Causes of Bad Breath

what makes your mouth smell

Bad BreathWhat Causes Bad Breath? Bad breath is generally caused by the bacterias in the mouth and especially on the tongue. Bacterias thrive in the mouth when there are food particles left on the teeth, tongue and gums and start to multiply and causes foul smell. The result of bad breath can be linked to the food we eat, poor dental hygiene, tobacco usage, alcohol consumption and certain medical conditions.

Food. Usually the main cause of bad breath is bacteria feeding off of food particles that are caught between your teeth. The bacterias causes releases chemicals and gas that causes bad breath in your mouth.

Poor dental hygiene. It is very important that you follow a good practice of dental hygiene. Daily brushing and flossing is a must to remove food particles and plaque that are the cause of bad breath. It is advisable that you should thoroughly brush your teeth and clean your tongues and gums atleast twice a day.

Tobacco use. Smoking not only causes cancer, respiratory problems and other serious medical conditions, but they are are also the main culprit for chronic bad breath because of nicotine and tar build up in the mouth and obstructing the flow of saliva to further cause dry mouth and foul breath.

Medical conditions. Several medical conditions can also cause bad breath. Some medical conditions that cause bad breath include diabetes, chronic bronchitis, post nasal drip, respiratory tract infections and kidney diseases.

what you can do to avoid bad breath

It is estimated that one out of every four people suffer from halitosis. If you have bad breath, you should seriously consider treating this problem as it affects how people perceive and interact with you.

Here are a few pointers that will help you cure and prevent your bad breath problems:

=> Observe good dental hygiene practice - Regular brushing and flossing of your teeth and cleaning the gums and tongue is imperative. If you can't brush after every meal, you should atleast brush your teeth every morning and evening.

=> Quit smoking - Smoking tobacco causes nicotine and tar to build up on the surface of your teeth and gums and this is one of the cause of bad breath. Smoking also prohibits the proper flow of saliva and causes dry mouth and foul breath.

=> Refrain from consuming alcohol - Alcohol is another cause of bad breath. Alcohol also dries the mouth and allows bacterias to multiply and thrive on leftovers found in your mouth.

=> Visit the dentist - Your dentist can properly help you remove plaque and nicotine buildup in your mouth and thus remove bad breath caused by these substances. If your bad breath is caused by tooth decay, then your dentist can also help remove the teeth.

I discovered something else that can cause bad breath that my sister deals with from time to time, tonsil stones. I think a lot of people have them and don't know what they are and they not only cause a bad breath but a bad taste. Good information for a fresh breath.
