Hockey may be Canada's game, but curling is Canada's life.

The game of curling was invented in Scotland. The game of curling was already in existence in Scotland in the early sixteenth century as evidenced by a curling stone inscribed with the date 1511, uncovered along with another bearing the date 1551, when an old pond was drained at Dunblane, Scotland.
Scottish immigrants introduced curling to Canada where it thrived and attained a level of excellence that remains unsurpassed. Canada currently has an estimated 1,000,000 curlers and is generally considered the dominating force both in innovations to the sport and in competitive curling success. I have in the spotlight a Canadian women curler - Sandra Schmirler. In view of the fact that March is "Women's Month" ('Women's Month' which is the period between March 8 and April 7.)

It is estimated there are more than 1.2 million curlers worldwide. While as many as 90 per cent are registered in Canada.

Curling is a complex and maddeningly difficult game to perfect, and the competition can be ruthless. Its not surprising that competitive curling attracts larger and larger crowds every year.

You'll be mesmerized as the tales of ice being furiously swept and wood gliding across it are told with a never-before-achieved drama.

The Life and Times of Sandra Schmirler
Schmirler's team defined the sport of women's curling for most of the 1990s and was also the first ever to win a gold medal in curling in Canada. Between 1991 and 1997, Schmirler skipped her Regina team to three Canadian and World titles - something that had never been done before. She topped that off by leading her team to the first-ever Olympic gold medal in women's curling in the 1998 Games in Nagano, Japan.

Curling defined

Curling is a team sport with similarities to bowls and shuffleboard, played by two teams of four players each on a rectangular sheet of carefully prepared ice. Teams take turns sliding heavy, polished granite stones down the ice towards the target (called the house). Two sweepers with brooms accompany each rock and use timing equipment and their best judgment, along with direction from their teammates, to help direct the stones to their resting place. The complex nature of stone placement and shot selection has led some to refer to curling as "chess on ice."[http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/olympics/2006/writers/02/10/curling.good/index.html SI.com ? 2006 Winter Olympics ? Nice job on this lense. For someone who only knows the bare minimum about the sport of curling, this was very informative. Why am I NOT surprised the Scots invented this? Think about the caber toss, the putting the stone and their influence on the modern game of golf, this fits in just fine with that track record.
