Custom Dog Houses - Luxury Dog House/Kennels - Duplex Dog Houses

Looking for a custom dog house? Purchasing a custom dog house rather than an off shelf product gives your new dog or current dog or dogs the comfort they are worthy of!
So what exactly is a custom house? Rather than purchasing an off the shelf house, custom dog houses are constructed with various options in mind, such as insulation, climate control units (air conditioning & heating), various siding options, roofing options, single or duplex houses.

Cedars are a preferred choice as ornamental trees, often used in horticulture in temperate climates where winter temperatures do not fall below about minus 25 °C. The Turkish Cedar is slightly hardier, to minus 30 °C or just below. The survival rate of planted specimens can be affected in severe winters where temperatures do drop lower. Geographical areas with successful long-term cultivation include the Mediterranean region, Western Europe north to the British Isles, southern Australia and New Zealand, and southern and western North America.

Another characteristic is their durable, decay resistant scented wood, the famous use in past history is the construction of King Solomon's temple in Jerusalem provided by King Hiram, or Ahiram, of Tyre, Lebanon, circa 1000 BC. The cedar wood is also used for home construction because it is resistance to weather, for shakes and shingles. Cedar wood and cedar oil is a natural repellent to moths; therefore hope chests were made of cedar when available. Cedar is a popular lining for modern-day closets in which woolens are stored.

Its resistance to insects makes the cedar an excellent choice for custom cedar dog houses. The properties of the wood make it safe for pets and it is resistant to decay as well. With minimal care and some wood preservatives cedar custom dog houses can last for several years, providing a safe comfortable home for your dog.

When it is time to purchase an outside home for your families pet it may be difficult to find exactly the right dog house. While there are a variety dog house designs currently available and affordable many of them are cut from the same mold and model. Rather than invest in a dog house that looks the same as every other dog house in the neighborhood many pet owners opt for something that is original, unique, and suits their dogs' personality and their backyard decor. Instead of spending weeks shopping for the perfect dog house pet owners are now choosing custom built dog houses.
The idea of building a customized home for a dog might be a new concept to a few people, especially those who have never owned a dog, but the idea has become extremely popular in many areas because it saves time and in many cases money.

Cedar Duplex Dog Houses

Do you have 2 dogs in the family? Do you want your special dogs to have something that is as unique as they are? Then you may want to consider a cedar duplex dog house. There are a variety of reasons why it is the ideal for your special friend.

One of the important elements things you should consider about cedar dog houses is that they are very practical. Instead of looking at it as a luxury item, noting all of the practical aspects of these duplex dog houses will help you to see why your dog deserves one.

When you provide your dogs with a cedar duplex dog house, you will be giving them a very healthy and comfortable environment. First, cedar is one of the most desired wood materials you can find. In addition to the natural healthful state of cedar itself, it also stays cleaner longer and is easier to clean than most other types of materials. The freshness and cleanliness is made even better with the mild scent of cedar wood.

The cedar duplex dog house is also the right size for 2 dogs. No matter what size your dogs happen to be, they can have a dog house in the dimensions that are perfect for them. They can stretch out to rest, escape from the weather elements, and have their meals, all in plenty of room.

Duplex dog houses are a unique design that combines two dog houses. Duplex dog houses are basically one house with two separate entrances and living spaces with a removable divider. This allows each of your dogs their own space where they can rest in comfort protected from the elements. Also, duplex dog houses can be much more visually appealing to the pet owners who have to choose between a duplex dog house and purchasing two separate dog houses.

Custom duplex dog houses may cost more compared to the average, ready made, dog houses available on the market. While price and budgets should always be taken into consideration, the old adage "you get what you pay for" comes to mind.
Do you desire something that looks cheap taking up a good deal of space in your back yard? Having a custom duplex dog house will be well worth the investment.

Cedar Dog Houses

Cedar Dog Houses
Remember the cedar chest grandma kept her "special" stuff in? The strategy of course was to deter moths and other insects, the distinct smell of cedar is what I remembered most and my prying eyes seeking out the precious treasures kept there. Cedar wood has several different useful applications especially when it comes to our family pet. The cedar dog house is naturally resistant to bugs and rot, making it an excellent choice for our extended family housing issue.....because ...Pets are family!

Custom built cedar dog houses delivered to your front door.

Like us dogs need to have a comfortable, safe, place to go at the end of an active day filled with work or play. To provide your beloved dog with a comfy place to relax that is their own you must take the time to invest in, or constructing dog houses.
Constructing a house from scratch can be a daunting job, especially if you have limited or no building experience or the tools necessary for the job. In addition to being a challenge it can also be expensive if you do not have the skills. Purchasing the materials such as wood, paint, insulation, and all the tools necessary for the construction can be very expensive, especially if you purchase some of the wrong materials. In order to save time and money (in some cases) it is in the best interest of many pet owners to have custom dog houses designed by companies that specialize in dog house construction.
While there are variety of building materials available the preferred material is cedar. These homes are beautifully designed and a custom cedar dog house can be a wonderful addition to any backyard. These luxury dog houses come in a wide variety of options in terms of size, and even duplex dog houses if you have two dogs.
Custom cedar dog houses are constructed by utilizing full cedar framing and raised cedar floors that allow air to circulate and benefit decay. This framing is solid and will stand firm in a variety of harsh weather elements providing your dog with security, comfort and safety. Luxury Dog Houses

Luxury Dog Houses
DIY luxury dog house kits that feature a dog house and kennel area in the style of a Cape Cod or Victorian home.

Would you like the ultimate living area for your pet?

In regards to a dog house & kennel combination, what options are available? If it's not a tethered chain or a chainlink/board fence, it's standard dog houses. Sure, a basic type dog house will keep your dog protected from bad weather (to a degree), but even for small dogs, the accommodations are miniscule. The dog won't be able to run around or play, as there just isn't enough room.
That's why many dog owners are considering another dog house & kennel combination: a luxury dog house. Well, the concept is similar to standard dog houses, as they offer shelter to protect the dog from the elements. However, they achieve this objective in a much more creative way,
these include one-story homes designed with Victorian or Cape Cod architecture.
The inside of these houses/kennels offer more space than any dog house & kennel combination you may have known about. Your dog will have as much freedom as he had indoors, as he will have plenty of room to run around and be able to engage with their surroundings.
Things can get even more interesting with luxury dog houses. At the back of the house, there is a fenced in area that acts like a 'doggy porch.' The dog will be able to enjoy the outside without any worries over whether or not they will run away. And, when the weather gets worse, they can always go back inside to get away from the harsh elements.
You can make luxury dog houses even more effective if you install climate control unit within the housing unit. This will allow your dog to use the house even during harsher conditions, though take caution if there are extreme situations. Even though these units are very effective, if there is a heat wave or a blizzard, your dog will be safest in their home. In conclusion, if you're interested in a dog house & kennel combination that is as effective as it is stylish, consider getting a luxury dog house. They are pricier than traditional dog houses, but they are much bigger and cuter. Plus, their design will allow the dog to feel as if they finally have a space of their own.

Every dog owner knows that their dog requires good shelter when they are outside from the summer heat, the winter cold, and other harsh elements, but many well meaning dog owners invest in dog houses that are not adequately insulated for the climate in which they reside. If you live in a climate that has temperature extremes be it summer or winter, a safe and comfortable home for your pet is an insulated dog house. It is important to invest in a dog house that addresses the climate in which you reside; otherwise your pet may be subjected to the heat of the summer or cold of the winter. There are several different materials used to make custom dog houses, and some are manufactured with insulation and others are not.

Insulated dog houses will maintain the temperate from rising to extremes inside the house during the summer by reflecting the sun's heat. Likewise in the winter, the insulation will prevent the dog house form getting too frigid by retaining in your dog's body heat. Insulated dog houses are manufactured in all shapes and sizes, from the extra large dog houses, to duplex dog houses so you will easily be able to find one that suit the needs of your dog.

Plastic dog houses may be cheap and easy to get however plastic is not the best material for an insulated dog house. Plastic does not retain the heat well and does not protect against the sun as well as insulated wood materials.

Wood is the more popular materials for dog houses and it is also the perfect choice for insulation purposes. Wood is a natural insulator and when combined with a layer of insulation it does an excellent job of keeping the inside of the dog house at a comfortable temperature. There are a variety of wood materials used to make dog houses and most are suitable for insulation purposes. Cedar wood is usually the most durable and is naturally insect resistant. You can find cedar dog houses in any shape and size to suit the needs of your dog and it is also easy to find insulated dog houses that are manufactured with insulation already installed.

Extra Large Dog Houses

There are big and bigger and then there are Mastiff size dogs!

Some of the building materials include wood products like ¾ inch solid Douglas Fur siding not Asian Fur like many lower priced dog houses are made of. Also using high quality cedar products like Western Red Cedar adds up to a quality doghouse that will last many, many years.
Cedar dog houses are naturally resistant to insects and have a wonderful aromatic fragrance. Couple that with a insulation package and a climate control unit and you have the perfect home for your dog regardless of the climate!

So fear not if you have a large breed dog or dogs that need a new home, there is an option available for you and your pet. Because pets are family!

It Is No Mystery Why We Love Our Dogs!

Have you witnessed a stroll in the park with the baby carriage that would bring out the ahhhh's? Well those ahhhhhh's are now directed just as much to a new puppy as they are to the new born baby. Dogs give us unconditional love no matter how grumpy we may be, they will still show up with a wagging tail to greet us. Can we say the same about our human counterparts? Maybe, We love to pamper our dogs The pet industry is a billion dollar a year industry, there is nothing that you can't find to pamper your pet. From designer dog clothing to custom dog houses with heating/air conditioning, even a deck and porch option. Love me love my dog. We would rather give up a relationship with certain individuals than with our dogs. Perhaps it is because there is no better form of loyalty and affection, or perhaps we view our dogs differently now than in the past. Whatever the case may be until we can prove the same loyalties the balance of importance may be long in coming. At your service! Dogs have been trained to lead blind or visually impaired people, assist law enforcement agencies, and the branches of the military for years. In most countries, guide dogs, including most service and hearing dogs, are exempt from the regulations regarding the presence of dogs in public places. There are hotels and restaurants that cater to the dogs and their owners, supply the necessary amenities that both have become fond of. And action! Hollywood has not over looked the canine appeal and has featured several movies and animations in the past/present that have done very well at the box office because of our infatuation with our dogs. From talking dogs, to rescue dogs, the motion picture industry has used the silver screen to foster our appeal for mans' best friend.

Our Dogs & Abandonment Issues

We recently were chosen to parent a street dog here where we live in Costa Rica. She would arrive at our door because we'd leave out fresh water for any animals. Her frame was painfully thin, her eyes cloudy, her tail limp and very nervous. When you could get close enough to touch her or pet her she would moan with pleasure. She had never been shown affection let alone have her basic needs attended too. Over time, gradually increasing her food intake, teaching her to walk on a leash, numerous trips to the Vets for vitamins and shots we have a pet that is easily one of the BEST dogs we could ever have for part of our family. Only one small characteristic exists that she bears as a scar from her past, separation anxiety.
I know several people with pets that have issues with being left alone. While I am not an expert I have done some extensive reading and thought I would share some of my findings. Dogs are very social animals, we know that. They want to be near people and when left alone they fear they are being abandoned. In our case this is clearly a result of her past experiences and others with 'adopted' dogs that have been with other families or a shelter may come across this as well, are they going to be left behind again. This fear can also develop if there is a radical change in routine. Were you previously at home all the time and now you are gone all day? New house? New baby or other pets? They are no longer the sole focus of your attention then.
Before you assign them the label of having separation anxiety it is wise to check first that your dog is in good health. There could be a physical problem that is causing the stress. A poor diet can affect behaviour as well. Anytime their behaviour changes it would be wise to consult a Vet to make sure it is not a result of a physical issue. Check their environment. Is there something in their 'space' that is making them anxious? Too hot, too cold, a smell, a noise, or perhaps another dog whimpering, growling, barking is setting them off.
Symptoms of Separation Anxiety will differ from dog to dog. Destructive behaviour tops the list of what you may see. Keep in mind this is not your dog seeking revenge or attempting to be 'bad' it is there reaction to anxiety. They may chew things, they may chew at themselves. They may bark, whimper or howl for hours on end. They may piddle or relieve themselves in the house not because they are not housebroken but because of the stress of being left alone.
If you get a dog as a puppy you can teach them to accept being alone, and again a lot of articles do recommend crate training. I have not tried this with a puppy as I tend to get older dogs so I can't comment on it except that experts seem to be all in favour of it. By getting them accustomed to some down time alone when they are young you can avoid the anxiety issues. However if you routine changes this anxiety can develop in any breed of dog at any age.
The first suggestion to help deal with this seems obvious, extremely critical and often the one overlooked, exercise. Spending time with your dog on a long walk, especially before you need to leave them eliminates the built up energy (physical and mental) and could help your pet rest more comfortable while you need to be gone. With people balancing kids, jobs, activities etc, the family dog seems to be getting fatter and fatter. You've accepted the role of being responsible for this loving creature some time together for them will make them happy. Opening up the back door to let them piddle and run back in is NOT exercise for either of you!
Trial runs for a short time before a 'drastic' change may lesson their anxiety as well. Leave them for a few minutes and return. Gradually extend the period you are gone. Mix up your routine so they do not panic when you go to one specific door or reach for your coat in the closet. Move things around, leave from another door. In almost every article they continually emphasize that you need to reward the good behaviour and ignore the bad. If you come home and they are frantic with excitement just calmly hang up your coat, put away your groceries, and take a minute or two before you address the dog. When you do, keep things calm and relaxed. A quiet low voice, lessen eye contact for a few minutes. So I was gone for a while? No big deal! In time the dog may adapt to that way of thinking as well.
You are working to eliminate the things that can cause them stress. After the trial runs of leaving - they know you are coming back. The goal is that in time they won't know if you've been gone for a 2 minutes or 2 hours in time. Getting rid of excess energy ahead of time was addressed early as well as making sure they are in good physical condition. Checking their environment for stressors sounds, smells, temperature are they comfortable? Do they have a full stomach? Make sure they are fed or being hungry becomes a stressor. A familiar toy left for them a treat hidden inside of it, the radio or TV on so they hear voices.
Taking the fear out of being alone can be quite challenging and needs time and patience. It's usually achievable with time in many cases in other extreme cases there are some medications that Vets may suggest or you may need to visit a professional trainer to assist in behaviour modification. Consult a professional if necessary the key to the dog's happiness and yours may be just a phone call away. Remember, they are not lashing out; they are uncomfortable, afraid and anxious.

For Your Next Dog Think Adoption!

When you consider the number of dogs that are put to sleep each year because they can't fins a home, it can make your heart break. With all the dogs placed up for adoption out there, many people still do not consider these lovable pets in need. Many still go to commercial breeders (not that there is anything wrong with them) when a brief stop by the Humane Society or some other animal rescue could save the life of a dog and they have a treasured companion.
There are vast amounts of dogs ready for adoption in your own home town area, and it doesn't require much work to find a dog in need of a good home. Begin your search with your local newspaper; often due to circumstances beyond their control dog owners are forced to give up a pet. This is traumatic enough, but if they are going to a good and loving home where they will be well cared for the change will be a little less heart breaking.Another place to consider is the Humane Society, if not the first. There never seems to be a shortage of wonderful dogs that would make a wonderful lifelong companion, as if they can sense the urgency."Pick me and I will be a loyal companion for the rest of my days out of shear grateful for giving me a new lease on life"
There needs to be more importance put on the fact that we should be adopting a dog, for the sake of the pet and not necessarily our own selfish needs. Taking a pet home to place in the backyard as an ornament and not interact with it is just another form of cruelty. Put in the same situation if we are rejected by our family, or loved ones it doesn't take long for it to have a major impact on our lives.
It is hard to justify buying a pet when there are so many dogs that are abandoned every year. Many people are too lazy, busy or irresponsible to pay or neuter their pets, while others adopt a dog only to abandon it a year or two later when it is no longer a puppy. Because of this, many unwanted dogs are put to sleep instead of getting to live full lives in a caring home.
Lastly providing proper shelter via a custom dog house or other means of protection for your pet is also an important consideration. Taking in to account your lifestyle and how often you pet will be home alone and their needs.

Tips To Consider When Purchasing Your Next Dog House

At the risk of sounding "duh" when selecting a dog house you need to consider your dog's type, size, personality, and of course how much you want to invest, taking into consideration that the cost of a specialist to build a house may be far more expensive than a custom built home delivered to your front door

The house should be large enough to allow your dog to turn around and stretch their legs fully while lying inside it, also the smaller the house the more efficient it will be to cool and heat.

Your pet may feel isolated in a house that is too large, take a clue from other canine related animals; they prefer the coziness of a den.

Insulated dog houses that feature an air conditioner/heater unit is an added bonus because your pet will be comfortable year round and the insulation increases the efficiency of the air conditioner/heater unit.

The types of building materials are important as well, for longevity and comfort of your pet. For example cedar built dog houses are naturally resistant to decay and insects. It is also a good idea to look for a house that is raised off the ground a few inches to allow circulation under the dog house.

Providing your pet with a form fitted bed will help ease the pressure points on their body as they are resting, especially if your dog is getting older.

Can You Say Road Trip?

So you are embarking on a long awaited road trip but you don't want to leave your beloved pet behind, well don't! Here are 7 tips for traveling with your pet.
1. If you are going to be using those frequent flier miles make sure (well in advance) that you know the guidlines of the airline you are using.
2. If you are going to be in the car a long time your pet is going to need to get out and stretch, make sure you have a leash and collar.
3. Make sure you have plenty of drinking water for your pets, even if you do have air conditioning.
4. You may want to check out the accommodations for lodging in advance and see which ones are "pet friendly" not wise to assume.
5. It may be a good idea to have the phone number and address of the vet that is at your final destination, especially if you have an animal that may have some health issues.
6. You may consider taking your pet on short trips around town before hitting the open road on a 1000 mile trip.
7. Make sure your pet has proper ID just in case there is a mishap and they get lost.

Ruler Of Your Domain?

So what does your dog do while you're busting your buttocks at work, grocery shopping, playing taxi, getting in a round of golf, or whatever? A recent survey suggested that most dogs are enjoying the comforts of your home, yes your house! Approximately 70% of dog owners claim their dogs spend a good portion of their time hanging around indoors. What else are they up to? Ruff-ly (sorry had to do it) 66% of American dog owners contend their canines lounge their day away, while roughly 9% imagined their pets playing and romping (romping?) with toys. That same survey, compiled by Ipsos Public Affairs on behalf of Purina Little Bites Indoor Complete brand, indicated that many dogs have carte blanche when it comes to the house. More than a 1/3 of dog owners allow their pets into every room in the house, as long as they obey certain rules, while almost 30% of dog owners allow their precious pets free reign and run rap "pet" (once again sorry) throughout the entire house.

Interesting Tidbits About Dogs

A Queensland heeler from Victoria Australia lived to be 29 years and 5 months, old making it the oldest recorded age of a dog. Normal life expectancy is 15 years of age.

From the long term releationship department. Humans have been keeping dogs as their pets for the past 12,000 years.
That is a lot of tag wagging!

Can I have my finger back? The average dog's mouth can apply 150 to 200 pounds of pressure per square inch. Some breeds can apply up to 450 pounds! Ouch!

Who needs a watch? Your dog's internal clock is really amazing. If you are on a fairly normal schedule your dog knows when it's time for you to arrive home, feed them, or go to bed.

Your dog is loyal not because you feed them, but because of the companionship and love you give them.

Is it hot in here or is it just me? Your dog's nose is not just used for smelling, it also keeps them cool. That's why your dog pants. The longer the dog's nose, the better their cooling system works. Sorry Pugs keep panting.

Dogs Our Buddies

You know how the centuries old saying goes, "dog is man's best friend", well, so true! Dogs and humans have been side by side for centuries, so it is no wonder we became good buddies! Some dogs may seem loud, dirty at times, and messy with their digging habits, stealing hamburgers off the bbq grill, harboring fleas (for some), worms, and ticks. Dogs have to trasined to understand that outdoors is the proper place to do their business, and then it has to be cleaned up (the not so fun part of dog ownership). Dogs need regular meals, plenty of fresh water, occasional bathing, brushing their coats, and of couirse lots of exercise. Daily walks or runs and ball tossing are all part of the routine to keep your dog healthy and happy, which makes for a happy family. Our pets must also have regular health check ups and shots (hate this part) by a vet. What do you do when you go on a vacation? You either arrange for your dog to travel comfortably with you or be cared for by a trusting friend or reliable dog sitting service.

The responsibility of pet ownership can not be taken lightly. Owners are liable for their care, and through it all, the bond between humans and their dog is stronger than ever. Over two billion dollars a year is what people spend on their pets, and in 5 years it is estimated that people will shell out over eight billion a year without batting an eye. Our canine buddies offer us so much, along with their unconditional love, so pampering them simply shows gratitude to man's best friend.

A well cared for dog will go to extreme measures to protect their human friends. A Chihuahua has been known to take on a rattlesnake to protect a family member. Brave canines sniff out disaster victims in rubble, or snow where no human could ever find them. The incredible life saving stories about our super sniffing canines number in the thousands and grows daily. Numerous people are grateful because they are alive today due to unrelenting efforts of a fearless dog.
Visually impaired and hearing impaired individuals benefit from dogs who have been guiding them for decades. Canines assist people with debilitating diseases, illnesses, and severe anxieties. Children and adults often become calm when a dog is present, especially those with autism, bi-polar disorders, and other life challenges. The simple action of petting a dog can cause a human to relax, which in turn lowers blood pressure and heart rate. One of the best known instinctive acts the majority of dogs do is warn us with their barks when someone approaches our home or an intruder enters.
More than ever before, we treat our pets like family, giving them shelter and even sleeping in our beds. This is pretty much the norm for most dog loving families. Dog owners pamper their dogs to the highest degree, buying them the trendiest clothing, custom built dog houses, toys, and trips to the doggie salon. We install safety apparatus and hammocks for our dogs in our cars, and we tend to feed them only top of the line dog foods and gourmet treats.

We are grateful each day for our dog's love, companionship, and unique personality. Adore your dogs, and they will adore you.

Dogs That Provide A Service

GUIDE DOGS
Guide Dogs are used to make life easier for individuals that may have some element of their lives that gives them some restrictions or limitations. These Dogs are carefully and professionally trained to help bridge any gap and make it possible for their owners to have a lessoned impact from there restrictions. Initially we think of these Dogs to assist those that are blind however their role has evolved far beyond that.
Guide Dogs have legal access rights to and all public places. Mobility and independence are their key functions. They give their handlers the ability to move freely in places where they may have previously struggled, avoiding obstacles, negotiating traffic, finding doorways, steps, chairs to sit on and much more.
These dogs are 'working dogs' not pets and people should make an effort not in interfere with them doing their 'jobs'. Typically they will wear a harness to allow you to easily identify that they are acting as guide. To distract them could divert there attention from their work and could potentially open the handler up to a risky or even dangerous situation. Please approach the handler and ask for permission to make contact with the dog.
The dogs selected for this type of work are ones that have calm and quiet dispositions with some initiative and the ability to focus carefully on the task at hand. These dogs will have a strong desire to please their handler and within that relationship they will also provide things they cannot be measured and that is their love and companionship.

AIRPORT SECURITY DOGS
The Transportation Safety commission (TSA), as a direct result of the terrorist attacks on 9/11 have increased the use of K-9 teams in airports wherever possible. The existence of this highly trained Dogs with the ability to sniff out what humans or x-ray machines can't is not 'new' to security at all, however having increased numbers of these teams is critical to the safety of all, passengers and flight crew, during any voyage. Their keen sense of smell to pick up firearms as well as products used in the making, manufacturing or existence of explosives is their key function.
These dogs may not be visible as you passed through airport security at times. They may be on the tarmac near the baggage, roaming the parking lots checking out vehicles or you may even see them during check in but believe me, they are there. When it comes to the existence of fire arms and explosives there can be no room for error at all. People should get used to seeing them and appreciate it means additional safety measures, not see them and wonder 'what's wrong?'
These Detection Dogs will begin there training at the age of two and in most cases perform service for approximately 7 years. The dog of preference is the Labrador however there are some additional breeds and cross breeds used as well. Research indicates that up to one-eighth of a dog's brain and over 50 per cent of the internal nose is dedicated to its sense of smell. It is estimated that humans have five million sensory cells inside their noses, while a Labrador has 220 million. Any dog chosen for this line of work will be one that exhibits extreme intelligence and they need to be quick to recognize any repetition in their training. The handlers of these important Airport employees must also be fit individuals with a high level of commitment and motivation. They must maintain a training program that offers the canines a constant variety in their recall tasks to challenge them and keep them at the top of their game.

MILITARY DOGS
Making their debut in the Military, Dogs were used as Ambulance or 'Red Cross Dogs' carrying supplies and messages between locations as well as being harnessed to machine guns that were on a type of wagon with wheels - the dogs made these somewhat 'portable'. The Germans reportedly used over 30,000 dogs in these types of roles during World War I. The US however only had sled dog teams as the only form of 'working dog' during this time period.
Realizing the value of these highly skilled and highly intelligent animals the US worked on training for more formal Military use and by 1945 had over 10,000 dogs trained for 'service' in the Army, Navy, Marine Corp. And coast guard. During World War II there were 15 War Dog Platoons serving overseas for the US Military. The dogs of choice were the Labradors and Dobermans because of their keen sense of smell.
Currently Military working dogs are in much shorter supply. In 2004 it is reported that there were only approximately 2,300 Dogs were in teams serving the US Department of Defence. The teams are a very important part of the ongoing U.S. missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. They devote many hours to their Jobs and guard duty is one for their current basic functions. In present day however their responsibilities have broadened to include base security, individual and crowd control, tracking, and being able to detect explosive and narcotics. Most of the dogs used are trained first as police dogs then they train for specialty skills, like being able to detect bombs.
Military Working Dogs in Iraq and Afghanistan perform their duties in extreme heat and sandstorms just like their handlers and every other soldier ... our four legged soldiers are skilled, highly trained and with their handler by their side these teams are dedicated to serving the US Department of Defence.

HERDING DOGS
The desire to work is strong for this group of Dogs. They are full of energy and have a need to constantly be on the 'go'. This level of energy means they are happiest when they are doing what they were 'bred' to go - rounding up something, anything ... could be a herd of sheep or cows, a group of children or even the neighbourhood cats - just keep them working. They can become rather destructive when they grow bored and are not challenged. Really no different than humans, we are typically at our best when we are doing what we feel we are good at and what we get some satisfaction out of.
The term livestock guarding dogs has also been used for this type of working canine. They can be trained to guard goats, cattle or sheep or through the years certain breeds have been used for certain types of livestock. This has resulted in the breed developing some characteristics that give them an 'edge' , a kind of enhanced working ability in protecting their flock from predators and theft.
Many different varieties of dogs have been used for herding purposes including ( but not limited to) the Australian shepherd, German Shepherd, Collies, Border Collies, Newfoundland, Old English Sheepdogs and even smaller breeds like the Corgi's. The small breeds are used when they need to stay out of range of being kicked by their herd. Whether large or small these animals have speed and endurance when they need to hold, drive and protect livestock.
Livestock or Herding dogs are introduced to the animals they are to protect as puppies so they "imprint" on the animals. This imprinting occurs between 3 and 16 weeks of age and must be done with the animals they will be protecting as adult dogs. This imprinting is critical because the herding dogs learn to behave in a non-predatory and protective way with the specific animal species they have been raised with. Proper socialization and instinct are the key elements to having an effective herding dog, unlike most working dogs that require training.

FBI DOGS
The dogs in the FBI are trained continuously. Even after they have been through an initial intensive training program the FBI employees are kept up with all the latest and greatest training to make sure they can perform their jobs to their fullest potential. The handler of these working dogs is a key element to making sure their up to date with any and all of the training available. With their roles changing as the elements they are faced with change, they need to be set up to locate anything. The dogs and handlers have a close relationship and become members of their family - the trust they have for each other is key to learning on both sides.
At FBI Headquarters they have animals that 'specialize' in different areas. Chemical Explosives Dog is to sniff out bombs, explosion debris, firearms, and ammunition. Other FBI Working Dogs are trained to find drugs, money, and to track people as well. These functions can all be critical in the field and these dogs are a valuable asset to any team they may be a part of.
With the dogs keen sense of smell and their instinctive ability to find things they are doing what they were born to do. Have you ever tried hiding food, a dog treat, or a dog toy on your pet? Something they are not supposed to get into is usually the first thing they find. They are applying these skills in a constructive way and to locate thing in a variety of settings: in the woods or a field, in a suitcase, in a car, on a street, in a closet, under rubble, in the water or under even under the snow too.

SLED DOGS
Mush!
Sled Dogs are working dogs that endure the extreme cold. Their presence in the Polar Regions was historically critical for protection, companionship, hunting, trapping and transport of good and transportation as well. Explorers relied on them for transportation across frozen wastelands that stretched for miles. The settlements of people inland; with no access to waterways, relied on them for freight hauling. Dating back to 1873 the Royal Canadian Mounted Police used dog teams to patrol in the northern regions and later the dog teams were used as mail runners as well.
These dogs would require a thick fur coat to tolerate the cold as well as the physical strength to pull the sled and the endurance to travel distances. Several distinct dog breeds are commonly used as sled dogs, however many other any medium-sized breed can be used to pull a sled. The most common purebred dogs would be the well-known Siberian husky and Alaskan malamute .
The need has decreased for these Dogs to be used as methods of transport and transportation in most areas, but they are still used for sled racing. This function means that for these working canines speed and endurance play key roles. Driving sled dogs has become a popular winter recreation and sport in North America as well as Europe. This sport has even spread where sledding can be found in such unlikely places as Australia.

GUARD DOGS
Their Bark May be Worse than their Bite
Guard dogs by definition are dogs that are used guarding property or people against people or even the attack of other animals. They have also been referred to as Watch Dogs or Sentry Dogs and are trained to bark to alert someone to the presences of some form of intruder.
So what characteristics would a 'good' guard dog need? There is a need for them to be 'territorial' and aggressive when the situation dictates. Larger breed dogs with some bulk and stature will be physically stronger and without even using their strength will appear more 'intimidating' in the role of protector. A dog that is courageous and does not give in to a counter attack is also a desired characteristic. You don't want a dog that has a fearless, aggressive bark but runs and hides with their tail between their legs when they are confronted by an intruder.
Some of the dogs that are commonly trained and used for guarding duty include the Mastiff, Bull Mastiff, Dobermans, Rottweiler, German Shepherd, Giant Schnauzer and American Staffordshire and Chow Chows to list just a few of the 'top' candidates. Some dogs like the Rhodesian Ridgebacks and Weimaraner were actually bred as hunting dogs however their size, strength and instincts to be protective of their territory have seen them evolve into the role of Guard Dog quite naturally.
Depending on the employers needs the dogs can be trained to warn, or to restrain the unwanted guests. When it comes to 'warning' I was surprised to find out about other species that actually work incredibly effectively to ALERT someone to the presence of intruders... would you believe that geese will be loud and aggressive when their space is infringed upon. I would not have believed it had I not seen and heard a yard full of geese expressing some concern when a dog came up to their gate. However a yard full of geese may not be practical or work well if the intruder needs to be restrained.
Dogs trained to attack are commonly illegal in many areas so the key function is still as an early warning system. Several species work very effectively to alert their owners with loud threatening sounding barks however are not aggressive and will not likely attack. It is also generally believed that the females whose maternal instincts are thought to make them better to guard people and the males who have a stronger sense of territory are better to guard property.

DOG HEROES
We will all likely remember stories of the Dogs that served after 9/11 going through the rubble in hopes of finding survivors. More than 350 search and rescue dogs went to work, and like all those eyes watching - they too were hoping for signs of life. This was one of the largest deployments of dogs in US history as well as being the largest inter species cooperative search and rescue efforts. Sadly we all know that despite these teams working around the clock - a grim outcome was sadly to be faced at the site of the World Trade Center.
Dogs have played a role in some amazing heroic actions through the centuries. Going back to 1925 in Nome Alaska a Diphtheria epidemic broke out with the serum to cure 600 miles away on dangerous stretch of land in a blinding blizzard. The town was facing imminent disaster when Leonard Seppala strapped together 20 huskies to ensure the storm and travel some 300 miles where he met with another dog sled team to complete the mission. They were all hero's that saved the town of Nome.
Monks stationed near the Swiss-Italian border wanted to breed a dog that was capable of finding a saving people who lost their way through the difficult pass. They did their job when the St. Bernard breed came into existence. In that area the famous canine that was honoured for saving over 40 lives was Barry. This breed's ability to smell out a human over 2 miles away or buried under 10 feet of snow make this possible.
Stubby, a Pit Bull achieved the rank of Sergeant during World War I after serving in 17 battles. He was the most highly decorated dog in War history. In World War II, a mixed breed named Chips took home a Silver Star and a Purple Heart after serving in 8 different war campaigns.
More recently - in 2001 a Florida women fell behind her house when her Dog had to fight off an Alligator to protect and save her the went for help . Another dog pulling his owner from a burning car or a dog alerting someone to a fire alarm they may not hear, or carbon monoxide detector alarm they may be sleeping through. Just last week in the news a dog trained to service a man who suffered from seizures called 911 for help when his owner was incapacitated and saved his life.
The stories are endless and we will forever hear more and more surprising tales of how these trained and intelligent animals can serve and protect, as well as be a loving and loyal companion.

THERAPY DOGS
When all you need is Love
When we think of 'working dogs' our thoughts tend to go to dogs specially trained to assist people who have some kind of limitations or restrictions where a four legged friend can help to make their daily routines much easier or to assist Police, Military, Search and Rescue or be employed to guard and protect. There is another group of working dog with a job no less important but we hear of far less often. They have the job of being a friend, a happy face, giving their unconditional love and comfort. These dogs have the job title: Therapy Dogs. They are introduced into situations where there is extreme stress. An example of this would be after some kind of loss or disaster. A therapy Dog could be in a School, Hospital or brought into a Nursing homes or mental institution.
As Therapy dogs go, there is no profile to dictate the shape, size or strength required. Their function is to provide comfort and having a good temperament, being calm and friendly are the only things needed on their resume. Physical contact is key to their job. Children need to be able to throw their arms around them and hug them, and adults will find them a calming influence just by petting them or having the dog rest their head on their legs and making that physical contact. Small dogs can be lifted up and sit in a persons lap. Some of these dogs may extend their repertoire by performing tricks for their audience or even playing some games.
There is an interesting history on the Therapy Dog dating back to World War II. A young soldier found a small terrier abandoned on a battlefield. She was named Smoky and quickly became a companion to the soldier and his entire division. The dog served a function on day to run a line through 70 feet of pipe responding to his owners, Corporal Wynne's call. This saved his team from moving 40 aircrafts and digging up the runway leaving them in a very vulnerable position. Smoky did this is minutes and became a hero that day.
When Corporal Wynne was hospitalized for jungle fever his pals brought Smoky the hospital and she was an instant hit with all the other patients in the hospital . The doctor in charge; Dr Mayo, allowed Smoky to sleep with the corporal and this began Smoky's working days. She served the remainder of the war and continued her work for a total of 12 years as a Therapy Dog.
Stress can manifest with the loss of a loved one, witnessing something tragic, being involved in something like war, or even when a person is dealing with a sickness or disease. The battle can be easier when they can think more positively or have an outlet for their stress. A gentle, friendly and patient friend can be good medicine. These dogs aren't after a big pay check or some fancy title on their business card... they just want to be a friend and show some love.

Celebrity Dogs that Made History

World War I - Rin Tin Tin
His name represents one of the first of his kind. From making movies and personal appearances, this strapping male is immortalized today with a Web Site, Fan Club and Museum in his name. Born in 1918 in France, Rin Tin Tin is still one of the most recognized German Shepherds in History. So talented and world renown that his bloodlines still continue today with Rin Tin Tin the 10th
Rinty; as he was nick named was discovered by Corporal Lee Duncan when his battalion was checking out a bombed out War Dog Kennel during World War I. The only survivors were a mother shepherd and 5 puppies. Corporal Duncan selected two pups, one male and one female and his battalion took the rest of the family back to their camp. Duncan named the pair after two French Puppets they had been give for lunch. The female was known as Nanette and the male was the original Rin Tin Tin.
Lee was fascinated with the Shepherds abilities and work to train the pair the way he had seen the German War Dogs perform. This was a relatively 'new' breed to the Americans. Upon returning from overseas, Duncan visited what was considered the best breeder of German Shepherds in the US when his ship arrived in New York. He wanted to learn more and train Rinty more. After his visit here he then departed for his home in Los Angeles - sadly without Nanette as she died in New York after becoming ill with distemper.
Rinty and Duncan would attend dog shows - with Rin Tin Tin's amazing abilities he quickly rose in celebrity status in the show circuit. Jumping walls over 11 feet high he quickly caught the attention of an aspiring film producer. This set the wheels in motion and Duncan was then off to approach every studio he could about putting Rinty in the movies. After a great deal of rejection he came across a movie being made by a studio in the industries 'poverty row' . They were attempting to film a scene with a wolf. Duncan was persistent enough with insisting his dog could do the scene in one take they finally allowed Rinty to step in. He was a hit, a 26 film career would follow . The 1922 Movie 'Man from Hell's River' also marked a turning point for the almost defunked Movie studio as well... you may have heard of them: Warner Brothers.
Duncan himself owned Rin Tin Tin 1 thru 4. The blood line did not end with Rintys death in 1932. Currently Rin Tin Tin the 10th like all the others, continues the legacy with personal appearance and projects. The official web site will even let you know when the next litter will be available.

BEAGLE BUSINESS
In 1950 a different kind of Dog Celebrity made his debut. He was a rather eccentric dog that could do wonderful imitations of people, snake, vulture, birds, a moose and even Mickey Mouse. He walks on two legs not four and can express many 'human-like' qualities but never speaks. He may not have jumped over tall buildings or saved a small child who had fallen in a well but this smart dog could fly a plane....okay he really just sat on top of his Dog House to pretend but still... have you seen any other dog do this? Snoopy hit the scene in Charles Shultz' Peanuts comic October 4, 1950 - just two days after the strip made its debut.
In his early appearance we aren't even sure 'who's' dog Snoopy is. He almost appears to belong to all the kids in the neighbourhood. Charlie Brown even accuses Snoopy of following him home and Patty came to the dogs defence by saying he just lived in the same direction. Over time Snoopy evolved into Charlie Browns Dog - or as Snoopy affectionately referred to him "that round headed kid" who brings him food.
Snoopy is a performer with a wild imagination. Expressing thought through 'thought bubbles' or the readers seeing his pages printed as he worked as an author snoopy would engage in a fantasy life with daydreams of his alter egos which included: Joe Cool, Flashbeagle, Vulture, Foreign Legionnaire and the World War I Flying Ace to name just a few. When Peanuts went to Film and TV, Snoopy remained silent except to express himself through sighs, moans, whimpers, growls, laughter and pantomime gestures.
His talents went beyond flying a dog house. He was a gifted Golf and Tennis player and played shortstop on the kids baseball team. His home run record topped that of Babe Ruth. An active member of the neighbourhood 'Beagle Scouts' and spends his free time reading Tolstoy's 'War and Peace' a the rate of one word a day.
In almost all weather Snoopy stayed outside his Dog House. We rarely saw him enter unless he was getting something or changing his clothes. I always wondered why he never went inside as a kid.... but there he lay on the peak on his back sleeping under the stars night after night. The comic played that Snoopy and Charlie Brown may never have been lucky in love - but the readers and viewers certainly loved Snoopy.

LASSIE THE SILVER SCREEN & TV STAR
Back in the early to mid 1900's Dogs were working animals on the farm. You'd never see pictures from the 1930's or 40's of a family pet sleeping in a cushioned fleece bed, wearing a sweatshirt - then putting on a winter coat and boots to head outside for a walk. Clearly the Dog has assumed a new role in our daily lives. Now our four legged companions are truly a family member and usually the ones calling the shots with their master if they are smart.
A smart dog is not new. In 1938 a man named Knight began to write short stories in the Saturday Evening Post about a dog named Lassie. Lassie transcended the division between the working dog and a family member. She was a loyal friend with what seemed like human qualities. She was the dog everyone wanted as a 'pet' and her relationship with her owners ; Jeff then later Timmy, could be considered the driving force in dogs being let 'into' the home in droves, becoming a part of the family.
The stories became so popular that Knight wrote a full length novel about Lassie in 1940 called: "Lassie Come Home." The book was so successful that in 1943 it was made into a full length feature and Lassie became a 'Movie Star'. The popularity of this movie was cause for a remake some 60+ years later.
Lassie's celebrity status was not limited to TV. She was also in a Radio series and several different TV series from 1954 until today have a character named Lassie that is modelled after the original. The stories still center on relationships, trust, and a dog that can perform small miracles. She is one of only three animals to have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame.
One interesting fact is that this pretty female dog... was really a Male! The male Collie's coat gets thicker and looks better on TV so males were used for filming the TV series and movies. There is currently a 10th generation of Lassie still working as the original Lassie did in TV and media. This prize winning pooch is still getting her owners out of trouble this is one of the longest running collective series in TV History. She (he) has been a legend and star to many generations now.

THE 70 YEAR OLD MYSTERY THAT IS STILL A MYSTERY!
The question has plagued us for years - it's almost as nerve wracking as 'how do they get the caramel in the Caramilk Squares? Why does Goofy have pants, walk upright and talk but Pluto is on all fours, barks like a dog and he's naked?
Pluto arrived on the scene first in 1930 as Mickey Mouse's dog. This pup has animated expressions however is unlike any other Disney animal in that he does not have the 'human' qualities the other do. This does not limit him, nor did it inhibit him in his launch to celebrity stardom. His career spanned over 78 years with more than 48 of his 'own' cartoons and numerous movie appearances and television shorts as well with Mickey and the 'gang'.
Goofy on the other hand was a dog introduced by Walt Disney in 1932 as 'Dippy Dog'. It was 4 years later that he was given the name Goofy. He was one of Mickey's friends with a unique laugh and some very annoying habits. Goofy claimed to be born in California. He said he was he first born 'Goof' in the United States. During his early appearances there was mention of a wife, and he was portrayed as a husband and family man. In the later cartoons however Goofy was identified as a 'widower'. What happened to Mrs. Goofy? No pictures on his mantle? No talk of her passing or a service of any kind? Not even his son Max makes mentioned of it? Gawrsh! That just doesn't seem right.
Both have had careers that have thrived with over 70 years in the business and countless movie and TV appearances. Despite their achievements I failed to find any mention of an Academy award for their Movie work or and Emmy for their TV appearances. It's a Dogs life!

MOOSE
Born Christmas Eve 1990, the youngest of his siblings, but the largest in size. His early years were marked with trouble, a behaviour problem emerged early in his life. Chewing up things, chasing cats.... his owners could not handle the deviant behaviour so they shipped him to a facility where they managed birds and animals. This was like boot camp and the training here would launch this young pup into a lengthy year Television career.
Moose was his real name. A Jack Russell terrier that had facial expressions and behaviour that would make you think he understood English perfectly and was smarter than the humans at times. His more familiar stage name Eddie, who appeared as Martin Crane's companion for 10 years on the hit series Frasier. Moose was apparently a quick study and was able to land the role after only 6 months of training. His solid, unbroken stare he would direct at Frasier was one sight repeated throughout the series that was a favourite of the viewers. The character of Eddie was a comical and intelligent little pup that seemed capable of outsmarting the genius of Frasier. For that, we loved him!
Moose is one of the few animal celebrities that had his own Calendar. His credits include commercials as well as a feature film "My Dog Skip" where he appeared with his son, Enzo.
Enzo was part of a litter bred especially to substitute in to the role of Eddie when it became clear that the Sitcom Frazier would enjoy a long run on TV. Enzo worked originally as a stunt double for his dad. When Moose went into retirement Enzo would assume the role full time. Like his father before him, Enzo was gifted at learning new tricks and talents. His intelligence and abilities impressed his human co-stars and he has enjoyed a healthy career just like his dad in the celebrity spotlight.

SANTA'S LITTLE HELPER
It was Christmas 1990, and this little Greyhound had lost his last race. Frustrated and unhappy his owner abandoned him at the track. This little guy's luck was about to change however. Homer and Bart had headed off the track with Homer's meagre Christmas bonus hoping to enhance the sum with a lead he got to bet on 'Santa's Little Helper'. This homeless dog I mentioned was the one Homer bet on - and lost.
Seems like a sad tale doesn't it? It's a Christmas story, there HAS to be a happy ending! Even though Santa's Little Helpers name was to serve as an 'omen' for Homer to bet on him, it wasn't winning the race that was the happy ending. Homer and Bart felt so sorry for this homeless little guy they took him home with them. The family was so happy; it ended up being a Happy Christmas for them all.
Santa's Little Helper remained a member of the family appearing in many episodes throughout the years. He was untrained and slightly unruly with tearing up furniture, digging holes in the backyard, eating food off the dining room table so Homer and Marge decide he needs some formal training. To get out of the 'dog house', Santa's Little Helper needs to graduate from obedience school. Professional dog trainers saved his fate in this episode.
This loving greyhound endured two broken legs; being giving away by Bart for a more 'talented' dog named Laddie at one point as also came close to death with a twisted stomach in season three.
Santa's Little Helper not only enjoys begging and stealing food, long walks and burying things in the back yard but he also manage to find time to sire some 30 or more puppies with three different female dogs as well. We heard it for years when we watched the famous game show 'The Price is Right' but remember folks to spay or neuter your pets!

Dog Training Tips & Resources

PUPPY = PATIENCE
It's no secret that in this day and age our lives are hectic and busy but too busy to take time for our family pet? The one that is happy to see us each time we walk through the door? How can that be? If you have taken on the responsibility of pet ownership then you have to realize that you do have responsibilities to your pet.
Like children, they need boundaries and guidance. They need to be told no and they need praise when they carry out a desired behaviour. Destructive dogs could easily be animals that suffer from separation anxiety. This is not about getting revenge it's about them being very sociable animals and being left alone or ignored causes them and great deal of stress.
The boundaries and guidance are not that complicated and can make the owners life much easier in the long run. I may not be an expert but after reading countless articles and books it all boils down to common sense. I have used these simple guidelines with my own dog and it was quite successful.
To train your dog to do his or her business outside takes some time. Staying one step ahead of accidents will save you some grief and aggravation. They will need to go out first thing in the morning, after meals ( usually about an hour after but that will vary from dog to dog), after naps , after being left alone for periods of time and just before going to bed. Simple isn't it? Designate and area outside for their business and encourage them to go there, praise them when they do as well. Not necessarily with a treat, but it seems that they learn the words good dog very quickly and like to hear it.
The other word they learn quickly is NO. A loud NO should be all you need to express that the behaviour was not desirable. You should never have to resort to harsh punishment ever as this does not help the process to train them into good habits at all. To continue to punish, yell, hit or scold after the behaviour has stopped will confuse the pet. They will grow to be afraid of you!
Give them some barriers. Crate training can be a good idea however throwing them in a crate for long periods of time right out of the starting gate would be a mistake. They need to grow used to the crate, not as a place for punishment but a safe place. Leave it open to them, put in a blanket or towel with their scent on it. Maybe give them some food or treats in there to make it inviting and not something they are afraid of.
Outside we have an area for her business but then during nice weather when we are outside or our windows are open we have a dog house for her to enjoy the breeze, keep shaded and have her safe haven outside as well. Inside if we are home we have her bed or a blanket. The blanket is HER place. When we travel to friends at all we can take the blanket, put it down and she knows that's her place as well. They like to be around people, they like to behave in a way that makes their owners happy and their needs are relatively simple. A little bit of patience, a lot of love and some guidance and your dog will be a wonderful friend and loving companion. I wish I could offer the same simple advice on some simple ways to raise teenagers, but there is nothing simple about that!
