Ponies!
Well to make a My Little Pony custom you'll need a pony to begin with. Now you have a few options, you can buy only the pony you need or buy in bulk or lots. The difference is the base cost of the pony and that fact that in a bulk buy not every pony may be usable. Generally I want something that is near mint to mint condition for my ponies. Individual Ponies
You'll pay more per pony but you will guarantee to finding a mint to near mint condition pony.
Bulk Lots
I shoot for around a $1.00 to $1.50 per pony and yes I include shipping in my calculations.
The Basic Tools
Basic of basic items, I recommend you scout around your town or home for these items.
- Pliers (long needle nose)
- Acetone, make sure it's 100% straight Acetone
- Tapestry Needles, I like size 22, found in craft stores near the embroidery stuff.
- Dental Floss or 20lb Beading Cord, personally I like the 20lb beading cord (that's cord not wire, the wire hurts the hands and doesn't bend as nicely)
- Scissors
- Zip Ties, Home Depot or other home store
- PITT Artist Pen, craft stories usually with the drawing supplies
- Sketch Pad
- Colored Pencils
- Future Floor Polish, Home Depot
- Mod Podge, craft stores with the craft acrylic craft paints
- Satin or Gloss Varnish, craft store usually with the acrylic craft paints
- Xacto Knife
Why do I need these funky items? Well they go with particular parts of pony customizing. My Custom My Little Pony Tutorial does a lot to explain their uses, but I'll give you some ideas as we go through the list.
Pony Hair
I have only found two wonderful resources for pony hair.Restore Doll: http://www.restoredoll.com High quality Saran Hair
Dolly Hair: http://www.dollyhair.com Actual My Little Pony nylon hair in a HUGE range of colors and also Saran hair, Mohair and other types.
Rule of thumb for purchasing: For any pony you'll need 1 to 2 hanks or skeins. This does not include when you do color mixes, which you'll need less. You may need more depending on how thick you go. One customizer uses up to 5 hanks of hair per pony o_0
BIG NOTE! The color on the screen and the color of the hair can be different, usually not by much, however play it safe. If you need a delicate pink and two colors look like what you want, be safe and get both. One will certainly be exactly what you want and another may not be what you want, but you'll find a use for it. Building a supply of hair is good, this way anytime you have a random idea you aren't stuck sitting at your computer just buying a couple hanks at a time. I personally buy as much as I can when I can. I also organize by colors so if I have no orange hair, I'll buy a few different shades of orange, same with brown or various whites. Then no matter what I want to do I have colors to go with my musings.
Brushes and Paint
Splurge on a good set!
You can buy these at your craft store, one by one or in sets. There are two different sets you want.
A utility set, for your varnishes and other brush unfriendly chemicals. The utility set you can buy a children's set for like $2.00 and that works, just remember to wash thoroughly after each use.
A fine painting set for your acrylic work on the pony, I mean like Taklon or Sable Hair. You can play with these in a craft store but I find that I can get a better deal online or just by begging my mother-law-for a set for Christmas ^_^
For paints I highly recommend Delta Ceramcoat or Folk Art paints. You can easily find these in any craft store buy some nice lots online.

Loew Cornell Brushes
My favotire brand. I have a set of Taklons.
Delta Cermacoat Paints
My favorite brand, but don't be afraid to find a brand you enjoy.
Decorative Painting
Some wonderful books on painting techniques that apply to ponies or other surfaces.
Extra Fun Things
Sure you can stop at the basics and make some wonderful ponies, but why stop with the basics. Half the fun of doing things like this is to keep playing and experimenting. So let's take a snapshot of some wonderful and unique things you can add to your ponies.Every little personal touch you can add is a beautiful thing, it also helps you set a style tone.
Beautiful and well sculpted pony, my interpretation of the Queen of Hearts form Alice and Wonderland. by sculpting the clothes I gave her more of a real feeling.
Sculpting Supplies
I prefer air dry two part Apoxie Sculpt or Apoxie Clay, it's strong as heck and will dry with no shrinkage. You can use polymer clay and I have played with it, but I have been vigil and prayed for a no melted pony(oh yes it can happen). The tick is to remove the magnet and then put the pony on a ceramic tile and watch very carefully. I've also had shrinkage problems with polymer clay, so spend a little more and get the Apoxie stuff.
Swarovski Flatback Gems
Adding some beautiful sparkle to a pony is a wonderful touch. Also you can make it a central focus for a particular design. The brand name really helps in your sales.
Art Glitter Fantasy Film
At some point I'll write a tutorial on how to make fantasy film wings, until then Deb Wood has a wonderful tutorial on Fantasy Film wings. One look at these and you will be inspired for a whole bunch of fairy ponies or even use as fins for merponies.
Artistic Wire
You'll need some good wire for various things like armatures for sculpting work, making tiaras/jewelry and wings. Smaller numbers are thicker than high numbers. So use like 16 - 20 gauge wire for any wire that carries a big load and use the finer wires for the accents.
Fine Glitter
When you need a little sparkle without overkill.
How to apply:
Use a thin layer of Mod Podge
Sprinkle glitter (make sure your pony is on a piece of paper)
Tap to remove extra (on paper)
Let the pony dry
Use the paper like a funnel to pour extra glitter back into bag.
Some people add another layer of Mod Podge over the glitter, I personally don't, just realize that with all glitter things they will sprinkle off with excessive touching.
Another option is to mix the glitter with your glue and apply that way. I have not tried it.

Delica Beads
Precision beautiful Japanese beads. Use for pony jewelry to other fun things. I also use these for making bracelets for myself.
NOTE! Higher numbers equal smaller sizes.

Micro Beads
Something a little more robust than glitter, makes beautiful bold pieces or sea foam for merpony tails.
My Customs!
Give you an idea of some of the possibilities.
Shop Bunnyville!
My other love, go on you know you want something cute ^_^
