How to Add a Custom Tab to a Facebook Page

Ranked #353 in Internet, #15,335 overall

Need a Custom Tab or Website within a Facebook Business Page?

Facebook is great as a gathering place for your customers or fans. The default tabs are limited in providing content and links. If you would like to add an email sign up form, links, general content etc and amazing features have replaced the old Static FBML (Facebook Markup Language) app. This allows you to use HTML tags to format content. Even if you are not a coding whiz, there are several links in this article to some simple HTML tags or ways to generate HTML coding that will spruce up your page.

The latest technology allows you to build full websites into your facebook site for free.

NOTES/UPDATES:

On March 30, 2012 facebook pages will change over to the new timeline style format. You can make appropriate changes and pre-test them before they go live. For those with multiple links in their sidebar, you may need to make a few adjustments as toolbar displays about 4 images and the remainder fall into a drop down box. Extra links such as events, newsletter sign ups, webpages, photos that were easily visible may not be as obvious to individuals visiting your page.

February 2012 The old Static FBML app is no longer relevant and has been replaced with newer technology such as the iwipa app.

As of February 2011 if you create a new business page or upgrade your business page the tabs will now display on the side instead of across the top.

On August 23, 2010 facebook is making some changes to the custom tabs to help eliminate some of the complexity. For more information visit Profile and Page Roadmap Update
Here is an excerpt. "Application Tabs. Next week, we will give Page admins the ability to preview their custom tabs in the new 520 pixel width so they can modify their layouts as needed. All profile and Page tabs will be resized automatically beginning the week of August 23."

Pages are Changing

But maybe for the better. This Linkedin article titled 7 New Facebook Changes Impacting Business will tell you why.

About Custom Tabs

Stella and Dot by Jennie HFacebook has several links on every page which includes Wall, Info, Photos, Discussions to name a few. But there may be content that you want to add that is specific to you or your line of business. You can do this by adding an app such as iwipa, or Constant Contact sign up to your facebook page.

On March 30, 2012 all pages will move over to the new timeline format. In the current format, all the links are on the left side of the page. In the new format all the links are at the top of the page. The timeline format has a little less real estate so when you convert over, make sure you set the links you want people to see the most in the first four links otherwise they fall into a drop down category.

Three examples of personal Facebook Pages I have developed:

  • Fundraising Opportunities - An example of using HTML to design an information page.
  • Non-Profit Collected/Payouts
  • Welcome!

USA Fit Albany
  • Join My Lists - Constant Contact newsletter join list

Tip!

If you have 25 or more fans on your fan page you can give your page a custom name!

Many businesses now rely on Facebook pages as a primary business channel.
As a part-time freelance, I've had a countless number of fan page projects sent to me.
I do not consider myself an amatuer in the realm of programming, but, still, I find these jobs a daunting task.
At times, the unpredictability nature of the final output (when viewed on different browsers) haunts me in my sleep... ummm ... ok, I admit... not as much as images of my ex, but still.
It's beyond one's comprehension how many startup's are looking to have their pages up everyday.
I've seen apps that allow users to build pages by asking them to select page contents from a list of available few features, but that means you're restrained to a limited number of options.
I'm not even remotely close to being a world-renowned computer scientist, nor am I Richie Rich, but I still want to dedicate myself to doing something for others. And, that is The Rise of the Empire, oh... umm... I meant this site http://www.propplan.com/#!/propplan/home/Facebook...

Now, you can stop worrying about the escrow amount or the total cost of your page. Propplan invites you to create page tabs for free.
Design your page on Propplan and have it published as a tab on your fan page immediately.
To maximize consumer engagement, all elements placed on your page can be assigned a redirect link and animation.
    Have fun!!!
