DIFFICULTIES WITH DOG WETTING

Dog and puppy wetting has got to be one of the most frustrating of all bad behaviors that you will experience with a new dog.

  • It causes that smell that you just can't seem to get rid of.

  • It's unhealthy, which can create a real problem for homes with small children and adults alike.

  • Not to mention it can be a real cause for much embarrassment as well.

PUPPY WETTING BASICS

Really.... it's not that confusing!

If you have a new puppy and you are struggling to get his dog wetting under control, here are some basics to keep in mind:

PUPPIES NEED SEVERAL POTTY BREAKS A DAY

  • 2 Months = every 2 hours

  • 3 Months = every 4 hours

  • 4 Months = every 5 hours

  • 5 Months = every 6 hours

  • 6 Months = every 7 hours

  • 7 Months = every 8 hours

PUPPY PADS...SCIENCE OR SCIENCE FICTION

YOU DECIDE.....

When it comes to using potty pads as a training tool for puppies, pet owners are divided.

THOSE IN FAVOR SAY:

  • They work great for transitioning a new puppy. By getting the puppy to potty on the pads, located through out the house, then slowly moving them towards the outside door. The idea is that the pads are closer and quicker to get to than the door. Kinda like the toddler who waits until the last minute and begins the famous potty dance.

  • It is less work for the owner because they don't have to be constantly watching the puppy. It will also be helpful for the "around the clock" trips outside during the early months.

  • A greater number of dog owners find themselves living in apartment complexes or high rise tenant buildings. This makes it very difficult for that quick dash outside when puppy starts sniffing around.

THOSE NOT IN FAVOR SAY:

  • They just don't work, In many cases this is true. You must keep in mind, the many different breeds and personalities of those breeds. What works for one dog doesn't mean it will work for another.

  • Why train the puppy twice? First you teach him that it's OK to potty inside and than you tell him he needs to go outside. This sends mixed messages and only confuses your pet and frustrates you.

  • Potty pads can get very expensive, especially with a new puppy. It doesn't seem worth the money or the effort.

MY PERSONAL CASE STUDY?

YOU GOT IT

  1. Shel tie. Smartest dog ever (my opinion). She didn't need potty pads at all. She took to going outdoors, like a fish to water.

  2. Pit Bull. Potty pads....bad idea. She tore them to shreds and actually ate them.

  3. Dachshund. Didn't have a clue what to do with the potty pad. Instead of wetting on them, she slept on them. Not the smartest dog but she sure is a cutie.

So there you have it! Bottom line is, pads or no pads, you have to decide what works best for your situation. If you do go with pads, I suggest you start small because pads can get expensive, especially if they don't work.

A few good tips:

1.
We found that in order to keep the pads in place, a little double sided tape can work wonders. Another good solution is to put the pad in a litter box, this will keep it in place, as well as make clean up easier.

2. Never strike your dog for wetting in the house. This will only cause more stress on your dog and create even more behavior problems. A stern voice and a pointed finger toward your pet will get the message across loud and clear.

3. Only discipline your dog when you catch him in the act. If you discipline him after the fact, he wont know what he did wrong. Sometimes they might look guilty but most likely they are just cowering to the "Alpha Dog"...YOU!

A wetting pet can be a real nightmare, but with a little effort and determination you can wake up from this bad dream. A well behaved dog can be found in every dog, all you need to do is bring it out. Be patient... the puppy phase is just that, a phase.
