Boom in North-East Tourism
In a reversal to the trend of that shows that, apart from London, tourist numbers have slowed in the UK, a North-East Tourism spokesman stated that numbers traveling between Newcastle and Amsterdam grew to their largest ever for a single year in 2009.This number was greatly helped by the strength of the Pound in comparison to the Euro. Making the trip very attractive to tourists and business customers alike from the north of Europe.
This has also helped keep the local economy ticking along, with Hotels in Newcastle enjoying a brisk trade, throughout the year.
The spokesman said "The daily crossings between Newcastle and Amsterdam are vital to tourism in the North-East as well as providing a gateway in to Europe for the region"
Ferry Ticket Advice
How to get cheaper Ferry Tickets
There are many ways to try and find ways of cutting your outlay without cutting corners on your comfort.
1 Plan Early
If you plan well ahead you can size up all of options, from final destination to duration of your stay. Above all look to see on which days companies charge more to travel [normally Fridays], and try to avoid those days.
2 Choose your Route Well
The most direct route is not always the best, for example if you were traveling to Hamburg in North Germany from the South of England, to travel on the congested Dover-Calais makes your journey more difficult than were you to travel from Harwich to Esbjerg in Denmark, just 50 miles from the German border.
3 Book Early
Many reliable Ferry Companies give a discount for customers who book well in advance, not only that but if you try to book late you could find that the dates you wish to travel are taken, and you have to go at peak traveling time.
4 Book Online
Again, many operators offer a discount for those who buy ferry tickets online, this is not always the case but it is worth trying to ask the company if they would be willing.
5 Travel out of Season
Not for everybody, I know. A bit difficult with a family, but for others, this can dramatically reduce the prices, as Ferry companies hate setting sail unless they have sold every ferry ticket.
6 Avoid Names
The Largest Ferry operators use their name to influence you to travel with them, but if you look around there are several smaller companies who concentrate on doing their best on committed routes, cheaper than bigger companies, who have to many routes to pay attention to the little details.
UK Cruise Travel Boom
We at Cruise Ferry Travel long ago gave up on the myriad of probelms associated with flight travel and decided to focus on cruise ferries for the majority of our travel.
It seems that we are not alone in our thoughts on this. Despite the double-barrelled effects of rising fuel prices and the (tedium ahoy) credit crunch, the UK cruise ferries sector is set to expand over the next few years, with the major operators increasing capacity and expanding routes to keep pace with this rise in demand.
There is now a large group of travellers who enjoy european city breaks, mini-cruise breaks, spa breaks and caravan holidays via ferry travel.
As consumers who are being squeezed tight financially, value for money has become paramount - this is where cruise travel has a distinct advantage over flight - ferries provide a far more relaxing overall experience.
Many cruise boats now have well appointed cabins, restaurants & cafés, onboard entertainment, bars, lounges and a variety of shops. Improved ferry experiences have attracted many families and the over 55s age group, keen to avoid the pressures of travelling from an airport.
All this is good news for us - there should be plenty of ferry news to report on in the coming months.

Five Ways Cruises Trounce Planes, Trains and Automobiles
The chilled out way to travel
As we have made patently clear, cruises are the way we like to travel. This isnt just a decision that we have come top quickly or easily, there is a sound reasoning behind our thoughts, built on years of travel experience. Here are five prinicipal factors as to why cruise travel knocks the others into a cocked hat!
1) Crusies give you a sense of journey - In all seriousness there is something preferable to travelling by ferry. Perhaps its the expanse of the sea, cruise trvel provides a greater sense of escape than every other mode of transport. Its seems to be better for the soul!
2) Cruise ferry facilities are excellent - The major ferry operators ships all have great facilities, with restaurants, shops, bars and lounges. There is literally something for everyone on these cruise boats.
3) Travelling by road can be tedious - Roadworks everywhere make any journey over 20 miles practically impossible and travelling to continental europe is so stop start it becomes unbearable..
4) Train travel is too expensive and complicated - especially when travelling to the continent. Most trains from the UK to the continent go through London, which for most of us means changing numerous times. Also, the trains in this country are still unreliable, you are never quite sure if and when they are going to appear. Couple this with double inflation rises in ticket prices in early 2009 and train travel becomes increasingly unattractive.
5) Air travel is alot of hassle - Airports are so restrictive these days that getting through them can be an exhausting experience. We are fed up with lost luggage and long queues for no reason. Maybe its time we stepped off the plane, and got on the boat!

2. Cruise along Amsterdam's Canals
Travelling on Amsterdam canals is the only way to get a truly experience the unique urban design of the city. You can easily get on one of the canal boats or hire a canal bike and pedal round yourselves. Night-time or sunset is probabaly the best time to take a cruise.

My favourite cities
Thought I'd compile a list of my favourite cities. If your city isn't one of them, don't be offended. I may not have been there!
1. Glasgow - a world class city, large, sprawling, diverse, vibrant. Maybe a bit too rainy. Best things: the Indian food, the pubs, the people.
2. Manchester - see no. 1 for description.
3. Copenhagen - history and modernity combine with great people, great food. Like being in a film.
4. Edinburgh- some great buildings, very atmospheric. Great oubs.
5. Amsterdam - the dream destination for people who only speak English, and a fine city as well.
Just outside of the top 5 is London, but I don't really class London as a city so much as a self-contained universe.
Travelling around cities in the UK is easy enough with a plethora of travel methods including trains, buses, using your car, etc, but getting to cities like Amsterdam and Copenhagen isn't much of a stretch. Ferries & cruise bookings Ferries and cruise bookings can be dome effortlessly online, saving a lot of hassle, and getting a ferry across the sea always adds to the anticipation of new adventures abroad,

cities within reach of The Dam
Bruges - less than 3 hours away. Awesome city, awesome buildings
Cologne - again, less than 3 hours. Big modern city with lots to do.
Eindhoven - compact city in south Netherlands, with shops, galleries, museums and markets. An hour and a half from Amsterdam.
So take a
and get around the area a bit. So much to see, so much to do.
