Current Issues In Nutrition:

Recently, people have been paying more attention to current issues in nutrition, which can affect your overall health and well-being.  In fact, we realize now that what and how much we eat may be directly linked to serious medical conditions like obesity, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and certain types of cancer.

Given the fast pace of everyday life, and the reality of the working family, we don't always have time to eat as well as we should. Taking that time, however, is imperative to give our children a good start in nutritional awareness and to prevent the obesity which is so rampant in our society today.

GIVE ME YOUR OPINION

There has been a discussion recently on whether restaurants should post nutritional information on their menu.

What do you think?

Yes, they should give consumers a chance to choose healthy food if they want to.

i think people should eat healthy foo,to avoid rampant diseases.

:))
this should really be followed ....

happynutritionist says:

Many restaurants already provide information in literature and at their websites, especially many fast food chains. Basic nutrition information may be helpful, but no need to go overboard. People have common sense and should use it when making food choices.

No, I care only about the taste of food, not about calories and fat.

passer-bye says:

If I am going to eat at a resturaunt for breakfast then its a one off and I don't care what nutritional information is on their menu. On the other hand if I ate there regularly then it would need to be on the menu.

HERBMASTER says:

I wish there was a 3rd option here! While nutrition might help, we still make our excuses and choose to eat as we please. Even with the info fast food places give us, we are still deceived into thinking we are doing OK. I believe poor nutrition is a primary contributor to most disease. We need nutritional experts to keep coming forward with their knowledge.

lynzi hambleton says:

no i think that a simple low fat low calories is enough information! having a menu full of information will make it longer and less atractive also put you off foods that you may really enjoy simply because of the fat level! being health aware dosnt mean eating salad all your life!

Varying Nutritional Needs in the Population

We've all heard about the importance of a healthy balanced diet.

Good nutrition is vital for everyone's good health and is absolutely essential for the healthy growth and development of children and adolescents.

Specific dietary needs will enter into play depending on factors such as age, health and nutritional status and special cases such as pregnancy or lactation. A diabetic will of course require some considerations in his or her diet due to the lack of insulin production in the body. Preparing foods for diabetics requires research and planning to keep fat intake as low as possible while providing for the overall nutritional health, particularly in a child.

Due to their diverse activity level, keeping their glucose elevated will be challenging at best on some days, while less effort will be required on days when they are more sedentary, such as when weather prohibits outside activity.

A woman who is pregnant or lactating will require an additional intake of proteins and iron as well as minerals to assure not only her own health but that of the child she is providing nutrients for.

Why Is Nutrition Important?

Is Nutrition Important?
Absolutely!
But why is nutrition important?
Why can't we just eat anything we like?

We are all aware to some level of the need to ensure a proper diet for ourselves and our families.
Researchers however assure us that the use of specific foods may be critical to our continuing health. Certain aspects of foods such as antioxidants, are known to help in the fight against cancer, heart disease, hypertension and diabetes.

Many of these, such as heart disease, are largely preventable given the right type of foods. We can assess our risk for these health issues taking into account factors such as age, body type and heredity, and plan for their prevention using less fatty foods, leaner meats and more fiber and vegetables to prevent the development of such health issues as arteriosclerosis and atherosclerosis.

Maintaining a healthy weight isn't enough since other factors enter into play along with that weight such as a family history of heart related or diabetic illnesses. For a child from a diabetic family, it is imperative to follow a careful regimen of diet and exercise to prevent the onset of diabetes related issues such as retinopathy.

And exercise, the second part of the equation..! Remember to be kind to those hips, knees and ankles.

And yes indeed they should include nutritional facts at restaurants or at least the calorie count. Even a scale, between 250-500 such and such rating, 500-1,000 another rating and so forth. That would be a big help for people concerned with managing their weight. Or if nothing else making them more responsible for the decisions they make.
