Being told you're infertile is devastating for a woman at any age.  There are so many women who so desperately want to have a child yet for one reason or another, pregnancy eludes them. But, as the saying goes, "If there's a will, there's a way."

If you or someone you love is struggling to bring a child into this world, this may be one of the most important things you will ever read. Why? Because it will provide you with hope when all hope may seem lost. Don't give up. Raising a baby is the most awesome responsibility a parent has and if you're trying everything in your power to conceive, then the odds are you are going to be a fantastic parent. So again, do not give up hope.

You Are Not Alone

Though it may seem as if no one can relate, many women are in the same situation

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, ten percent of women need help getting pregnant. This is about 6.1 million women who are looking for treatments for infertility. Before you set out looking for treatment options, you should first look into the cause of your difficulties getting pregnant.

The Office on Women's Health state that in most cases, the cause of female infertility is due to a problem with ovulation. A woman's body must release an egg from one of her ovaries but in most cases of women needing help with getting pregnant, this is where the problem lies. Irregular menstrual cycles or no menstrual cycles are common signs that your are not ovulating normally.

Ovulation difficulties are often caused by a condition called "polycystic ovarian syndrome" or PCOS (Office on Women's Health). PCOS is essentially a hormone imbalance that causes ovulation to be irregular. This is the most common cause of female infertility. Another common problem the Office on Women's Health cites is primary ovarian insufficiency or POI. This occurs when the woman's ovaries just stops working normally before the age of 40. A note: POI is different than early menopause.

Possible Solutions?

There are some things in your power that can change the odds

Despite what the dire statistics state, despite the conventional wisdom, and despite any reservations you or others may have, you can get pregnant even after the age of 40. No, this is not done by magic or wishful thinking. You can get pregnant easier and faster even if you have been trying for a while. Here is the secret: reduce your exposure to cigarette smoke and change your diet!

That is all there is to it. The journal "Fertility and Sterility" has a published study where doctors found that men who stopped smoking showed a rise in sperm count of up to 800 percent. According to Margareta D. Pisarska, MD, co-director of Center for Reproductive Medicine at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and editor-in-chief of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine News, smokers undergoing fertility treatments usually require much higher doses of fertility medication than non-smokers.

However, it is not just smokers that can negatively affect your fertility. It can also be affected by just being around smokers. A recent study in "Human Reproduction" showed that second-hand smoke reduced the pregnancy rates in women going through fertility treatments.

Just because you and/or your partner quit smoking or you avoid those that do, other lifestyle choices can be a factor in getting pregnant. Another factor besides smoking is the foods you eat. New research being published in medical journals focuses on the link between diet and fertility. In fact, these studies indicate that infertile people/couples lack important nutrients in their diet. One study in "OBGYN News" is research done by a group of Harvard researchers. What they found is that in 79 percent of infertile couples consumed lower amounts of foods high in antioxidants when compared to couples deemed as "fertile." Antioxidants are found in fruits and vegetables. This is especially important to note as previous studies have shown that there is a link between vitamins C and E and male fertility.

Don't Give Up Hope

There is no reason why you can't get pregnant

Though the statistics may not be in your favor, it is also not out of the realm of possibilities for you and/or your partner to get pregnant as thousands of women experience the joy of giving birth to healthy, beautiful babies. Getting pregnant is possible and many women have successfully brought a baby into this world.
