Different Cures For Sinus Problems

After a diagnosis is made, a doctor may prescribe a treatment which attempts to reduce inflammation, thus relieving the symptoms.

The aim of treatment is to re-establish drainage of the nasal passages and reducing and controlling the inflammation. Pain relief is also a big consideration. Doctors often recommend antibiotics as cures for sinus problems but these are only suitable for bacterial infections, and many people find that if given repeatedly, their effectiveness diminishes with each prescription.

Many over the counter treatments are also available in the form of decongestant sprays and nose drops. However, there is a danger from using these for more than just a few days as they can lead to even more congestion and swelling of the membranes.

Steroid nasal sprays are sometimes prescribed and these can help reduce swelling, congestion and inflammation.

Sometimes one-off sinus problems will resolve themselves but problems occur for sufferers who have repeated attacks for which there is often no obvious remedy.

Simple home treatments include steam inhalation therapy, saline nasal sprays and warm compresses placed directly on the face.

As a last resort, surgery may be recommended to treat chronic sinusitis and this can sometimes have excellent results. The most common form of surgery will widen the natural openings of the sinuses to allow better drainage.

What Is Sinusitis?

Sinusitis means "inflammation of the sinuses".

The sinuses are air-filled spaces found in the bones of the head and face. There are 4 pairs of sinuses and these are located on either side of the nose in the cheeks, behind and between the eyes, in the forehead and behind the nasal cavity.

The sinuses have a lining of mucous membrane and this is what becomes inflamed and infected causing sinusitis.

Air and mucous are normally freely exchanged between the sinuses and nose and this all has a continuous mucous membrane lining. Anything which causes a swelling in the nose can also affect the mucous membranes within the sinuses.

When air and pus become trapped in the sinuses, this can cause immense pressure on the sinus wall, leading to the intense pain of a sinus attack.

Symptoms of Sinusitis

The pain from sinusitis varies depending on which sinus is affected. One characteristic of sinusitis is a headache upon wakening plus pain when the forehead is touched. Some sufferers experience terrible toothache and pain in the cheeks and upper jaw. For others, tenderness in the corners of the eyes and swelling of the eyelids is a common symptom along with the loss of the sense of smell. Some people also suffer from earaches and neck pain. Often many people take pain killers as cures for sinus problems but what they do is simply help give symptomatic relief.

Other less specific symptoms include fever, weakness, a cough and runny nose and/or nasal congestion.

Causes Of Sinusitis

The majority of cases of sinusitis are preceded by viral induced common colds. These colds can cause the sinuses to become inflamed. Often both the cold and the inflammation of the sinuses will disappear within a week or two and no cures for sinus problems are necessary.

Occasionally, a fungal infection can be responsible for sinusitis. Fungus is naturally present in the modern day world and our bodies have natural resistance to them. However, for people with a lowered immune system, this fungus may cause illness as the sufferer experiences an allergic reaction.

Any chronic inflammation of the nasal passages can lead to sinusitis. One of the common causes of this is hay fever. Other causes can be as simple as cold air, alcohol, perfumes, altered humidity.

Acute Sinusitis

This is often a "one-off" infection often following a common cold and can potentially affect almost anyone. However, it is more common in certain groups of patients, such as those with reduced immune systems and those with an abnormality of mucous secretion/function (such as cystic fibrosis).

Chronic Sinusitis

Chronic sinusitis is when the sinus inflammation has continued for at least 3 weeks and can sometimes become an almost permanent feature of a person's life.

As with acute sinusitis, people with allergies are often more prone to this condition, along with asthmatics. The breathing in of airborne allergens including dust, mold and pollen can often set off an allergic reaction which can then lead to sinusitis. Damp weather and air pollutants can also contribute.

This is also a condition more likely in people who have immune deficiencies or abnormalities of mucous secretion.
