Building Custom Choppers Made Easier
If you have ever seen a show on custom choppers, or custom chopper builders like American Chopper, or something on the Speed channel, you are probably wondering how they do it. Or maybe you are wondering if YOU can build a chopper?
The good news is it's possible for anyone with tools to build a chopper in their garage. You can start with a chopper kit bike if you don't have a lot of mechanical experience (make sure you have a friend help you that does though), or you can start from the ground up. This is where it gets really tricky...
If you build a custom chopper from scratch, you have to be very patient, and you must have all the proper tools and parts. Otherwise, you will be heading for disaster. For example, if you decide to build a chopper frame (this is for experienced metalworkers only), you will need chopper frame plans, a frame jig, welding tools and supplies, and plenty of room.
Building Custom Choppers...
Building custom choppers from scratch, meaning, building a frame, and most of the parts, is for very experienced builders only. As a matter of fact, even the top custom chopper builders don't build all of their own parts. They order out for all of their parts, except maybe for the major parts like the gas tank, and fenders. As you may have seen on Orange County Choppers, they order the frame, use stock parts, and then build some of the smaller custom parts, like the handle bars. If you don't have any experience, you should read up on metalworking, and building custom motorcycles before you to anything. There are many good books and videos on the subject. If you have at least $40 to spend, Ron Covell has the best metalworking instructional DVD's in the world. One of his instructional DVD's is on how to build a chopper chassis. These DVD's are perfect for people interested in learning the craft of working with metal, and it's ideal for experienced metalworkers who want to improve their skill.
Chopper Kits Might Be Best!
If you think you have some skill, then maybe starting with a chopper kit bike, otherwise known as a bike in a box is the way to go. This way you get your feet wet, build a killer chopper, and get experience under your belt. - I like to watch the program name "American Choppers" In this program they show about how the custom bike builders they make the different design bikes and which parts they make and which parts they buy. The good design concept is must for making chopper bikes.
