Barnes To Stokes
1992 UCLA (5-5, unranked) vs. USC (6-2-1, #15) at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. With 4:14 left in the game, the score is tied 31-31 after the Bruins were down by 14 earlier in the fourth quarter. A Trojan punt pins the Bruins deep into their own territory, back on the four yard line. Two successive running plays bring the ball out six yards to the 10 yard line. On 3rd & 4, fourth-string walk-on quarterback John Barnes makes a ballsy play and lofts a pass to J.J. Stokes, who jukes past one defender and carries another into the end zone for the go ahead touchdown. Although USC comes back to score another TD, they miss the two point conversion attempt (props to the Trojans, at least, for not going for the tie). Bruins win 38-37. A number of well-known players participated in this game. USC had Rob Johnson at quarterback, Curtis Conway & Johnnie Morton at wide receiver, and Jason Sehorn on defense. For the Bruins, J.J. Stokes (of course), Sean LaChapelle, and Mike Nguyen were the receivers and Kevin Williams was the running back. The stout defense included Bruce Walker, Othello Henderson, Jamir Miller, Donnie Edwards, Carlton Gray, and Nkosi Littleton. Bill Plaschke of the Los Angeles Times wrote a nice article on John Barnes on the 10th year anniversary of this game. Laila Ali ties the knot
Hello, I'm Rebecca Field with a UPI entertainment update on this Monday, July 23, 2007. Former "Dancing with the stars" contestant and boxing champ Laila Ali has tied the knot. There were reportedly about 200 guests at the ceremony including her parents boxing legend Muhammad Ali and Veronica Porsche Anderson. The couple met two years ago and got engaged last Thanksgiving. Televangelist Tammy Faye Messner has lost her battle with cancer. She died Friday morning at the age of 65. Messner first learned she had colon cancer in 1993 and announced it had spread in 2004. Doctors recently stopped treating her. She appeared on CNN's "Larry King Live" on Thursday, weighing only 65 pounds. Her son says she died peacefully and is no longer in pain. Celebrities gathered over the weekend to welcome David Beckham to L.A.'s Galaxy soccer team. The crowds went wild when the soccer star played about 13 minutes in the second half despite an injured ankle. Actress Katie Holmes and her daughter Suri showed up....as well as Eva Longoria and Brooke Shields. And of course his biggest fans were there...his wife Victoria and their three kids. Galaxy played England's Chelsea, but lost 1 to 0. The comedy "I now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry" smashed U.S. box offices over the weekend. The film, starring Adam Sandler and Kevin James took the number one spot, bringing in more than 34 million dollars in ticket sales over the weekend. "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" fell to second place and "Hairspray" took third. That's all according to Box Office Mojo. NBC took big honors at the Television Critics Awards over the weekend. The network won four awards including program of the year for its hit series "Heroes." "The Office" was honored for outstanding achievement in comedy. HBO's "The Sopranos" was also a big winner...it was recognized for outstanding achievement in drama and also grabbed the heritage award. That award honors a program's impact on pop culture. That's all for now. Go to upi.com for all the day's news and updates. Thanks for watching.
