Hockey may be Canada's game, but curling is Canada's life.

The game of curling was invented in Scotland. The game of curling was already in existence in Scotland in the early sixteenth century as evidenced by a curling stone inscribed with the date 1511, uncovered along with another bearing the date 1551, when an old pond was drained at Dunblane, Scotland.
Scottish immigrants introduced curling to Canada where it thrived and attained a level of excellence that remains unsurpassed. Canada currently has an estimated 1,000,000 curlers and is generally considered the dominating force both in innovations to the sport and in competitive curling success. I have in the spotlight a Canadian women curler - Sandra Schmirler. In view of the fact that March is "Women's Month" ('Women's Month' which is the period between March 8 and April 7.)

Are you ready for the 2010 Winter Olympics? Curling will be an exciting event.

Curling at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games

Curling at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games
Curling for men was played at the first Olympic Winter Games at Chamonix, France, in 1924, but curling did not appear again as an official Olympic sport until the Nagano 1998 Winter Games with both men's and women's tournaments.

Olympic curling events will take place in the Vancouver Olympic/Paralympic Centre, located in the geographic center of Vancouver, near Queen Elizabeth Park and with views of the mountains. Construction of the 6,000-spectator venue began in March 2007.
Curling at the 2010 Winter Olympics explained
For only the fifth time in Olympic history curling will be an official event during the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. Curling made its debut in the 1924 winter games and then not again until the 1998 games followed by 2002 and then again in 2006. The qualification for the Vancouver Olympics is based on how teams performed during the 2007, 2008 and 2009 World Curling Championships. The top nine teams from the Championships will advance to the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Canada does not have to qualify for this event as it is given an exemption in to the Vancouver Olympics under the "Host Country" rule.

It is estimated there are more than 1.2 million curlers worldwide. While as many as 90 per cent are registered in Canada.

Curling is a complex and maddeningly difficult game to perfect, and the competition can be ruthless. Its not surprising that competitive curling attracts larger and larger crowds every year.

You'll be mesmerized as the tales of ice being furiously swept and wood gliding across it are told with a never-before-achieved drama.

The Life and Times of Sandra Schmirler
Schmirler's team defined the sport of women's curling for most of the 1990s and was also the first ever to win a gold medal in curling in Canada. Between 1991 and 1997, Schmirler skipped her Regina team to three Canadian and World titles - something that had never been done before. She topped that off by leading her team to the first-ever Olympic gold medal in women's curling in the 1998 Games in Nagano, Japan.

Curling defined

Curling is a team game with similarities to bowls and shuffleboard, played by two teams of four players each on a rectangular sheet of carefully prepared ice. Teams take turns sliding heavy, polished granite stones down the ice towards the target (called the house). Two sweepers with brooms accompany each rock and use timing equipment and their best judgment, along with direction from their teammates, to help direct the stones to their resting place. The complex nature of stone placement and shot selection has led some to refer to curling as "chess on ice."[http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/olympics/2006/writers/02/10/curling.good/index.html SI.com ? 2006 Winter Olympics ?
