I Love Weather - Meteorology is Fascinating!

I'm a bit of a weather junkie. I guess that comes from having grown up a few blocks from the ocean on one of Florida's barrier islands. Weather was always big news during hurricane season, and everyone paid close attention.

When we were kids, we were somewhat eager for a tropical system to come our way, because it meant we'd get a "hurricane day" with no school. But, it didn't take long to learn that no school was a poor trade-off for the anxiety, damage, and heartache a bad storm could bring.

I took this picture as Hurricane Irene was several hundred miles away. But look how the ocean was already stirred up. That wave crashing way out there at the end of the pier is probably a good 15-20 feet high!

I hope that, by publishing a few lenses about hurricanes, severe weather, and related topics, I'll be able to raise someone's awareness. It's just my small effort to educate and help another person - somewhere, sometime - to be prepared.

Living in Hurricane Country

Always be prepared!

type=Hurricane-WindsLiving in paradise has its price. The price we pay for living on the coast of Florida is hurricane season. Each one brings a threat. Sometimes we get lucky, and sometimes we don't.

As a result of growing up in a family that came to Florida over a centry ago, I have an intense interest in tropical systems, and follow every tropical wave that dares to develop during the season. We are keenly aware of what CAN happen, and are puzzled by the general lack of knowledge and careless nonchalance of some people with regard to what Mother Nature can do.

We have great weather here, but we do have fires, but those are mostly caused by man.

What an impressive lens. So much information that I never thought would catch my attention but it sure has. I lived on the Gulf Coast of FL for 27 years and was fortunate not to have any Hurricanes, although a few big storms related to them came through. Good job here. BTW, I used to take FL seniors on cruises when I lived there. Can you send me links to some or your cruise sites and forums? Thanks.
