World Sport Stacking Champion is a Ten Year Old Pinoy

I saw this cup stacking competition around year 2004-2005 on a video clip in the internet. It was very fascinating to see the cups suddenly come alive at the hands of the contestants. It seemed to me at first a silly game. But silly or not silly... my co programmers went to the company canteen and secretly swiped 4 cups each. Oh we had a grand time having a our mini competitions. I ended up loosing my microsoft mouse and diablo installation to one of them.

It was a novelty and soon other interests to fill up the otherwise boring graveyard shifts. I think this was also the year when Squidoo started. Hmmmpf... I wish I started squidooing that year... but well... Anyway my interest in this "cool" game was revived when a 10 year old Pinoy (our slang for Filipino) became the world champion. He performed in ESPN... and My how this sport stacking has grown.

So this here lens is for the Speed Stacking sport currently making waves in the Philippines and to Steven Purugganan my kababayan (countrymen).

Sport Stacking, speed stacking or cup stacking orginated in Denver. It involves the perfect coordination of the eye and hand movements to stack 12 plastic cups in pre-determined sequences, e.g pyramids of 3-3-3 or 3-6-3, in the dastest time humanly possible. First time viewers would think that video clip is on fast forward mode. Those who actually witness it would only see a blur and the cups taking a life of their own.

Steven Purugganan and his brothers got hooked with the sport after watching a replay of the 2006 World Sport Stacking Championships on ESPN. They started the sport using only regular cups and competing with each other. Their parents Dan and Marivic fully supported their boys
by buying each of them a SpeedStack Speed Stacking kit complete with matts and timers.

"Using just regular plastic cups at home and watching the ESPN recording over and over again, they taught themselves how to up-stack and down-stack the 12 cups in the predetermined sequences. The learning process was fun and a test in eye-hand coordination - a welcome alternative to their usual pastimes of playing video games, swimming, baseball, basketball, soccer. They would literally spend hours trying to get faster, either racing against their own times, or against each other." " explained Marivic in an e-mail to The STAR (one of the top newpaper in the Philippines - Bill Velasco).

The brothers joined 2007 World Sport Stacking Championships in Denver and impressed everybody by their exceptional time. But it was Steven that broke the world record of the Germany Kid. The world record currently is with Steven. And only the German kid can beat him. So the world record is passed between the two of them. The Purugganan brothers are all in the World's top 10 Sport Stacking players.

Because of Steven, sport stacking is gaining popularity in the Philippines gaining more and more players each day. The Philippine Sports Stacking National Tournament 2008 has just begun.
