I think your curls are beautiful! My daughter has the prettiest curls in her hair, but I'm certain she didn't get them from me! My hair is straight and thick and won't hold any curl. Wonderful lens! :)

I can't tell you how many times mom would give me a Tony perm as a kid ... just like Shirley Temple. Celebrating all those hair raising, very curly, experiences.

Great lens, really enjoyed the read!
  • favored1 Jan 11, 2012 @ 2:42 pm | delete
I'd rather see your picture in your bio. You have great hair and a smile to match. As a child I used to have ringlets, but they never grew back after my mom cut my hair. Just think of your hair as I did...its happy hair that bounces. It looks wonderful. Poddy's right.

Yayyyy! Absolutely loving this lens. debnet and Nightbear, you both have lovely curls! Blessing this lens because it brings back so many memories

Why is it that people with curly hair wish for straight, and people with straight hair wish for curly? Well at least it seems that way :)
I would love to have either curly or straight hair... my hair can't seem to make up its mind and is usually just puffy (wavy) or whatever you want to call it. Not really straight and not really curly.. makes for very frustrating hair styling!

This is a great lens - my wife has very curly hair and I showed her this lens and she kept nodding in agreement as she read. (She could never understand why some women actually paid for perms!) When she finished reading she turned to me and said: "Now there's a lens you should bless!" So I did. Also lensrolled to "Wing-ing it on Squidoo," my tribute to some of the best lenses I've found since donning my wings.

My wife and daughters have this amazingly curly hair as well

This is a great lens written straight from the heart. A blessing is well deserved.

Thank you or sharing your story! I can relate, as my hair has some natural curl to it.
  • dustytoes Apr 17, 2011 @ 4:26 am | delete
I can't relate at all to this page. My hair is straight and I remember someone asking me in high school (70's), how I got my hair so straight! It's true that we always want what we don't have, but I think your hair is very pretty. I'm glad you like it okay now.
  • linseeturner Apr 11, 2011 @ 5:20 pm | delete
You should LOVE those curls...girls like me would die for some natural curl!!!
  • Carmel_Aaron Mar 30, 2011 @ 11:47 am | delete
Thanks for sharing. I identified - some, but never had as many curls as you. This was a pleasant read. Enjoy your curls - so many envy you.
    Thumbs up...

Your curls are beautiful! I know how you feel though. I've been fighting with curls and mostly frizz my whole life! I love my hair when it's straight, but I don't have the patience to straighten it, myself. I have a LOT of hair, and I've been called many names in the past! In the late 70's I was called "Poodle" because of a tight perm I had. The perm tamed the frizz. I was called names I won't mention here! I have found that the best and easiest thing for my psychotic hair is to use jumbo (I mean JUMBO) sized steam hot rollers on my hair. I loosely wrap my hair around them, and I don't leave them in longer than 30 minutes. I comb through the curls with my fingers and a wide-toothed rake. I end up with a million freakin' curls, but they are smooth and pretty. I feel like Medusa! I get compliments on the curly-do, which is nice, but I think I look a lot better with straight smooth hair with the ends flipped out. I guess we should just be thankful to have hair. ;-)

This was a great Lens! I love all your photos and you look awesome with curls!!
  • Pinkchic18 Mar 17, 2011 @ 9:46 am | delete
Wonderful lens here!! It's important to embrace what makes you were given, but most of the time don't we just always try to change it? So true! Great job here :)

I have curly hair, from my Mothers side, and I hate it. I was teased at school as a boy with curly hair normally is, all fun but none the less uncalled for. All of my parents family friends said I was "lucky" and they "would do anything for curly hair" but I never felt the same. I shaved all of my hair off, (and still do) after a brief time experimenting with styles in my teens. I prefer it shaved, less time getting ready, less product and less stress!!! I was a hairdresser for 12 years and one of the most requested things was to make hair straight. Treatments are good but can be expensive, you can also use perm lotion. The reason perms go curly is because of the perming rods, if you follow the same procedure, (and neutralize) but keep combing your hair straight it will stay straight for the same length of time it takes for a perm to grow out. Great lens, you wear curly hair well, the afro is very cool....think I might grow mine back!

Curly hair almost always draws attention in a crowd so be happy with it :)
  • Irene Nov 25, 2010 @ 11:55 pm | delete
why dont you get a Keratin treatment?!it lasts for 3-4 months and it does not damage your hair at ALL it actually strengthens it by adding keratin to it and thats the main reason your hair will become straight because it got stronger!! its not that expensive.I did it in a salon for 300 but you can also do it yourself and ask some friend to help you! there are many brands you could get online i tried cocochoco and I already have it on my hair for 1 month ..so far so good oh and i got it from ebay for likr $90 with its special shampoo and all you could probably do your own research and get any other brands....
  • pastella Nov 20, 2010 @ 6:03 pm | delete
You've got gorgeous curls. I have spent soooooo much money over the years to get tight curls, because my hair is so fine and straight, and I've never liked it. Curly hair gives so much volume and just looks great.
  • arncyn Nov 10, 2010 @ 7:37 am | delete
Aww, but I think your natural curls look great on you! It's nice to know we have options to change our hairstyles every now and then though. Loved the wit & humor on this lens. ~blessed~
  • mom247 Nov 8, 2010 @ 4:29 am | delete
I wonder whether you have heard of the brazilian blow dry. This is something I'm considering myself. It only lasts for 3 months, relaxes rather than perfectly straightens hair and is supposed to actually improve condition as it contains keratin. I have read endless reviews but I am terrified of trying it! Also, my daughter has gorgeous curly hair like yours and I want her to love it as much as I do, so I wonder whether straightening mine is a bad example!
  • Janet21 Oct 25, 2010 @ 11:08 am | delete
So sorry to hear your were teased & bullied because of your curly hair. {{hugs}} i like your hair. My daughter has curly hair, too. Thankfully she is not teased because of it.
  • Jodi_k Oct 3, 2010 @ 2:43 pm | delete
I know EXACTLY how you feel. Exactly!
  • Gloria Jul 8, 2010 @ 4:55 pm | delete
Hi, very nice lens. When I want to straighten out my curly, often frizzy hair I use the InStyler rotating hot iron. It's the only iron that I found that does the job.
  • kerastasehaircare Jun 8, 2010 @ 5:38 am | delete
Thought the lens was very informative was a pleasure to read as i too have curly hair and struggle. keep writing.

I know you won't like that I say this but I love your curly hair. I admire it every time I see your picture online. My daughter has curly hair although not quite as curly as yours. My mom won't believe me when I tell her that she is not supposed to brush it. Blessed by an angel.

You look good with curly hair. I really like the afro. 5*s
  • fanfreluche Jun 25, 2009 @ 2:17 am | delete
It's true that most people hate something about the way they look....some with flat hair would kill to have your curls....and they pay fortunes at the salon to have them!
  • EverydayMiracles Jun 19, 2009 @ 2:02 pm | delete
Your curls are beautiful! I can't imagine the hassle of growing the hair out though... I've seen the look you're talking about and I can imagine your frustration!
  • WebSpinstress Jun 19, 2009 @ 8:56 am | delete
I have to agree...your curls are absolutely beautiful and just another part of what we love about you! As someone with straight, auburn hair - couldn't you guess? I'd prefer if it was curly. ;-)

    Redheads with curls RULE!
  • ArtByLinda Jun 17, 2009 @ 1:37 am | delete
I think you hair is beautiful in its natural state, but I have an older sister with the same curly hair and watched her do so many crazy things to straighten in. Those were the days before straightener! She used huge soup cans, with the ends cut out to "curl it straight", permed it straight, my mom tried "ironing it. lol. She finally accepted it with maturity and marriage and is beautiful to me.

You hair make you what you are. I wouldn't change a thing.

Great lens, Deb! Love your curly locks :) I'd have to pay a lot to get mine that way ;) 5*s
  • JanTUB Jun 16, 2009 @ 3:16 pm | delete
My hair is curly, although not as curly as yours, and I always wanted it to behave, instead of doing its own thing! Two of my daughters have really curly hair, and it's red (sorry , one's chestnut, one's dark auburn VBG). The youngest put pillar box red in hers once and she looked amazing!. When she was about four, I was putting a rinse through my hair. "What are you doing, Mummy?" "Dyeing my hair, bub." "What colour's it going to be?" "Redder." "Yuk! I hate red hair!" "You've got a problem then, kid!"

Redheads have much more fun, and we're hot-blooded too! Faved, of course! And some stars too.
  • nightbear Jun 16, 2009 @ 1:36 pm | delete
I admit today their is nothing more beautiful than curls. But i fought it my whole younger life. I much prefer them now that I am matured. I love your curls, and think you are beautiful. One curly head to another. :)
  • mulberry Jun 16, 2009 @ 11:47 am | delete
We all spend years trying to change things to fit the norm, only to discover we look best with what we were born with in the first place. I may need to come back. My hair is straight but I've noticed some of my new gray hair is more curly...wow, now that will be an adjustment!
  • Janiece Jun 16, 2009 @ 11:08 am | delete
Yup, most everyone is telling you you look good in the curls, and I agree! As a teenager, I used to curl my hair every morning with hot curlers...but after I had kids, I gave that up rather quickly! Suddenly getting a little extra sleep became waaaayyy more important than having curly hair! LOL
  • tamron Jun 16, 2009 @ 10:55 am | delete
I think your a very beautiful lady! I enjoyed looking at different pictures from different times. The Afro was a little much! I like curly hair because I don't have curly hair but that's the way it is!
  • roysumit Jun 16, 2009 @ 10:23 am | delete
Making such a lens out of (h)air is hair raisingly great.
  • Wysiwigs Jun 16, 2009 @ 10:08 am | delete
I think the grass is always greener on the other side of the beauty salon (or something like that anyway :o) I started with straight hair, lost it to chemo, and now have wavy/curly hair which I LOVE. I will admit, however, that several months with an "Uncle Fester" hairdo will definitely adjust your thinking towards hair of any variety. Great lens!
  • 24websurf Jun 16, 2009 @ 9:31 am | delete
What beautiful eyes to go with the gorgeous hair! I wanted blue eyes and auburn hair. I have green with brown hair (or whatever color I decide to have covering the grey). We always want what we don't have, don't we?
  • jaye3000 Jun 16, 2009 @ 9:13 am | delete
Great lens. It was fun learning about you through all the hairstyles :)
  • Rewards4life Jun 16, 2009 @ 2:13 am | delete
Oh Debbie! I don't have a curly hair, but to highlight the randomness of my example, my hair curl just on the temples, so all is straight and two horns (curly hair) on each side of my head. That's freaky! I think you look very pretty with your curls, use it as an advantage and not a curse. Lovely lens. =)
  • prosperity66 Jun 16, 2009 @ 1:46 am | delete
I liked your lens so much! I HATE my curly hair and used to straight it as much as I can when I was younger.
Since five years, I let them as they are, don't brush them a lot, wash them every three days as I don't have and don't want to take the time (at least one entire hour) to straight them any more!
Congrats on your lens, rated 5 stars and thanks for having shared the nightmare of any curly person in the world :)
  • davidhallstrom Jun 16, 2009 @ 12:26 am | delete
Great lens but your curley hair fits your face so stop trying to change it. You look fine the way you are.
  • poddys Jun 15, 2009 @ 9:51 pm | delete
I much prefer your hair curly and natural, but I suppose it's because that's the YOU I have come to know and love. And you do look gorgeous with those lovely curls. Another great lens sweetheart.
  • sukkran Jun 15, 2009 @ 8:16 pm | delete
you are beautiful with your natural hair. i wonder why you hate your hair style, it is most attractive part of debby.

    Fun lens...very cool :-)
  • annetteghallowell Jun 15, 2009 @ 6:50 pm | delete
A great idea for an "About Me" lens. I have a lot more empathy for you curly headed lot now! My hair has natural wave so I have not been subjected to your problems, except the few times I decided to get a perm!
  • WhiteOak50 Jun 15, 2009 @ 6:30 pm | delete
I have the naturally curly hair. I know the Shirley Temple bit too well, in my case it went to the extreme with my family. Up until I was about 6 years old I was completely blonde, but my hair got darker as I got older which ended up being med/dark brown. But the Curls... grrr, let me tell you, you are right the shorter your hair the tighter the curls but the longer your hair the more it straightens. My hair is very long to the small of my back, and unless it is raining, it is just lays in waves. When it rains I use a cream leave in condition gel that helps to keep the frizz down. Great Topic!
  • HealthyAndPainless Jun 15, 2009 @ 5:44 pm | delete
Tell me about it curly hair can be a pain! But I still love my curly hair. When I am tired of it I blow dry it straight LOL!!!
  • QueSea Jun 15, 2009 @ 4:43 pm | delete
If curly hair can help solve a court case (Legally Blonde) it must be a good thing. Even if Ted Danson (Cheers) says, "Stay away from women with curly hair. It's the craziness coming out!" LOL

Nice lens. My mom was a hairdresser. She has naturally curly hair like her mom. She spent her entire adult life straightening it and bleaching it blond (the Marilyn Monroe thing). My poor dad. (grin).

After my grandmother's funeral, she made me promise one thing. "Don't bury me with curly hair."

I still think curly hair is a good thing. LOL.
  • aj2008 Jun 15, 2009 @ 4:17 pm | delete
Each of my girls has different hair but the one who used to have the most angst was...yep, the curly one! My, you really are like your great Grandmother - amazing.

Great lens Deb - both content and layout. Angel Blessings to you!

Isn't it funny how we want different hair then what we have?
  • BevsPaper Jun 15, 2009 @ 4:04 pm | delete
The curls fit you, it is the way you are supposed to look. Embrace them.
  • Li-Li-ThePinkBookworm Jun 15, 2009 @ 3:55 pm | delete
Interesting lens. Although my mom would have to disagree. Her hair is just a straight as a stick brown, no fluff, curl, anything. Which stinks because she cannot do anything with is, or knows what to do with it. She has to pay to get a perm, and the past couple ones were done wrong so they did not last very long. I like curly hair, but the longer my hair gets the less curls it has. Now it is shoulder length and when I get it wet, I can get some curls, but not enough to make it big. But, I guess we all have issues with something, so you have my pity :)

    5 stars, Li Li
  • The_Party_Animal Jun 15, 2009 @ 3:51 pm | delete
You are beautiful!!! I pay big money for curls like that!!! But no one is happy with what they have you are right. I am not happy god gave me a huge butt - lol. Thanks for all the tips,.
