Theatre Group celebrates their 10th Anniversary Year 2008
The Cuckoo's Nest Theatre Company based in Kidderminster was formed by Judith Farrar in 1998.
Judith has a lifelong passion for the Arts, having been a member herself of various Theatre Companies and taking part as a community cast member for Birmingham Opera Company. Judith saw the way creativity had a role in the healing process, and to compliment her work as a qualified Social Worker decided to develop her skills and become a Drama Therapist. The scripts are adapted and devised by the company with Judith writing them and directing the performances.
The group was an extension of Healing Arts Unlimited, which offered a whole range of Arts and Craft work for mental health, and which valued the role creativity can play in good health and the healing process.
From the start the group had two main artistic aims. The first was to produce interesting and exciting theatre pieces through improvisation and devised work, working towards the highest standards of performance. The secondary aim was to reach groups of marginalised people who are often excluded from mainstream Arts activities because of disability, age, social stigma and particularly mental health difficulties.
The aims on the mental health front were to provide the opportunity for adults experiencing mental ill health to work creatively together as a team towards a common goal; to increase personal confidence and self esteem, and for members to find their place in the community as people of equal worth.
These aims remain the driving force of the Company today. Many members have moved on to Further and Higher Education, voluntary and paid employment, and participation in other community arts groups.
Five members have performed as part of the community cast for Birmingham Opera Company. In 2007 the Company performed at the International Mask Festival in Stourbridge.

LARK RISE by Flora Thompson
Adapted, Devised and Performed by The Cuckoo's Nest Theatre Company
The action of the play takes place in the Village of Lark Rise during the 1880s.
Each Performances lasted about an hour, although the time flew by and seemed like 10 minutes. Split into 9 scenes, the action seamlessly rolled together, each scene connecting nicely to the previous ones, and leading up to the wonderful Harvest Festival final scene.
One of the most exciting features of the whole piece was the way the audience was there to view the performance yet was encouraged and empowered by the cast to participate and become one with the company and performance.
The humour in the play had everyone in the audience laughing, the humour often covered topics of a serious nature but in a way that was made bearable by adding a touch of humour without distracting from the serious subject at its heart. There were many very touching moments about the hard times people of that era lived through. The names of young boys shown in earlier scenes working hard to survive in the poverty of working on the land, were called out in a roll call of names of those who had died in the First World War. A touching scene which brought tears to the eye of many of the audience.
It was hard to believe this was an amateur production. The acting, dancing and singing was at a very high standard. Scenes were changed quickly and without any break or interuption to the performance, actors engaged the audience and held them spellbound.
The costumes were amazing, special thanks were given to Bett Martindale and to the local Rose Theatre for making and loaning individual costumes. They really set the scene for that period of time, and together with the whole room being painted with scenes from the actual village of Lark Rise, you got lost in the performance and felt you were back in time and sitting in a small rural village.
Scenery Painting on the Wall
The Witches Cat!
The whole room incredibly became Lark Rise over a period of several weeks, with painting happening many days of each week, and weekends, any time the venue and the painters were available!
The result is this incredible scenery painting.
My personal favorite, the cat in the 'witching' tree, painted on moveable screens not the walls. I will tell more about the Which a little later!

- Thank you for asking. Sadly the Church committee decided to paint over them, with magnolia emulsion I believe.

- The movable scenery, 3 large pieces the size of the cat in the tree, was kindly loaned by Kurt and Andrea Sinclair-Hall, of Carlton Promotions in Stourport on Severn. The walls are in a Church Hall, and we are awaiting the decision of the Church if they will keep the art work or paint over it.
