Make Your Cat A Halloween Costume

Do you want your cat to look spooky this Halloween? Here's a super easy way to make your cat a great Halloween costume.

What you need for the cloak:

A fairly short black skirt. If you don't want the cloak to be black, you can use another for a different look. Make the cloak your own!
Black ribbon- 1/4'' thick. Once again, you can use another color if desired (I think that red would give a nice "vampire" effect).

Optional (for a raised collar):
Poster board (You can use any color, but for maximum blending, use the color of the skirt)

Putting together the cloak:

Finally, you'll be putting together your cloak. Measure off a collars length at the top of the skirt (2-3 inches should be good), where you will put your ribbon. If you don't plan on using the skirt for anything else, you may sew the ribbon in place. Cut the ribbon as long as you will need it to be in order to tie the cloak onto your cat. Two feet is usually enough. You might want to put two ribbons for extra strength. Lay the skirt onto your cat, and tie the ribbon in place on its chest.

If you decided not to use a raised collar, then smooth the collar back. If you do want to make the raised collar, then this is where the poster board comes in handy. Cut a piece of poster board 2-3 inches thick, and approximately 1 foot long.
Put it behind your cat's neck, and fold the edges of the skirt over the board to disguise it. You're done making your super easy Dracula cloak!

This is the perfect addition to any cat Halloween costume. It can stand alone as well!

What you need for the witch hat:

Poster Board (any color that you want for the hat)
Paper (Get the color you want for the hat if you don't want to color it)
Tape
Elastic (you can get whatever width you'd like, but the thicker the elastic, the more comfort for your cat)

Putting together the hat:

If your paper is white, and not the desired color, you need to color it. Color it with crayons, markers, shoe polish, or whatever you have around. Take your paper and roll it into a cone. Usually there will be a dangling part of the paper that you will have to cut off, so that the paper will be even. Tape your cone in place. Cut out a circle of poster board for the brim. Make sure that the circle is larger than the bottom of the hat. Cut out a hole in the middle of the circle that is the size of the base of the cone of paper. Slip the brim over the hat. Turn up the edges of the hat underneath the brim, and tape.
Measure the elastic so that it will fit snugly on your cat's chin, and cut just a little larger than needed. You can always adjust this later. Use duct tape and tape the elastic inside of the hat.

Your cat's witch hat is completed, and ready to wear!

Is your cat a little angel? Then why not dress her/him up as one this Halloween? This costume is quick and easy to make. You can also vary the costume so that the cat is an evil angel. Look below for an image tutorial.

What you need:

Three pipe cleaners. Get white or yellow pipe cleaners if your cat is a good angel, black or red if it's evil.

Two pieces of copy paper.

Scissors.

Ribbon or elastic. It needs to be long enough to fit around your cat's chest.
Optional:

White/black feathers to glue onto the wings.

Putting it together:
Twist two of the pipe cleaners into a ring. Make sure that one is big enough to comfortably fit around the cat's neck. Two fingers should be able to fit easily in between the "collar" and cat's neck. If your cat already wears a collar, you can use that instead of a pipe cleaner. Next attach a pipe cleaner onto the collar ring by wrapping the end around it several times. Attach the opposite end to the other ring, which is the halo. You can cut the pipe cleaner to adjust the height of the halo. Slip the "collar" around the cat's neck. Your halo is done! Don't leave your cat alone with it's halo on. He/she may play with the halo and accidentally tighten the collar around their neck.

Now it's time to make the wings! Draw a wing shape onto a piece of white copy paper. (Black if you are making an evil angel). Cut it out, and make a duplicate of it facing the other direction. Be sure to leave enough room at the bottom so that you can fold the paper around your ribbon. Tie a piece of ribbon or elastic so that it fits snugly, and comfortably, around your cat's chest. Fold the end of your paper so that a flap wraps around the ribbon. Glue in place. If you want your wings to look really realistic, you can glue some white/black feathers to the paper. Your cat's angel costume is done!

Make sure that you keep your cat safe this Halloween. Don't leave your cat in the costume unattended, and make sure you take it off right after you admire Kitty and take some pictures.

Since Halloween is a time of pranks (and worse!), sometimes involving cats, you shouldn't leave your cat out on Halloween night. This is especially important if you have an all black or all white cat. Some shelters refuse to adopt out black cats near Halloween for fear that they will be used temporarily as a "decoration", then abandoned, or worse. There are many stories of cats being sacrificed in rituals around Halloween, so it's a very dangerous time for pets.
