Baby Boomers Enjoy Riding Beach Cruiser Bikes

There is something nostalgic about the style of bicycles that they rent out at the seashore. They depict a time gone by, a time when life was not so stressful and hectic. The simple design with no fancy handbreaks, bells or whistles evokes thoughts of quiet, peaceful rides around the sandy beach towns of yesteryear. The Cruiser style bike with the fenders and thick frame is making a huge comeback these days, especially with those in the baby boomer age group. Manufacturers realize the popularity of these bikes and have been churning them out over the past few years. The white-walled wide tires were originally created to help with navigation through the sandy areas at the beach and offered a very smooth comfy ride.

There are so many styles, prices and colors available today that there is a bike for every budget and taste. Many beach cruiser bikes have been "modernized" though and can come with handbreaks and some upgraded features but it is not difficult to find a basic bare bones version with just a basket on the handlebars.

When purchasing, consider the area that you will be biking in. If it is fairly flat with no hills then a basic bike will do but if you must navigate some hilly or mountainous terrain then a bike with adjustable gears would benefit you. The styling of the cruiser bike will still be the standout !

Biking Minutes a Day May Ward Off Weight Gain

Biking For Health & Weight Loss
Biking for as little as five minutes a day can help women minimize weight gain as they enter middle age, especially if they're overweight to begin with, a new study suggests.

Bike Riding For Health

It's Never Too Late to Start an Exercise Program

If you, like many, many baby boomers and seniors have a sedentary lifestyle (that you are ready to change!) or haven't exercised in a while, but are looking to shape up - then now is the time ! It is never too late to begin to strengthen and heal your body. Exercise - along with eating well - is the answer. One of the easiest ways to exercise is to ride a bike. You can start out slow and go at your own pace and as you build endurance you will soon be surprised at how far you can ride.

Bike riding is perfect because there is no stress placed upon any sore or arthritic joints. If biking seems to be a far reach for you because you lack confidence in your skills then start out with something else such as walking or swimming gently or some basic yoga moves. Even riding on a stationary bike is a wonderful exercise. They say once you learn to ride a bike you never forget how. That may be true for the younger generations but as we age we tend to encounter issues with balance, coordination and dangers of falling. So these issues must be evaluated by you and your doctor if you feel any fear of bike riding based on those types of concerns.

As with any course of physical fitness you need to start out slowly and don't overdo it. In time you will see improvement with consistent effort. Before you know it you will be riding in a cycling club with a bunch of other folks or entering the Senior Olympics! Ok, I know , that is not the goal of most folks ! Being able to ride at the beach or around town with ease and confidence is the real goal. The beach cruiser style bike is perfect for those leisurely jaunts. Remember to always check with your doctor especially if you haven't in a while and just take it slow and steady.

Review

"The authors, doctors all, explore the merits of physical activity pass the 50-year mark, providing plans and fine-tuning existing programs.

Regardless of age, say the authors, everyone should feel the exhiliration of exercise and derive the health benefits from a solid workout. They understand it's never easy to start: You have to get motivated, find time, assess risk and safety issues and develop an individualized plan. Since this can be daunting, the authors start from the beginning-getting started, then preparing, acting and maintaining the program. They stress the importance of keeping things interesting and challenging, and they give special emphasis to lifestyle changes that use everyday activities to help you keep fit: take the stairs, walk the dog, forget drive-up windows, don't use anything remote. Stage by stage, the authors provide the mental, emotional and behavioral skills necessary to keep active, and the workbook format is a useful tool.

A simple, encouraging guide to maintaining fitness after the age of 50."

Bike Riding Safety Tips for Baby Boomers and Seniors

Before heading out on your beach cruiser bike for a jaunt around town, always give your bicycle a mechanical once-over. Test the breaks, make sure the bell or whistle works, mirrors are secure, the seat is tight and not wiggling around, the chain is tight and well lubed and the handlebars are secure. If the tires feel low on air then inflate them.

Most bike stores and outdoor outfitters have programs where you can bring your bike in regularly for a tune-up and repair inspections. Sometimes it is a FREE service offered with the purchase of a bike for a warranty period or there is a nominal fee.

If you ride at dusk or even at night be sure that you wear light colored reflective clothing and that your bike has reflectors as well as a headlight and tail light. Riding after dark increases the chance of being involved in an accident, so ride with extreme care. It is more difficult to be seen by cars and is also more difficult for you to see any obstacles or potholes in the roadway.

HELMET: ALWAYS WEAR A HELMET! 'Nuf Said

Even the weather forecast should be part of your safety check before heading out. Getting caught in a downpour or a thunderstorm can put a real damper on your ride. You can become delayed or encounter extremely slippery, dangerous conditions.

If possible, ride with a buddy. If not let someone know that you are going for a bike ride and what route you be taking.

Basic Hand Signals for Bike Safety

Practice and use these proper hand signals when in traffic.

Some other basic bike safety rules:

* Obey all traffic signs and signals.

* Ride single file on streets and highways and keep to the right WITH the flow of traffic.

* Use proper HAND SIGNALS when in traffic (Shown in Picture)

* Slow down and look carefully before crossing intersections

* Be alert for other vehicles, especially cars pulling out from the curb

* Don't shoot out of driveways

*Give PEDESTRIANS the right of way

* If you must ride at night, be sure to wear light-colored clothing and to have a headlight on the front of your bike and a red reflector on the rear.

* Always wear a helmet !

ESSENTIALS to Carry While Bike Riding

To continue on about safety while biking, here are a few suggestions for some items you may want to carry along with you - just in case. As an adult member of the Boy Scouts of America, I have learned that the motto of "be prepared" is the most important lesson in life. It applies to everything we do.

It is not a bad idea to have a basket on your bike or to carry a small backpack with a few essential emergency items. If you never have to use them that is great - that is actually the goal, but if you should ever encounter a situation where you become hurt or stranded then these items will help you immensely.

* Extra Water / Food ( a snack)
* First Aid Supplies
* Small Flashlight
* Extra Clothing/ Jacket
* Rain Gear/Poncho
* Sun Protection /Hat
* Cell Phone (A bike can breakdown or the weather can break loose )

If you take any medications it would be a good idea to take an extra dose with you in the event that you are delayed and don't get home in time to take your regularly scheduled dose, especially for those longer bike rides or bike treks.

Change Your Life ... Ride A Bike
A BLOG for people to share how riding a bike has changed their life!

Bicycles are transformative objects. They have helped liberate women at the end of the 19th century, provided affordable transportation for millions of people around the world for the last 150 years and opened vistas of exploration and fun for generations of children. Currently, great efforts are being made to provide bicycles for AIDS workers in Africa, tsunami survivors in Asia and underprivileged children in the U.S.

Those are big changes- a bicycle ambulance in Zimbabwe can be the difference between life and death. But bicycles can bring small changes to any life lived, anywhere in the world. Riding a bike makes us aware of the weather, demands that we pay attention to all our senses, requires co-operation with others on the road, challenges our understanding of our bodies and pushes our self imposed physical limits.

This blog is about these changes and how even small shifts in perspective that can come from bicycle riding can lead to big changes in how we see the world, how we live in it. Changes in our impact on the earth, or even just noticing how nice it is to have the wind in your hair. Sometimes, all it takes to have you change your career or go back to school or meet your neighbor for the first time, is a good bike ride!

We look forward to sharing our stories, and even more, to hearing yours! Please, please, please send us your bike of change and life stories! Why do you ride? Where has riding taken you? How do you tackle the challenges of where you live to keep riding? Did you meet your spouse on a bike? Did you use one to get away after sneaking out of the house at night? Share your adventure with the rest of us.

Last year my husband and I began an experiment in bike commuting. Morning and after work rides soon became the best part of our days; with coffee stops and evening detours for sushi. My blog records my journey toward a more simple and satisfying life; the "slow" but always well-dressed lifestyle. Alas, my attempts to leave a lighter footprint will no doubt be at odds with my obsession with finding the perfect pair of ballet flats.

I'll be writing about bike camping and touring and talk about some of the things I like. It's not for everybody. You might think some of the stuff is outdated, quaint or over-priced. That's fine too.

This site won't be perfect and I won't be able to tell you everything about everything that's out there and I may get some things wrong on occasion, but I just want to talk about some stuff I've used that I like and would recommend to a good friend.
