Edward's Shiny Silver Volvo & More!

You'd better put your seatbelt on because these vampires like to drive fast! It's true that the Cullen's try to 'blend in' to the small town of Forks, Washington, but when it comes to their cars, it's hard to hide their need for speed.

In Twilight, the modern day love story of forbidden love with a fairy tale ending, Edward Cullen is the knight in shining armor, so to speak. Every handsome prince (bloodthirsty vampire hero) needs a trusty steed (shiny silver Volvo) to rescue the damsel in distress (fragile little human). Ahh, the infamous shiny silver Volvo. *sigh* Don't get me wrong, I'm not usually a "car person". Like Bella, I don't know a M3 from any other flashy convertible in the lot, but I have to admit that my heart skips a beat for that shiny silver Volvo when it skids in for the rescue in Port Angeles.

This is a tribute to the fast cars in the Twilight movies and books... Edward's Volvo C30, his "special occasion car", the Aston Martin Vanquish, Bella's "after car", the red Ferrari, the fictional Guardian, Alice's Yellow Porsche, Emmett's Jeep, Rosalie's red convertible and Carlisle's Mercedes. Plus, Bella's old Chevy pickup truck gets an honorable mention in spite of it's rust and intolerably slow speed.

Warning: Book and movie spoilers below!

Twilight is a romantic-fantasy film directed by Catherine Hardwicke and based on the novel of the same name by Stephenie Meyer. It focuses on the development of a personal relationship between human teenager Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), and the subsequent efforts of Cullen and his family to keep Swan safe from a separate group of hostile vampires.

The project was in development for approximately three years at Paramount Pictures, during which time a screen adaptation which differed significantly from the novel was written. Summit Entertainment acquired the rights to the novel after three years of the project's stagnant development. Melissa Rosenberg wrote a new adaptation of the novel shortly before the 2007?2008 Writers Guild of America strike and sought to be faithful to the novel's storyline. The film was primarily shot in Washington and Oregon in early 2008.

Twilight was released in theaters on November 21, 2008, and grossed US$35.7 million on its opening day. As of September 19, 2009, the film has grossed US$383,520,177 in worldwide box office and, as of July 12, 2009, $157,078,128 in North American DVD sales. The soundtrack was released on November 4, 2008. New Moon and Eclipse, the next two books in the series, were produced as films the following year.

Twilight Cars - The Book VS The Movie

There are some slight differences between the books and the movies.

  • In the book, Edward has a silver Volvo S60R, in the movie, he drives a Volvo C30 Coupe.
  • In the book, Bella drives a red 1953 Chevrolet pickup truck, in the movie, it's a 1963 Chevy C-10.
  • In the book, Emmett's Jeep is red, in the movie, it's silver/white.
  • In the book, Rosalie drives a red BMW M3, in the movie, she drives a Mercedes.

Twilight is a series of four vampire-based fantasy romance novels by American author Stephenie Meyer. It charts a period in the life of Isabella "Bella" Swan, a teenage girl who moves to Forks, Washington, and falls in love with a 104-year-old vampire named Edward Cullen. The series is told primarily from Bella's point of view, with the epilogue of Eclipse and Part II of Breaking Dawn being told from the viewpoint of character Jacob Black, a werewolf. The unpublished Midnight Sun is a retelling of the first book, Twilight, from Edward Cullen's point of view.

Ever since the release of the first novel, Twilight, in 2005, the books have gained immense popularity and commercial success around the world. The series is most popular among young adults; the four books have won multiple awards, most notably the 2008 British Book Award for "Children's Book of the Year" for Breaking Dawn, while the series as a whole won the 2009 Kids' Choice Award for Favorite Book.

As of November 2009, the series has sold over 85 million copies worldwide with translations into at least 38 different languages around the globe. The four Twilight books have consecutively set records as the biggest selling novels of 2008 on the USA Today Best-Selling Books list and have spent over 235 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller list for Children's Series Books.

Thus far, the first three books are being made into a series of motion pictures by Summit Entertainment; the film adaptation of Twilight was released in 2008 and the second, Category: The Twilight Saga: New Moon - , was released on November 20, 2009. The third film, Category: The Twilight Saga: Eclipse - , is set to be released June 30, 2010.

Bella's Pickup Truck

In the book, Bella drives a red 1953 Chevrolet pickup truck, in the movie, it's a 1963 Chevy C-10.

The truck was a welcoming gift from Charlie, Bella's dad, when she moved to Forks to live with him. He bought the truck from longtime family friend, Billy Black. Bella immediately loved it! (When you're an extremely uncoordinated human you need a car that has a nice strong build and feels safe.)

"I could walk home faster than this truck moves."
Edward Cullen, Twilight, Chapter 17, p.348

The Guardian

Based on the Mercedes Benz S600 Guard

The virtually indestructible Guardian was a gift to Bella from Edward in hopes that it would keep her safe after her truck mysteriously died, probably of unnatural causes since Edward was anxious to see it go. She drives the Guardian in the beginning of Breaking Dawn, but is completely unaware of what the car is capable of protecting her from until a couple of enthusiastic tourists start drooling over it while she is pumping gas. Imagine her embarrassment when she realizes that the joke is on her. Edward actually thought she needed a tank-resistant car to keep her safe?!

How Do Small Town Vampires Afford Nice Cars?

In Twilight, the Cullen's like to indulge in high performance, luxury cars that obviously set them apart from the other residents of the small town of Forks, Washington. Being vampires, they usually try to fit it rather than draw attention to themselves, but driving a fast car is an exception to the rule. Money means nothing to Edward Cullen and his family. When you never sleep, money just seems to accumulate over the years and Edward's sister, Alice has a gift that allows her to see the future which makes it easy to predict trends in the stock market.
