I HATE MY CURLY HAIR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So we've all got something we hate about our appearance... apparently. For me, it's my hair.

Why oh why have I got this stuff growing out of my head? The majority of people have hair that swings and sways gently and oh, let's not forget, it grows DOWNWARDS. Mine? Well mine goes any which way it wants EXCEPT down!

Some people pay a fortune to have curly hair like mine. At least they have a choice!

Images are the property of Debnet and may not be used without permission

When I was a child, I grew up in a world where it seemed that every adult woman that I met would say 'Oh what beautiful curls! You'll be so pleased when you grow up and all your friends are paying for perms, you lucky thing!'

Lucky? Lucky?? Were they crazy?

I also wish I had a pound for every time I was told how much I was like Shirley Temple or asked to sing 'On the good ship Lollipop'

When I was a child, I was continually compared to Shirley Temple, just because I had curls like hers.

The shorter you cut curly hair, the tighter the curl will be.

My family all thought I was cute. They also told me how much like my Grandfather I was. He's the one I have to thank for this mop of unruly curls... thanks Grandad!

Eliza Caroline Phillips was my Great Grandmother and when someone kindly sent me this photograph of her a few years ago, I finally knew who I looked like. If my hair is pulled back and I don't have my mask on, I'm the double of her.

Here I am aged 12 months with my Great Aunt Maud. The curls were blond back then and stayed that way until I was three or four before turning auburn... or red... or titian, anything but ginger! As you can see, my Aunt's hair is straight apart from a roll she's put into the ends. Yep, you guessed it, she's from my Dad's side of the family!

When I started school, I left the protective bubble my family had provided and found I was in a world where I was the only one to have hair that grew up and out instead of flat and down.

Of course, in no time at all, the teasing started. That was soon joined by the name calling and as I progressed through school, this turned to full on bullying.

I didn't know how to handle this and spent many hours crying or saying 'it's not fair!'.

This period of my childhood wasn't helped when at the age of seven, my one and only sister was born and wouldn't you know it, she had straight hair! She took after my fathers side of the family and my roots were firmly planted on my Mothers side.

I tried allsorts of things to make my hair straight. Of course, as a child there's not a lot you can do so I became quite inventive. I remember taking some of my Mum's tights (pantihose) off the washing line and asking her for a stocking. I then made the three legs into a plait and VOILA! A home-made wig LOL! I played in my garden with my wig and pretended I had the longest straightest hair.

Age seven and a half. Here I am back left as you view. For the first time ever, I was taken to a hairdressers who blow dried my hair and made it trendy! I felt like a Princess. This was one of the happiest days of my childhood.

Over the years, the name calling and bullying got worse. When Cadburys brought out 'Curly Wurlys' I felt like my world hit an all time low. Just because I had curly hair.

When I left school and was earning my own money, I invested in a chemical straightening kit. Fantastic! Flat straight hair for the first time ever. Shame the chemicals made my hair snap off and it went slightly green, but hey, it was straight!!

When I reached the grand old age of seventeen, Afro's were all the rage... YIPPEE!! A hairstyle I could do although I needed the help of a demi perm. I finally felt at ease with my hair.

To dry your curls don't rub them dry after washing! BLOT! Use a product to hold and enhance, then use a diffuser.

About seven or eight years ago, my girls took their ceramic straighteners to me. It took them absolutely ages. It was amazing how much longer my hair was when it was straight. Doesn't look like me does it?

To straighten those curls, use a specialist product then blow dry using a large round blow drying brush. Then use ceramic straighteners. This will give a totally flat, straight look.

To grow unruly curls long, you have to go through the 'dragged through a hedge backwards' stage before you achieve the desired look. Mine is cut to square layers. My fringe is layered too.

This product transformed the way I was able to control my curls. I can now dry them gently without blowing a hurricane through them which just produces frizz!

Hey! I've learnt to tie it up too! When I do tie it up, I always have a ringlet at each side of my face and two or three along my neckline to soften the effect

As I've got older and wiser, I've come to realise there's no point in fighting Mother Nature.

So if you're like me and wake up looking like you've had a fright, just relax, learn to love the curls and rejoice in being known as 'The One With The Hair'

Drying naturally is always preferable to using heat. If you do use a dryer, make sure it's fitted with a diffuser.

Gimme the curls!

I envy your curls. You've got that whole Botticelli beauty thing going on. Lovely.

I used to iron my hair when I was a teen. The as I got older I paid to have a spiral perm (a lot $$$). My husband loved it and so did I. My hair was easy to keep and it always looked "dressed up."

I used to iron my hair when I was a teenager to make it really straight. But later I paid to have it permed (a lot $$). My husband loved my spiral perm and so did I. It was so easy to take care of and my hair always looked "dressed up & happy." As you can see, it's straight again.

SheWritesaLot says:

I have curly hair, too, and I was always bullied in school, so I feel your pain. I remember rolling my hair on juice cans and laying it out on the ironing board so my mother could iron it! But YOUR curls are beautiful and shiny! And it's true - once you stop fighting it and find a style that suits you, you end up loving your curls!

Shirley says:

Gimme the curls that is if you have them flaunt them! If you want bigger curls while wet twirl them around as if to make a rope in the direction you want them let dry then use fingers to break them up a bit. If you want more volume while wet pin the base of the curl where you need the lift. Never comb or brush your hair after its dry. Always use a product like gel, freeze, mousse, even hairspray..let hair dry and break up the curls with your fingers. Always ask your stylist if they are good with cutting curly hair if they hesitate or look at you strange 1st clue don't sit in that chair. If you don't like the way its being cut say something or excuse yourself to the restroom and alert management. DONT instruct a hairstylist how to cut your curly hair! If she doesn't know how you shouldn't be sitting in her chair. Find someone who loves to cut curly hair and don't be afraid to flaunt what God gave you. I'm a redheaded stepchild named Shirley with curly hair and you can't get more picked on than that...I survived and I am a great hairstylist! ;)

I definitely love you better with curly hair, but either way I love you :)

Greg says:

the curlier, the better!

Carmel_Aaron says:

My hair won't go straight, but it is not as curly as yours. I used to want straight hair that hangs down-instead of hair that floats along as I walked. Now I am just happy to have hair that holds my curls. I agree - I don't fight them much. Natural is much easier.

elyria says:

I have straight hair and for "special occasions" I love to curl my hair!!

Keep me straight and sleek!

Steve Kaye says:

Actually, I'm glad to have hair. At my age the hairs I have, act rowdy. That is, one day they point one way, the next day they point another. I've become a cartoon of weird hair.

toldyaso says:

Love your hair! You can always wrap a white bath rug around your shoulders and go to Halloween parties as Victoria from Twilight - random, but true lol :)

rorymullen says:

Straight and sleek. I can not run my fingers though her hair if it is curly.

---Chazz says:

I really don't care, but that wasn't an option.

dustytoes says:

I can't relate to this at all. My hair is pretty straight. I'd love more body, but maybe not all those curls, so I am someplace in between. I want perfect hair - that's all.. hahaha!

Pinkchic18 says:

I have curly hair so naturally I prefer straight hair :)

Rewards4life says:

Straight, straight, straight....I feel your pain. I also have curly hair, and I hate it!!!

Brite-Ideas says:

Well I sure know where your coming from! I have it too! In fact I wrote a poem about it called - Held Hostage by Curls - Move over Jerry Maguire It's my mission statement - www.drageda.com/2009/04/held-hostage-by-curls/

Lucy says:

I hate my hair!! I have extremely thick hair with curls to boot! I always say I look like a cross between a chow and a poodle. Curly and Poofy everywhere! I can't tame it, even when I think it's tamed, in a few hours, it's not! It hates me, I hate it.. the relationship is really unhealthy.

surfsusan says:

I have learned to love me very straight and very thick hair - now I hate the way my red colour fades away. Something new to work one I assume!.

Curl Taming Tips!

What I have learnt from living with this natural disaster on my head, is that you should NEVER use a hair brush on curly hair.

If you can afford to, use a good quality specialist shampoo, conditioner and curl definer. I constantly change what I use as I find my hair becomes resistant to one product after a while of continual use.

After washing, blot your hair dry. Don't rub it as this will cause it to frizz.

Apply specialist mousse, serum, gel, creme or lotion. You may need to try a variety of different ones before you find the product that suits your hair.

Don't use too much product as it will weigh heavy in your hair. Mouse products will go 'crunchy' on curls if you put too much on. It's a case of trial and error with each product until you find the right amount for your hair.

After applying the product, I usually just run my fingers through my hair, trying to persuade it to go where I want it to go. If you have time, allow your hair to dry naturally. If you need to use a dryer, make sure you have a diffuser fitted to it as a blast from a dryer will part your curls and leave you with a touch of frizz.

A brush may be ok on naturally wavy hair but not on curly hair. By pulling a brush through those curls it causes them to separate and frizz. Use either an Afro comb or your fingers. This keeps the curls and ringlets in place.

Try and avoid steam or very humid conditions. The curls absorb the heat and then you'll get the Frizzy Lizzy's setting in.

If it's windy or you're going to the beach, tie it back. The wind can be as damaging to curls as humidity, as can the sun! My hair was like straw after three months in Florida.

Find a good hairdresser who is experienced at cutting naturally curly hair. I must be a pain for my hairdresser because I'm always at her when she's cutting it by saying 'Not too much, just a little snip' she now knows if she cuts the amount she thinks she should cut, my hair will spring into such tight curls and look three inches shorter in a heart beat.

Be happy with your hair. I wouldn't be me if I didn't have my curls :)

NightBears Toe Curling Story...

I hated my curly hair. It made me stand out. I was already different. Taller and heavier than anyone in my class. I didn't really have feelings one way or the other about my curls until about 8th grade, when I realized I was a girl. Then suddenly life became very complicated. I had curls...

I did everything to rid myself of this albatross. I used chemicals like UNCURL and Curl Free, They worked well, but were expensive then I noticed they were killing my hair. So I started using less drastic, but still effective methods. I ironed my hair, I used orange juice cans to roll it on, I blew dried it while stretching the curls out. And last but not least. I taped it down while still wet, then I slept very carefully and when i untapped it in the morning, it was very straight, at least until I walked a little too fast and had one bead of sweat. in the humid area that I grew up in.

This went on for several years until I was in nursing training in my late teens and then suddenly my curls were acceptable and I had more important things to think about. So whether my vanity changed or my life changed, suddenly it became okay to have curly hair. And as happens to all of us, my mother became brilliant and was right...yet again. :)

I'd rather see your picture in your bio. You have great hair and a smile to match. As a child I used to have ringlets, but they never grew back after my mom cut my hair. Just think of your hair as I did...its happy hair that bounces. It looks wonderful. Poddy's right.

Why is it that people with curly hair wish for straight, and people with straight hair wish for curly? Well at least it seems that way :)
I would love to have either curly or straight hair... my hair can't seem to make up its mind and is usually just puffy (wavy) or whatever you want to call it. Not really straight and not really curly.. makes for very frustrating hair styling!

This is a great lens - my wife has very curly hair and I showed her this lens and she kept nodding in agreement as she read. (She could never understand why some women actually paid for perms!) When she finished reading she turned to me and said: "Now there's a lens you should bless!" So I did. Also lensrolled to "Wing-ing it on Squidoo," my tribute to some of the best lenses I've found since donning my wings.

I can't relate at all to this page. My hair is straight and I remember someone asking me in high school (70's), how I got my hair so straight! It's true that we always want what we don't have, but I think your hair is very pretty. I'm glad you like it okay now.

Your curls are beautiful! I know how you feel though. I've been fighting with curls and mostly frizz my whole life! I love my hair when it's straight, but I don't have the patience to straighten it, myself. I have a LOT of hair, and I've been called many names in the past! In the late 70's I was called "Poodle" because of a tight perm I had. The perm tamed the frizz. I was called names I won't mention here! I have found that the best and easiest thing for my psychotic hair is to use jumbo (I mean JUMBO) sized steam hot rollers on my hair. I loosely wrap my hair around them, and I don't leave them in longer than 30 minutes. I comb through the curls with my fingers and a wide-toothed rake. I end up with a million freakin' curls, but they are smooth and pretty. I feel like Medusa! I get compliments on the curly-do, which is nice, but I think I look a lot better with straight smooth hair with the ends flipped out. I guess we should just be thankful to have hair. ;-)

I have curly hair, from my Mothers side, and I hate it. I was teased at school as a boy with curly hair normally is, all fun but none the less uncalled for. All of my parents family friends said I was "lucky" and they "would do anything for curly hair" but I never felt the same. I shaved all of my hair off, (and still do) after a brief time experimenting with styles in my teens. I prefer it shaved, less time getting ready, less product and less stress!!! I was a hairdresser for 12 years and one of the most requested things was to make hair straight. Treatments are good but can be expensive, you can also use perm lotion. The reason perms go curly is because of the perming rods, if you follow the same procedure, (and neutralize) but keep combing your hair straight it will stay straight for the same length of time it takes for a perm to grow out. Great lens, you wear curly hair well, the afro is very cool....think I might grow mine back!

why dont you get a Keratin treatment?!it lasts for 3-4 months and it does not damage your hair at ALL it actually strengthens it by adding keratin to it and thats the main reason your hair will become straight because it got stronger!! its not that expensive.I did it in a salon for 300 but you can also do it yourself and ask some friend to help you! there are many brands you could get online i tried cocochoco and I already have it on my hair for 1 month ..so far so good oh and i got it from ebay for likr $90 with its special shampoo and all you could probably do your own research and get any other brands....

You've got gorgeous curls. I have spent soooooo much money over the years to get tight curls, because my hair is so fine and straight, and I've never liked it. Curly hair gives so much volume and just looks great.
