What Are Panic Attacks?

The Onset Of A Panic Attack And What Can Happen

Panic attacks are sudden periods of intense anxiety supported by severe physical discomfort. (symptoms listed below) The onset of these episodes can often be very sudden, and may have no obvious triggers. Although these episodes may appear random, they are a subset of an evolutionary response commonly referred to as fight or flight that occur out of context.

This response floods the body with hormones, particularly epinephrine (adrenaline), that aid it in defending against harm. Experiencing a panic attack is said to be one of the most intensely frightening, upsetting and uncomfortable experiences of a person's life. According to the American Psychological Association the symptoms of a panic attack commonly last approximately thirty minutes. However, panic attacks can be as short as 15 seconds, while sometimes panic attacks may form a cyclic series of episodes, lasting for an extended period, sometimes hours. Often those afflicted will experience significant anticipatory anxiety and limited symptom attacks in between attacks, in situations where attacks have previously occurred. (wikipedia)

How Do I Cure Panic Attacks?

There are a variety of options that will help you cure panic attacks ranging from medication, an holistic approach using techniques such as deep breathing and yoga, cognitive behavioral therapy to programs such as the Anxiety Release Method.

Medication

Clearly you should seek professional medical advice but medication works for some and not for others. Results are varied. You have do go through the process of getting the dosage right. The effect might wear off on time. You have to decide how long you want to stay on the medication.

Yoga and the holistic approach

I have been on medication and it has certainly helped. However, I have found yoga and breathing techniques that go with it very beneficial. The process has calmed me down greatly and the meditative side of yoga has helped me get life into perspective. I think it helps as an addition to something more specific to curing your panic attacks.

C.B.T.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or CBT as it is known, is a general term used to classify a variety of similar therapies. Cognitive-behavioral therapy is based on the idea that our thoughts cause our feelings and behaviors, not external things, like people, situations, and events. The benefit of this fact is that we can change the way we think to feel / act better even if the situation does not change. You can achieve rapid results and can also carry on self-counseling when your sessions end. I have found CBT very helpful also.

I have covered three options and I have done them all. My view from my personal experience is that they have melded together very well for me to achieve great results in stopping my panic attacks. There are however other considerations.

Cost

The cost of the options can be prohibitive. I am fortunate that I received the CBT without charge, the yoga I do at home and the medication I was taking was mostly subsidised. I fully understand if this is beyond most people.

Time

I am self employed so I was able to take time out when I needed to. Because of this I was able to be more patient than most for results. I also have a very supportive family, experienced in therapy. This again is a situation that not many people have. The experience of therapy that is!

Firstly, Don't Get In A Panic!
There are other options available. Whilst browsing online looking for potential solutions one site came up repeatedly. STOP MY PANIC I was amazed at the amount of testimonials the owner, Joe Barry has received from ecstatic buyers. The technique discussed is simple to implement, does not take up a load of time, involves no medication and can be done anytime, any place.

The Anxiety Release Method is based on the One Move Technique. Basically you learn to stop fearing another panic attack.
