Some New Ideas

Custom BathPlanning to remodel your bathroom? Consider one of these popular themes for your bathroom décor:

Casual Elegance

A clean, contemporary bathroom is an asset to any home. To keep the look elegant, limit the color scheme to a neutral theme or add one bold accent color, such as a royal blue or burgundy.

Update your old bathroom into casual elegance with the addition of sleek surfaces, such as solid slab granite or marble countertops. Any tile should have minimal grout exposed, leaving the surfaces smooth. Mirrors and glass should use clean lines, with simple touches such as beveled edges.

Select modern plumbing fixtures with elegant hardware appointments. Brushed nickel is an extremely popular hardware choice; two-toned hardware is also very contemporary. Pedestal sinks are extremely popular for their sleek, streamlined appearance, although they offer less cabinet storage than traditional counter sinks. Lighting should be bright and complimentary, but the fixtures should not be bold or eye-catching on their own.

Fabrics for towels and rugs should be plush and deep, with soft textures. If the accent color was used, towels should match that tone for continuity. Accessorize with glass pharmacists jars or hand thrown ceramics.

Nautical

A modern classic for both adult's and children's bathrooms, nautical themes are a natural for this water-infused space. For an adult nautical bathroom's color scheme, use a blend of blues, combined with ivory and neutrals. Accessorize with brushed chrome hardware, for the look of weathered fittings or with shiny, industrial stainless steel.

Plumbing fixtures with squared edges and clean lines fit the nautical theme. A blue tile border in a sand-toned tile shower wall can add a stunning accent into an otherwise mellow neutral. While traditional nautical décor emphasized blue and white, the neutrals add a more polished look to this classic. Artwork of historic clippers completes the theme.

For a children's nautical theme add bright reds and blues to the color scheme and work in a fun motif such as a lighthouse or seashells. Paint a corner cabinet to look like a lighthouse, and mount steel boating lights in place of more traditional fixtures. Or, add a tile border of bright, but monotone seashells.

Shabby Chic

The imperfect elements of shabby chic style lend a nostalgic comfort to any bathroom. Use a comfortable blend of patterns and textures to create this homey look. Liberal use of fabric - as a window covering, on vanity stool cushions, in rugs and wall hangings - helps to warm up a shabby chic bathroom.

To accomplish this look, use traditional plumbing fixtures, with curving lines. Hardware should be somewhat ornate, without being overly fussy; brass or gold-tone hardware is perfect for completing the shabby chic bathroom.

The color palette for a shabby chic décor includes distinctive tones, vivid without leaning to the electric or pastel. Classic choices include French blue, sage green, rusty red and periwinkle. Artwork of pastoral scenes, botanicals or sunny vacation scenes work beautifully in this design style.

Palm covered tropics

A tropical island with abundant palms is the bathroom dream of many a modern homeowner. Select one or two warm, tropical colors, such as hot pink, orange or sunny yellow for your theme. Combine this color with a neutral and accent it with a cooler leafy green or sea blue. Bamboo or terra cotta tile floorings
offer cool contrast to the heat of the colors in this vibrant scheme.

Stash towels in wicker baskets; cover a storage cabinet with leafy palm frond fans. A ceiling fan to move the steamy air in this tropical paradise adds personality, if the bathroom is amply proportioned. Cabinets of bamboo or natural-toned wood look best with a tropical theme.

Plumbing fixtures should have simple lines, with chrome or brass hardware. Add a border to neutral tile of sunset orange to carry the warm tropical color throughout the room. Or, consider tiling the entire shower in glistening Caribbean blue tile, for an ocean in your island oasis. Glass tiles shimmer like sunlight on water when used to create a counter top or shower wall.

Palm botanicals or island sunsets are excellent art choices for a tropical bathroom. Liberally place leafy plants in terra cotta, sandstone or wicker planters to complete the look.
