The most magnificent beaches in Cuba

The finest beaches in the world

With coastlines that stretch a massive 5746 kilometres and over 289 beaches, it's no wonder Cuba is renowned for its sand and seas. In an island with so many sandy pockets of paradise, which should you take special care to go and visit? Here are my top 5...

My Top 5 Cuba Beaches

(...in no particular order...)

  • Cayo Largo
  • Cayo Santa Maria
  • Playa Ancon
  • Playa Santa Lucia
  • Cayo Levisa

The 5 beaches in question...

...drumroll...

Cayo Largo

This beach is found on the east side of the island, and is a hugely popular dive site. The best thing about it is its distance from the other tourists, as it takes a six hour boat trip to get there from Havana!

There's hardly any tourist traffic here - hardly any commercial shops or restautants: just you, the sun, sea and sand.

Cayo Santa Maria

This one's a UNESCO reserve, which pretty much guarantees you're in for a treat. It's actually a slight cheat of me, because it's an island rather than a beach, but with 7 miles of virtually untouched white sands I think it counts!

It's particuarly great for nature lovers - flamingo, seagulls and tocoroco seem to love the island almost as much as I do. In face there are 10 endemic species to be found here, making it very much the top beach for animal lovers.

Playa Ancon

Another island, but Playa Ancon accounts for 6 miles of soft white sand bordered by gentle clear blue waters. The water itself is calm and virtually wave free, making it safe for small children.

For those who find the idea of just lying on a beach all day unappealing (I think this lens may not be for you), there is an excellent coral reef perfect for scuba diving and snorkelling just a few hundred metres from the shore.

Playa Santa Lucia

This beach is a whopping 13 miles long, and the enormous coral reef a mile from the coast makes the waters tranquil and calming. Although this is quite a popular beach, its length ensures that you are never competing too hard for space.

It's real appeal though is for divers, who will find a massive 500 species of tropical fish, 50 varieties of coral and more than 25 sunken ships to explore. It's very much the divers' choice of the island so if that's your bag, then don't miss out.

Cayo Levisa

Okay, so I'm cheating more by naming another island - though this one's only a 20 minute boat ride away, so I think it counts. Cayo Levisa is covered with tropical jungle, bordered by fine white sandy beaches. The scenery of the beach makes this a great choice for those who value great aesthetics and beauty.

It's actually very quiet, too, with very little entertainment for tourists. Although it's perfect for fishing, diving and sailing, what Cayo Levisa is made for is reclining in the sunshine.

Amazon doesn't have a great deal on Cuban beaches, nonetheless:
