Drawing Cute Ice Cream

Food with a face might seem strange, but it's actually really cute. It started in Japan, and now it's a worldwide phenomenon! All kinds of people make designs, polymer clay charms, buttons, and other creations of cute or "kawaii" food with faces. Use this step-by-step guide to get started drawing cute food like this cute ice cream cone.

Once you learn how to draw cute food, you can make adorable graphic designs for tees, buttons, mugs, and other products offered by sites like Cafepress and Zazzle.

The Ice Cream Cone

Start with the ice cream cone. Let's make a waffle cone! It's obviously cone-shaped, but with a little curve in the middle to show where it's wrapped.

Building it Up

Let's start to fill it with ice cream. Start with a circle: This is our guideline, it will be erased later.

More Construction

Draw half-circles around where the circle meets the cone.

Tip for the Future

Using basic shapes helps things look cuter. Use rounded corners when making cute graphic designs to make them more appealing.

Ice Cream!

Use your lines to draw the icecream: Mine's strawberry!

Cleanup

Erase the guidelines and the part of the cone behind the icecream.

The Fill

Now colour everything in. Just choose a colour a couple shades lighter than the colour of the lines.

Shading it in

Add some shading. Choose a shade between the one you coloured everything in with and the lines. To add depth, you only need to add a little shading here and there: pretend that the light source is directly in front of the object and add the dark shades accordingly.

Make it Your Own!

Instead of pink for strawberry, try different colours to make yours extra unique! Pink, white, and brown make a neapolitan.

It's the Little Things

Let's add sprinkles, and some texture for the cone! Draw short little lines for sprinkles in different colours. To make the waffle-cone look extra waffley, draw a couple hatchmarks to indicate the pattern.

Let's Face it

Add a little face: Two dots and a smile. This is an optional step, but I think it makes it cuter. A couple dots of white will make the eyes shine.

Freeze!

You're done, awesome! Now try out your own variations!
