This was crucial! I am off to beautify my own lenses - maybe even all of them, as I doubt I'd be able to stop once I get the hang of CSS. Great lens.

You explain things simply which is not an easy thing to do for many. I like that and your lens too. Question: How do I make a image border say 15px wide. I want to insert my text into an image border of baby bottles.

Thank you DrRichard for this most helpful page.
I shall certainly be making use of the techniques you discuss, and will link from my relevant lenses.
I'm new to Squidoo, but not to Web development. Though the visual work has always been done by others I've been aware of the technology and the Zen of CSS.
    A question:
Is there documentation of the CSS scheme used by Squidoo main themes?
I'm thinking that knowing more about this might help in tweakinng CSS in a way that is congruent with the existing scheme.
My first experiments have just been using style for para blocks in my text modules.
    A plug:
In your list of image-editing tools you don't mention the Gimp. This Open Source image editor is a free, powerful, alternative. It is in constant active development, is very well documented and supported by an lively community. Although native to Gnu/ Linux( the Gnu Image Manipulation Program), there are versions for most machines and Operating Systems. I hope you and readers may be interested in my Gnuspeak lens which aims to provide resources for those interested in the use of Free, Open Source software( FOSS/ FLOSS ). The Gimp is closely to the Gnome project which provides a free desktop environment, capable of stunning ergonominc and visula effects. Gnomeshell, which is forthcoming, takes things to the next level with a fresh take on desktop navigation and functionality. It deploys seamlessly across the widest range of devices from phones and handhelds, through tablets and netbooks, to the most powerful laptops and work stations, making it attractive both for users - who can enjoy a unified environment across their devices, and for lazy programmers who want their work to have the widest application possible( cf. Moblin( not my lens)  and Meego( my lens).
    Another( hopefully helpful) plug:
I hope you and readers may be interested in my lenses Squidoo Hotlinking- the beginnings of a template system for creating useful chunks of HTML/CSS for use on Squidoo and elsewhere, and Snippets- a collection of code fragments and links to resources. The content will be expanding over coming months as I document the development I am undertaking. There is so far a simple script( in perl) to make quoting HTML/CSS code easier, with a view to enhanced sharing of useful techniques, which I hope may be of particular interest to lensmasters.
Both these will soon have CGI form frontends.
    Thanks again,
    Best regards,
    Pete.

Thanks for the great samples of code in one place. CSS backgrounds work great at Zazzle too - the stores really stand out from the competition with a wide background. You can modify and validate the base css code for your store (in beta from at least Dec. 2010) using the same background: URL statement as your code snippets on this page.

Those are great tips for those CSS enthusiasts! There are many networking sites that have a Custom CSS option. These tips you've given are very useful for those who want to add a little style to their sites. Thanks for sharing these tips, by the way. I've been inspired to make my own website design. Those guys from that San Diego web design firm are really good! Their designs are so awesome, that it made me want to study how to make my own. That web design firm San Diego has really does a good job in making their clients' sites appealing to the visitors' eyes.

  • ChapelHillFiddler Jun 20, 2009 @ 2:02 pm | in reply to DrRichard | delete
Hi, thanks so much for your info! I actually tried that already, but the hacking I had to do made me quite uneasy. I've reproduced it at http://www.squidoo.com/wedding-cake-in-nc. It's the lemon in the middle of the page. And while I was at it, just below the lemon it says "interim conclusion" (if you search for that you'll find the lemon directly above) and I wish wish I could extend, for instance, the gray background past the text below, but as soon as I hit return it delivers a close-paragraph and the gray is over. Anything I can do?

This is an unrelated question but perhaps you can tell me where to find the answer: I have a draft at http://www.squidoo.com/lensmaster/new_workshop/my-donkey. I have seen lenses where there is a large picture at the very beginning of the introduction. How do I do that?

Wowza you are so good to help us.
  • DrRichard Jun 20, 2009 @ 1:08 pm | in reply to ChapelHillFiddler | delete
Hi Fiddler - the best way to do this is to add a large amount of padding to the paragraph so that the space around the text extends over the background. Use the CSS padding statement that I've shown examples of here. If you're still stuck, contact me directly and show me the code and I'll take a look!
  • ChapelHillFiddler Jun 20, 2009 @ 11:41 am | delete
Thank you so much for giving me five stars! Now I have a question: can I get a background image, or even a background-color, to extend beyond the paragraph that called it? I wanted to put a ul over a background with an intro paragraph but no go. You rock!
