Crystals, rocks & minerals

This lens celebrates the science of crystals, rocks and minerals.

Here I plan to collect and organize geology links, books, videos, pictures and more -- whatever I find most interesting, educational and useful in my science writing.

I will do my best to cover many facets of rock, the oldest realm of existence on the planet Earth. This is too large a topic for one lens overview, so I may build and link together more lenses about specific rocks, crystals and minerals (or not).

This lens complements my alternative and complementary medicine rock and crystal garden lens and relates to my earth sciences lens.

When I was a child my dad and mom liked to say I had rocks in my head. To this day, I feel like I have rocks all over and I like it.

I refer often to the Wikipedia articles about many geology topics, because they link to reliable source references and resources.

Crystals, rocks & minerals...a deep, vast subject

The Fabled Viking Sunstone
The fabled Viking sunstone, also known as Viking compass. How might it have worked and could it have been calcite or iolite?
Viking navigation
Is the legend of the viking sunstone true?.
Viking navigation hypothesis under foggy and cloudy skies requires more light
While history portrays the Vikings as skillful masters of the sea, sailing treacherous routes in the northern Atlantic Ocean during the 10th-13th centuries, just how much knowledge, technology and ability they possessed is debatable. One theory claims that the Vikings could navigate even on cloudy or foggy days using skylight polarization, which would not only require specific atmospheric conditions, but technology beyond anything known in Viking culture.
Vikings could have steered by polarized light
(PhysOrg.com) -- The Vikings are said to have been able to navigate with the aid of 'sunstones' that allowed them to see the sun on cloudy or foggy days. Now scientists in Hungary and Sweden say the sunstones could have been polarizing crystals.
