Curriculum for Homeschool

Homeschool Curriculum, Homeschooling Curriculum

Choosing the best curriculum for homeschooling can be a tough job. Every homeschool mother wants to make the right choices for her family. To make it even harder, every family is different, so no one can really tell you what is the best for your family. Here is a guide to help you choose curriculum for homeschooling.

Things to consider when choosing curriculum for homeschool.

  • What is your child's/ children's learning style? (Hands on, Audio, Visual, Love to read, Love to listen, Busy doing, ect.)
  • What is your teaching style? (Love lesson plans, hate lesson plans, love to "wing it", Hands on, Love reading aloud, Hate reading aloud, need a textbook, hate textbooks, ect.)
  • Your budget
  • Christian vs. Secular curriculum
  • What type of supplements do you want?
  • Is your child ready for this particular curriculum. Just because your child is in a certain grade level, does not mean they can do any curriculum in that grade. Some companies tend to be harder than others. As a rule of thumb, Abeka, tends to be a bit challenging.
  • What subjects are you going to be teaching this year?

Lapbooking

Lapbooking is a great supplement to homeschool curriculum. They are a lot more interesting than worksheets and they help your child retain the knowledge. What is even better, your child can go back and look at their lapbooks for years to come. Each time they relook at the lapbook, they will be further ingraining the knowledge they gleaned. These books are good to have if you do a lot of lapbooks.

Educational Coloring Books

Educational coloring books make a great addition to your curriculum for homeschool. Coloring pages can be used in notebooks, lapbooks, used during read-alouds and coloring pages can used in other educational projects. I usually like to have several on hands that related to the subjects that we are studying about.

I know everything I get from them is from a different style. For example: Spectrum is for math, but reading is from another source. Thanks for the great lens, be blessed!

The only two things I could think to add would be the Saxon D.I.V.E. for Math, my daughter and I found it an invaluable resource, and for free you could add the World book scope and sequence so you could find out what was being taught when. that was helpful when we were first starting out in middle school level. We're in New York State and they tell you what has to be covered and you figure out when and how.
Hope this was useful. Great lens.
    Sincerely, Anna2of5

I always used Abeka, and although it was a good curriculum, it was extremely difficult....a lot of homework, and long lessons. I think if I had it to do over, I would use a lighter curriculum. Thanks for the resource! *Liked*! :)
