Your excursion begins with a drive through the capital city of Rouseau to the Botanical Gardens. After visiting Trafalgar falls you will head to Canefield Estates and ultimately arrive at Trois Pitons National Park, home of the spectacular Emerald Pool.

- River Hike to Sari Sari Falls: 5 hours NEW! Prepare for an exciting and challenging river hike to one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the Caribbean.
- Whale Watch: 4 hours Cruise Dominica's scenic West Coast in search of deep diving sperm whales.
- Hot Springs Escape: 3 hours Escape for a few hours of relaxation for both your mind and body.
- Hiking to the Middleham Falls: 4 hours Get ready for an energetic hike to one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Dominica, Middleham Falls.
- Dominica Pre-columbus Carib Indian Experience: 6.5 hours Immerse yourself in the traditions and history of the local Carib Indians.

Trafalgar Falls
One of my favorite shore excursions in Dominica is Trafalgar Falls. After a brief bus or van ride, you arrive at the entrance, and take a walk through a tropical paradise to get to the falls area. Both the walk and the view of the falls are spectacular.
Trail Leading Down To Trafalgar Falls Cascades And Pool Area
The tropical beauty of Dominica is known worldwide, and the trail down to the base of Trafalgar Falls gives one an understanding of why its beauty is so aclaimed. The stands of bamboo, cascading stream, and general tropical foliage give a preview of what is to come when you actually arrive a few minutes later at the falls themselves.
The following photos were taken along the trail as we descended toward the falls area. The last was taken at the bottom of the trail in the area surrounding the falls.
Is it any wonder that Dominica is called the Nature Island of The Caribbean?

Kids Playing In Pool At Base Of Trafalgar Falls
Wherever there is water, there will be kids playing in it. And the pool surrounded and engulfed by the huge rocks at the base of Trafalgar Falls provides a perfect location for this type of enjoyment.Brief Preview of Dominica
Dominica, (French: Dominique) officially the Commonwealth of Dominica, is an island nation in the Caribbean Sea. To the north-northwest lies Guadeloupe, to the southeast Martinique. Its size is and the highest point in the country is Morne Diablotins, which has an elevation of . The Commonwealth of Dominica has an estimated population of 72,500. The capital is Roseau.
Dominica has been nicknamed the "Nature Isle of the Caribbean" for its seemingly unspoiled natural beauty. It is the youngest island in the Lesser Antilles, still being formed by geothermal-volcanic activity, as evidenced by the world's second-largest boiling lake. The island features lush mountainous rainforests, home of many very rare plant, animal, and bird species. There are xeric areas in some of the western coastal regions, but heavy rainfall can be expected inland. The Sisserou parrot, the island's national bird, is featured on the national flag. Dominica's economy is heavily dependent on both tourism and agriculture.
In the next hundred years after Columbus' landing, Dominica remained isolated, and even more Caribs settled there after being driven from surrounding islands as European powers entered the region. France formally ceded possession of Dominica to the United Kingdom in 1763. The United Kingdom then set up a government and made the island a colony in 1805. The emancipation of African slaves occurred throughout the British Empire in 1834, and, in 1838, Dominica became the first British Caribbean colony to have a legislature controlled by blacks. In 1896, the United Kingdom reassumed governmental control of Dominica, turning it into a crown colony. Half a century later, from 1958 to 1962, Dominica became a province of the short-lived West Indies Federation. In 1978, Dominica became an independent nation.

History of Dominica
The Arawaks were guided to Dominica, and other islands of the Caribbean, by the South Equatorial Current from the waters of the Orinoco River. These descendants of the early Tainos were overthrown by the Kalinago tribe of the Caribs.
The Caribs, who settled here in the 14th century, called the island Waitikubuli, which means 'tall is her body'. Christopher Columbus named the island after the day of the week on which he spotted it - a Sunday ('Doménica' in Italian) - which fell on November 3, 1493.
Daunted by fierce resistance from the Caribs and discouraged by the absence of gold, the Spanish did not settle the island. Many of the remaining Carib people live in Dominica's Carib Reserve, a Territory on Dominica's east coast.

The Dominica Story: A History of the Island
By A Customer: I've read Lennox Honychurch's Book THE DOMINICA STORY and it is the most comprehensive book you will ever get on the history of the island of Dominica. From the arrival of the Caribs and Awaraks on their flimsy conoe to the arrival of Christopher Colombus and the Europian invasion on the island. The early politics on the islan is disected and put together as you turn the pages revealing the rich history of the "nature island of the caribbean".
From the Bush: The Front Line of Health Care in a Caribbean Village (Case Studies in Cultural Anthropology)
This case study will be the first to deal with a topic in medical anthropology. It explores the world of folk medicine in the Caribbean (Dominica) - local beliefs and practices concerning how the body functions and malfunctions and the home remedies Dominicans use to cure common illnesses. The case study goes beyond discussing the exotic medical system of a developing country (which includes sorcery and folk-illnesses) to discuss how folk medicine flourishes in industrialized countries in a way that is little different than that practiced in Dominica. The theme is that cultural ideas about the body and uses of medicinal plants are deeply intertwined. Ideas about illness direct the consequent medical response. The book's topic is important because knowledge of local ethnomedical practice is essential for development of public health interventions in non-Western settings. This realist ethnography is aimed at any member of the generally educated population.
