Cute Bento Decorating with Nori

Ranked #4,425 in Food & Cooking, #84,126 overall

Make your lunch kawaii

Sheets of dried seaweed, called Nori, are a staple in the art of kawaii bento making. Nori is usually green-black in appearance and is most commonly found wrapped around sushi.

Cute bento boxes often contain foods decorated with nori. Here are some tips for cutting out shapes and patterns in nori:

1. Use tools (x-acto knives, scissors) that are dedicated to food. Thoroughly clean and dry your tools after each use.

2. Keep your nori dry. Nori becomes soft and difficult to work with when wet, not unlike regular paper.

3. Use a pattern. For more intricate designs, draw it on tracing or wax paper first, place it over your nori, then cut out the design.

4. Go slow. Nori is brittle and breaks easily. Start with simple designs and patterns so you can get a feel for the unique qualities of nori as you practice.

Of course, there are tools that you can purchase which makes nori cutting easier. Face shaped nori punches are very useful and very cute.

The most common tool for using nori in bento luches is the nori punch. They are similar to the paper punches you find in the scrapbooking section of the craft store. The difference is that the designs on nori punches are better suited for bento making. Cutting out small details, like eyes and smiles, can be difficult. That's why I find my face-shaped punch invaluable.
