Wedding fashion, hair and food tips and ideas from TV Challenge shows

A lot of creative competition reality tv shows these days have challenges that center around weddings. Many of the contestants, the competitors on the shows are professionals in their fields. They're the types of people who brides and grooms might hire for custom weddings every day.

Several of the shows, among them Project Runway & Top Chef, place the competitors in perhaps higher-than-usual-stress versions of what may be real-world situations. Fashion designers have brides as clients.

Chefs, caterers and the like do the food for weddings all the time. They cringe at the phrase "wedding food" and how we expect something less than average to be served at weddings. Hair stylists also are called upon to work their magic for those in the wedding party.

Make-up artists, interior designers, musicians, artists and creative-types of all stripes know how important a wedding can be for their bottom line and for future business.

Can we as viewers get real-world ideas from these reality shows? What do you think?

"Tabatha and Tyson are really talented - that's why Tyson selected Tabatha as his partner, after all -- so I was expecting great things from them. But they couldn't get past their apparent hatred for each other. The hair was a mess: the updo Tabatha created for the bride was too big -- it really did look like she'd forgotten to take out the giant Velcro rollers.

Tyson's French twist for the matron of honor was helmet-like. And the mother of the bride had bad highlights that reminded me of a girl in my 8th grade class. None of it was good."

Shear Genius Wedding Challenge Season 3

Guest judge Tabatha Coffey, herself eliminated from Season one of Shear Genius in a Wedding Challenge returned to judge this season's Wedding Challenge.

The scene was a lavish Indian wedding. Bridesmaids wanted their formal hairstyles changed for a more relaxed reception party.

The top three are Jon, Janine and Brian. Brig, Adee and Amy are at risk of being cut. Brian is the winner. Adee is eliminated and sent packing back to England.

Stephanie: "A wedding cake is no joke. People spend like two days making wedding cakes and spend like $5,000 on them because they're a big old pain in the ass."

-- Richard from Season 4's Team Bride won but handed the prize over to Stephanie who whipped up a great looking and tasting wedding from scratch. Stephanie went on to win the entire Top Chef competition that season and become the first woman to ever win.

On an early wedding challenge on Next Food Network Star, contestant Nikki dropped her dessert on judge Bobby Flay's suit.

"...They're told they have 90 minutes to decorate a three-tiered wedding cake, which will be judged by none-other than Duff from Food Network's Ace of Cakes. At this point I was pretty surprised that they'd have a wedding challenge so soon in the game. However, it must be a quick way to sort out the folks that get it, from those that don't (what was with some of those cakes?!?). The winning cake was a simple white cake with blue dots, created by Amy, who also happened to be the only person who had ever worked with fondant before.

"After the wedding cakes were rated, they're then greeted by Robert Irvine from Dinner Impossible. If you thought the 90 minute wedding cake was a zinger, he's there to raise the bar. Try a complete semi-vegetarian wedding for 100 people in just 6 hours. That's right 6 hours. The winners of the two previous challenges become team captains, and Amy (in a stroke of genius) purposely chooses the folks who are caterers. Also one team has 6 folks and the other has 5, but gets an extra $500 to make up for it. Surprisingly, the team that has $2300 to spend, only spends $800. Whaaat? "Guillermo kept shouting about longer stem and Derek couldn't find any of the flowers he was looking for. The Los Angeles Flower Market looks like a labyrinth of death. I think I saw David Bowie hiding behind one of the rhododendron bushes."

'Trash the Dress' - An idea whose time has come?

Trash the dress, also known as fearless bridal or rock the frock, is a style of wedding photography that contrasts elegant clothing with an environment in which it is out of place. It is generally shot in the style of fashion and glamour photography.

Usually brides decide to have pictures taken on a beach, but other locations include city streets, rooftops, garbage dumps, fields, and abandoned buildings.

Some sources claim that the trend was originally started in 2001 by Las Vegas wedding photographer John Michael Cooper. However, the idea of destroying a wedding dress has been used in Hollywood symbolically since at least October 1998 when Meg Cummings of the show Sunset Beach ran into the ocean in her wedding dress after her wedding was badly interrupted. Since then the style has spread around the world and most notably in the UK, with photographers like Steve Gerrard and Mark Theisinger, amongst others, shoot their unique ideas of Trash the Dress.

A model often wears a ball gown, prom dress or wedding dress, and may effectively ruin the dress in the process by getting it wet, dirty or in extreme circumstances tearing or destroying the garment.

It may be done as an additional shoot after the wedding, almost as a declaration that the wedding is done and the dress will not be used again. It is seen as an alternative to storing the dress away, never to be seen again.
